I mentioned this to UF8 and @DEM1995 but I was asking for an additional bonus matched themed around BOST 2022 vs BOST 6 but I have yet to hear anything from Dawn regarding this idea (UF8 said it was fine but that Dawn or even I would have to handle it). I will be busy today so I can't post yet.

Late but congrats to Nostalgia Op. 3 for winning the snubs contest! GG to Neon White for putting up a good fight and also making it super far!

Thanks for the ping, but I don't really have faith. As someone who doesn't have much music theory training - I couldn't tell you what key a song is in at the drop of a hate - and as someone who was WAY too abrasive to those who did know music theory shitting on my favorites and lauding things that I thought sounded like absolute ass because they were "interesting," I don't feel I'll ever be welcome again. More than half of it is my own fault, but the point remains regardless.

Pretty sure most people here don't have serious music theory training. I've seen people do well in these contests who I'm pretty sure didn't even know what a music mode or time signature is. Those people who said that are probably in the minority, but I'm sorry if they may have hurt your feelings. That sucks.

On the other hand, you'll be surprised just how many normie songs have done well. What I listed wasn't comprehensive, and it's already an incredible amount of very recognizable very recent retirees (or near-retirees).

Keep in mind that Staff Roll from Mario 64 lost r1 last year only to retire this year. Don't give up hope too soon!

Of course, if you choose not to participate, I understand as well. People hating on your picks can get very tiring very quickly.

Glad to see Shadowlord getting some serious respect! It's one of my favorites as well, and damn is it a sorrowful one. I love the choir and the buildup as well. The harmonization gives me chills. Nier is such a tragic protagonist, and this is definitely top 10 for me as well. Possibly my favorite NieR song across both games but not entirely sure.

@trdl23 Normie stuff in vgmc is really making a comeback! We had Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario 64, FF6 (yes, Dancing Mad), FF13, two Chrono Trigger songs (plus Chrono Trigger just won BOST 6), Kirby, Layton, and two Sonic songs retire within the past two years. Plus a Mario Galaxy song almost retired recently.
You should try VGMC again. You probably have a way better chance now.

+2 Can You Feel the Sunshine?

match 1: They're pretty close (both around the mid to high 7s range). Almost tempted to vote Back in Time but I also don't want to vote against the oddly nostalgic forest song that reminds me of my band class days.

match 2: I mean they're both my songs. One I nominated last year then supported this year and the other I nominated for Bost 6 then nominated for this year. They also happen to be my two favorite retirees from vgmc 17. Easy abstain here. Not gonna choose between the two.

match 3: The only match where I have a clear preference. I said it once and I'll say it again, Sunshine is better in basically every way compared to Back in Time even if they're both good. City is also good but honestly not as good as the other two. 100% team sunshine today.

This would also place 16th out of 17 on my champion ranking. My 17th (EXSPHERE) is at least super interesting/daring though, which this is not.

I'm sorry this was both of your guys' experience. I def had some pretty rough moments in the contest myself (and in prior contests) to the point where I ranted on and on about them, so I think I get how you feel.

Hopefully vgmc 18 goes better for you, lefty. And for you, DireKrow, I hope that if you do ever return, you'll find the vgmc you return to to be much more rewarding. Fwiw, Luma Pools was one of my favorite discoveries in the contest! It will always go down as more remembered and loved across the gaming community than probably most vgmc retirees anyways. :)

8 . Sonic R - Can You Feel The Sunshine -- Yeah, I would've preferred this as the winner over the other Sonic song. Better instrumentation, better melody. Better pretty much everything. Both are great though. (fire)

7. Simcity 4 -- Epicentre -- Okay Suna Gina was better but this is still a banger. Love the percussion here especially. For some reason, the singing at 1:06 reminds me of Enya (complimentary). (steel/ground)

6. Kirby and the Forgotten Land - Northeast Frost Street -- I feel like there are better/more impressively composed songs from this ost (ex. Blizzard Bridge) but this is still fantastic. It's just filled with this feeling of a simple fun adventure in the frosted streets. A very endearing song. (ice)

5. Professor Layton and the Last Specter - Theme of the Devil's Flute -- Possibly one of my favorite discoveries from any contest. This along with some discussions I've had with fans of this song and series has re-ignited my interest in playing the series after I got bored of playing the Curious Village like...10 years ago (oops). The guitar solo at 3:01 is *amazing* btw. Great buildup. Awesome piece of music. (ghost)

4. Breath of Fire V - Electric Power Building (PowerOne) -- Classic example of an acquired taste at least for me. I still remember when I ranked this near last place (35th of 38th) when we had it in a Supra contest a couple years ago. Fast forward two years, and I literally supported the song myself. I love the electric sound effects. And my gosh this song has some of the coolest build ups (chord progressions?) I've ever heard starting at 2:20 mark (not to mention the harmony in this section is pure ear candy). (electric)

3. Final Fantasy VI - Dancing Mad -- and the award for my favorite song that I didn't nom/support goes tooooooo-- the Kefka theme lol
This is such an impressive composition especially considering the hardware at the time. FOUR movements?! Insane.

The first movement is such a nice starter. It's extremely intimidating (really lets you know THIS is the final boss) and just EPIC. And those runs at the 1:33 mark?! Damn this goes HARD.
That organ does wonders for this song.

The second movement is where we first hear some semblance of the final boss himself being incorporated into the music...a foreshadowing for the final movement? Perhaps. My least favorite of the four but still impressive no less. It's like...Kefka is maniacally laughing at you! Definitely quite fitting.

The third movement...oh man. Once again, banger organ. This literally sounds like Bach somehow, specifically Toccata and Fugue (aka the vampire theme song), which I guess makes sense considering vampires are usually evil and intimidating just like Kefka.

The fourth movement is definitely the fan favorite and for a good reason. I'll admit when I was first introduced to this song a while back, I didn't care for this movement, but it has grown on me. It really represents Kekfa's insanity very well, that's for sure. Great finisher.

As one commenter on one of the Dancing Mad videos put it, using the SNES soundfont is like painting with crayons. Pretty hard to do and hard to make it sound nice. With this song, Uematsu used those crayons and painted the Sistine Chapel. (dark/flying)

1. Super Mario 64 -- Staff Roll (normal) & Chrono Trigger -- To Far Away Times (psychic) -- Choosing between these two is like trying to decide who is your favorite child. It's impossible. Both are two of the greatest credits themes in gaming history. They both have beautiful melodies and great instrumentation. They both perfectly convey the bittersweet feeling one would have at the end of an adventure. They are both songs I feel you don't even have to play the games to feel nostalgic for because they capture that feeling so perfectly. Seeing Staff Roll here makes me especially happy after its tragic r1 loss last year. What a fantastic comeback. Both are masterpieces. Oh, and if they were people, TFAT would be time travel buddies with Back in Time. Definitely.

Now that VGMC 17 is over, I have finalized my rankings of the 16 retirees.

16. beatmania IIDX 20 tricoro/jubeat saucer | Rainbow after snow -- I like the beat but I feel like overall this just isn't really my thing. Didn't care for it originally, don't care for it now. More power to you if you like it though!

15. Deemo II -- Un Deux Trois -- I do apologize for being too hard on this song and ranting about it winning. That being said, I just can't quite get used to the vocals. I *want* to really enjoy this song but it's hard to. I'm glad it's a major key song that actually made it super far though! (psychic/water)

14. Final Fantasy XIII - Music: The Sunleth Waterscape + Lyrics - Not a fan of the singing or the melody, but I really like the instrumentation here. (fire/water)

13. The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince | Moonlight Concert -- I did not like this song much originally but it has grown on me quite a bit. Still not a big fan of the vocals, but I love the waltz-y feel to it and the instrumentation. And omg that flute :heart: (I'm a flutist so I approve) (dark/fairy)

12. (Piano Version) -- I really like the clapping in the background. Usually I like bagpipes, but this doesn't quite cut it for me. The melody itself is great though. (flying)

11. Destiny Child | Ragna Breakers -- Marioooo Kart 8!!! This is pretty cool. It kept beating songs I liked better than it (Lost Forest, Crystal Caves) but it still is on my favorite discovery list so I can't complain that much. (normal/fighting)

10. Cleopatra Fortune | SHININ' QUEEN -- The voice at the beginning is a bit off-putting but basically everything else about this song slaps pretty hard. (fairy/ground)

9. Sonic R | Back in Time -- While I am satisfied with this as the winner, I do feel the other Sonic R retiree was better; its melody was more catchy. This is still pretty cool. Head cannon is that this song would be a time traveler if it were a person! (psychic)

The Last Specter's Theme

This contest could've gone better but it also could've gone much worse in my opinion. I think this is a good finals but I understand how other people may feel otherwise. I wish we could have a finals we all agreed on so we could all be happy but I guess that's not possible.

Back in Time is a 7/10 for me while Un Deux Trois is a 6/10. They're both alright tracks, but this really doesn't feel like a semi-final tier match to me.

TFAT > PowerOne, Counting Song > Dialga, Ekko > My Village, Two Birds > FUTURE. So a 3-2 win for chronological but with some close matches in there, including the headliner. I wish for both these songs to give their best and for the winner to put the Last Specter in its grave.

ekahi 'elua 'ekolu isn't as annoying as I remember it. I actually kinda like it today, and I will say that even if this isn't my preferred song, I'm glad to see a major key song make it this far. But my vote is still clear. I still like the sonic song more. Sorry, yksi kaksi kolme!

Last Spookster's Song

Ragnarok sounding unusually Mario Kart 8-esque to me today (which makes sense because it's probably fusion like MK music). As good as Ragna is, Layton is my favorite remaining song in the contest by quite a wide margin so my vote here is pretty easy.

Okay yeah I was in a really crappy mood that last time. It sounds better today. Vocals still annoying af but for some reason I didn't notice until now that 123 is like entirely in the major key which is definitely a bonus. We NEED more major key representation so I'm glad about that at least. TFAT is also mostly major key but I think it switches to minor towards the end oof

still voting tfat, but I can appreciate 123 being one of the few major key songs that gets tons of respect. If 123 is actually minor and I'm mistaken, don't tell me. Don't ruin it for me. Let me be happy in my belief that it is entirely major key.

The two best songs are in r1 but I still have a very clear preference between the two. Dialga good but at the end of the day, TFAT is way better in my eyes. NFS is great and one of the better FL songs for sure, but I'm surprised to see it made it this far. The last two songs are good except one has annoying vocals and the other doesn't so it's a pretty easy vote there.

Match 1: Rampage good but not better than Temporal Tower smh. Also I don't even know how it's possible that I like K'Sante. It's got both dubstep AND harsh vocals yet I don't mind both of them all that much. I like this song. How?!?!?! Anyways, pretty close match so I feel like abstaining lol

Match 2: The Vocaloid song isn't that bad but Staff Roll is a masterpiece so it's an easy vote here. Nice to see my vgmc 16 nomination actually doing well this year after what happened last year.

Match 3: Oh hey more annoying vocals....I was expecting this to be mostly in French which probably would've been more enjoyable. The instrumentation is good at least.
