That's part of the 'engagement based matchmaking' they've had for like half a decade If you have a string of games where you play bad, it'll drop you down a couple 'skill tiers' and match you with easier opponents to keep you playing If you suddenly started playing like a league pro for a few games, you'll get put in tougher lobbies with higher skill players This was put in place to protect lower skill players (i.e. Timmy No Thumbs) to make sure they keep playing and spend money on cosmetics Because their metrics found low skill players would drop the game too quick in the past and those were potential spenders they were losing out on --- "It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose.
