In 1979, the 3 point shot was instituted in the NBA. Giannis just broke the record for the most points scored in a game since then without making a single 3 pointer. Of course, Wilt still holds the all time record in that category.

Trying to get excited for the pool play finale tomorrow but not that into it really.

Cool factoid for the Bucks is that if they win tomorrow, they'll win their group, but if they lose tomorrow, they can still win their group, or win a wild card, or be eliminated altogether, depending on what other teams do.

Yes, the thought is that it's going to take just 1 kill to eliminate characters from beginning to end, so that won't be an issue.

To extend an olive branch to those who would like a little more action, I'm thinking of, for at least the first couple rounds, increasing the amount of kills users can make per round to 2 kills. So just to clarify, it would still just take one kill to eliminate a character, but people would get to make 2 kills per round for at least the first couple rounds. It would help whittle down the list a bit quicker.

So, I think we're pretty much set to go? I'm anticipating the first round will start on Saturday evening or Sunday afternoon. 24 hour rounds. Each user can make 2 kills per round (will go down to 1 at some point), it takes just 1 kill to eliminate each character. Last character standing wins.

Kill by calendar day (or by round) would work, and I think could solve some of the concerns people have. Similar to the bracket contest that was just completed, each round would last 24 hours from the topic posting. Everyone would get a chance to make 1 kill in that period of time. They could do it near the beginning or end of the round, it doesn't matter. Then the next round is posted, and everyone would get a kill again to use in that round. Rounds continue until there's no one left, except the winner.

What do people think about that? Honestly, with that kind of structure, a bot wouldn't necessarily even be needed since tallying would be very simple without having to worry about timestamps.

I get the concern of it being a slog to just kill one a day, but the contest would literally only last about a week under that format. Not long at all. And it would allow for maximum kill equity, giving everyone a chance to compete.

So just to check in on this. Several ideas have been thrown around, and while it's impossible for what's ultimately decided to be everyone's first choice, that's why we're having this discussion.

While I still favor the 1 round, 1 kill, 1 per 24 hour idea, there are a couple people who aren't fans of the 1 kill per 24 hour rule. So let's look at the alternatives.

The more I think about it, the more a gradual increase seems unappealing. There would just be too much incentive in killing strong characters early when they only require 1 kill, rather than waiting until it takes more kills. Nobody would bother killing fodder in the beginning because of this. It's just too imbalanced of a concept. If anyone disagrees, feel free to chime in.

I think mnk's idea of 3 kills per character from beginning to end is a plausible solution to consider for those who want more frequent voting intervals. For one thing, it would be nice if your favorite couldn't be killed instantly, but rather it would take 3 kills from 3 different users to fully eliminate a character. Having roughly 750 kills needed would extend the contest to at least a couple days. The voting would likely be 1 kill per hour, though I would argue 1 kill every 2 hours could help extend it even further. A bot or someone else would need to run such a venture though. Updates may have to be shown on an external link of some kind for at least the first half of the contest.

So what are people more in favor of at the moment?

Scenario A: 1 continuous round, 1 kill to eliminate, 1 kill per 24 hours
Scenario B: 1 continuous round, 3 kills to eliminate, 1 kill per 1 or 2 hours
Scenario C: Some other option

Some of this also depends on GMUNs ability to set up a bot for this. I would volunteer to run Scenario A manually if a bot cannot be created. Otherwise, a bot or other volunteers would have to step in to run alternate scenarios.

I think that would be the best part! With 248 characters, that's a pretty wide range for 'mid' characters to slip into the late-game. Popular characters who have haters, like Lightning, will die immediately. Legit hated characters like Palom will also die immediately. Then even popular characters without haters, like Vivi, will get picked off simply because they're popular... and that's where the fun begins! What crazy, forgettable nonsense is going to reach the end? I'm excited to find out.

I think one kill per day, plus one long round, would be the most interesting. It would allow a decent amount of strategizing, even early on. Do I waste my daily kill on a character a lot of people hate, or do I prioritize someone only I hate and hope the other character gets taken out by someone else? If the round went too fast, it'd be over too quickly for any of that. And, if there were multiple rounds, it would also start blurring together a bit. I don't want to have to kill Jecht fifty times.

Very well said (except for the part about Jecht, he's amazing). The fun of a Kill My is having no idea which mid character is going to somehow come out on top. The 1-round, winner-takes-all aspect of it also adds to the intrigue. And as Roba mentioned, by adding a 24-hour buffer between votes, it will actually give time for strategy, discussion, and just the chance to enjoy the contest for the week or so that it'll last.

Personally, I would vote against upping the kill count at certain thresholds. I don't know. I just like the purity of the classic Kill My where every vote someone casts kills a character. It would also make the 24 hour rule a little too long and tedious. I think if we were to go the route of upping the kill count at certain stages, we would likely have to have it as 1 vote per hour, and separate it into different rounds that end when a certain kill cap is reached. Or just bite the bullet and have one continuous round that ends in a day or two.

the argument against having it all done in a single day is that, even if the date is announced ahead of time, there is undoubtedly going to be some people unavailable that day to play. So then they just miss out on the whole thing.

I know something like one kill a day is a bit tedious, but it would allow for everyone to participate and even allow for things to marinate a bit as far as strategy and such.

Though, having it split up into daily rounds that end once a kill cap is reached is an option, and could work well with a increasing kill count option. I think the problem of people missing out on rounds would still come into play. To mitigate that, if that is the path we choose, I would suggest maybe a consistent daily start time, which wouldn't be too hard to set up if a bot was running it I imagine.

@Grimlyn

What do you think about the single round option? All 248 characters, one round. Do you think it would be easy to set up a bot to run that? I imagine it might be a little easier setup than a multi-round variation.

Edit: And I think limiting users to 1 kill per day could help make it go a little longer. If we make it one kill per hour, the contest would end in a day. 1 kill per day would extend the contest to about a week. Which is a nice length for an inbetween thanksgiving and Christmas contests.

There's a lot of different ways to run a Kill My. I guess my original thought was to take inspiration from the Kill My Pokemon contest that would happen at the end of every Save My Pokemon contest.

The rules there was that it was just a single round. All characters included. I think everyone was allowed to kill 1 character per hour, and since there were over 700 pokemon, that made sense.

The round just kept going until only one character remained. It's a shorter contest than doing multiple rounds, but I kinda think it embodies the Kill My spirit moreso that way.

The only tweak I made from the Kill My Pokemon contest was to change it from 1 kill per hour to 1 kill per day to elongate the contest a bit and since it is a smaller field than the kill my pokemon contest was.

If we wanted to stretch it out into a multi-round Kill My, we'd have to discuss how that would look exactly.

So speaking of continuing the 25th Anniversary festivities, I have an idea brewing on what to do next, and thought it could be fun to do a Kill My Favorite Final Fantasy Character contest. The rules would be simple. There would be a single round where every character to ever appear in an SMFFFC contest would be included (248, if my count is correct). Then people would vote for a character to kill, one at a time, which would eliminate them from the list. Last character standing wins. To elongate it a little bit (since it is essentially just one big round), each user would be able to make only one kill every 24 hours, which would mean it would take about a week to complete, assuming participation is roughly the same as this contest was. If thats something people would be interested in, let me know, and I might try to put something together, with an estimated starting date being sometime after Thanksgiving.

I definitely think it gave a snapshot of some non-champions that could potentially make or even win a final with enough support. People like Barret and Rikku and so forth. Yuna, I think, was maybe the biggest surprise because she doesn't really have anyone maining her in SMFFFC right now, and really hasn't in a while, yet she did very well in this tournament. She might be someone who could make a deeper run if she just picked up a couple backers.

(13) Cloud Strife (FFVII) --VS-- (11) Kefka Palazzo (FFVI) - 19-23
There will be no storybook ending today, as the villain has prevailed. Kefka is our SMFFFC 25th Anniversary Tournament champion, defeating Cloud in a matchup where he trailed early, but finished on a 14-3 run to claim the victory. Kefka was definitely the under-the-radar character of the contest, silently making his way through the tournament while powerhouses like Auron and Cloud, and underdogs like Barret and Rikku, got all the attention. But he was always there, plotting and scheming, tricking and conniving.

So how did Kefka slither his way through the bracket? Well, after cruising through the first few rounds, he used an enchantment spell on Yuffie and Vanille to seduce them into doing his dirty work, eliminating his most imminent threats in (6) Zidane and (3) Squall. Once the ladies did their job, Kefka swiftly eliminated them like the backstabbing scoundrel he is. His most shocking victory followed when he sent Auron back to the Farplane. How he won that match, I still do not know, but it undoubtedly involved some sort of treacherous trickery. When the dust settled, all that was left in his way was our spiky-haired protagonist. The face of the franchise. Cloud Strife..Kefka wasnt impressed, and cast Heartless Angel on Cloud to bring him to his knees and claim the victory.

Kefkas win shouldnt be too big of a surprise. He is coming off a recent stretch of 4 straight top 10 finishes, culminating in a championship in contest XXIII. While he has dealt with the all-too-common dip in stats since the win, its clear that he still has a very dedicated fanbase amongst Board 8s ranks.

Well, thats a wrap! Thanks everyone for participating. I know how sacred SMFFFC is around here, so I tried to do this contest right by those standards. I had a lot of fun hosting it, and I hope you all enjoyed participating in it.

This also doesnt have to be the end of the 25th Anniversary celebrations. I most certainly am not trying to claim a monopoly on it and encourage everyone to keep the party going if theyd like.

In SMFFFC XV, Rydia defeated Cloud. In the very next contest, Tidus defeated Kefka by a razor thin margin. Both characters were eventually able to get their revenge. First it was Cloud, who in contest XIX was able to redeem himself with a victory over Laguna. Then Kefka got his turn in contest XXIII, where he defeated Aerith to claim a championship of his own.

Now these two battle-hardened champions face off, in this 25th anniversary tournament, to see who is our favorite Final Fantasy character, bracket style. Is the trophy meaningless? Perhaps. But when have these two ever backed away from a challenge? Bragging rights are on the line. In a battle between protagonist and villain, only one can come out on top. Let the voting begin.

Day 36 Results:

(11) Kefka Palazzo (FFVI) --VS-- (10) Auron (FFX) - 24-21
Auron steamrolled his way through the competition, but in a somewhat surprising upset, is defeated by Kefka in what was a neck-and-neck battle from beginning to end. While Auron was supposed to be an untalkative type, his role as a mentor and guide resulted in the second-greatest number of lines of dialogue after Tidus. As his mouth is covered, Auron's voice doesn't need to match mouth movements, giving him slightly more freedom in his delivery compared to most characters.

Oh dear.

I went back to check to make sure votals were accurate just in case and discovered I did not vote in a match Barret lost by a single vote. I could've sworn I did nearly as soon as I saw the topic so I have no idea what happened.

If it makes you feel any better, I made a similar blunder earlier in this contest that I wasn't going to say anything about, but what the hell, why not.

In the Yuffie/Zidane match, I accidentally voted for Yuffie, when I fully intended to vote for Zidane. I don't know what happened, and didn't even notice it until hours later. Like it was just a complete mental brain fart where I selected the wrong name by accident. Yuffie ended up winning 20-18, so it would've been tied, all else being equal, had I not made that blunder. Whoops. Sorry Zidane!

The worse part about all this is I made a similar mistake when I hosted the Disney music contest. I accidentally saved Be Prepared over Belle when I intended to save Belle, and of couse, the match was decided by a single vote (Belle lost).

As the host, I should be better with this, and the fact that the mistake actually mattered the only two times I ever did it is bizarre.

As we wait for today's round to finish up, I'll throw around a couple other odd factoids about Clouds run:

At the end of Round 3, only three unseeded characters remained in the entire competition: Rikku, Yuna, and Barret. Cloud ended up defeating all of them, in order.

He's only faced one seeded character all tournament. That was (20) Lulu in Round 3.

He's not the only one letting others do the heavy lifting though. If Kefka wins the semifinal, the highest seed he will have beaten is 10th seeded Auron, meaning that neither finalist will have even had to face the top 9 seeds.

So whose been killing all these top seeds? Well, Barret for starters. He has three top 9 kills himself.

No matter what happens. Whether (13) Cloud, (11) Kefka, or (10) Auron wins, the eventual champion will have just one "upset" victory as far as seeding is concerned. Auron's is his victory over (2) Cecil. Kekfa's would be his victory over Auron, if successful. And Cloud's would be his victory over Kefka/Auron, if successful.

If someone were to ask you, objectively, to provide one character as the face of the Final Fantasy franchise as a whole, Cloud would definitely be on the short list, if not the leading choice. And while that may have been more of a given 10-20 years ago, I think it's still true today.

Cloud is the prototypical character that is capable of making a run like this. He just often doesn't because it's viewed as a typical/expected outcome, maybe even boring. But he's been able to knockout several impressive characters on this run. Definitely didn't take the easy road. However, he was also spared from some matchups that may have ended his run. Had Rikku not beaten Aerith, and Yuna not beaten Tifa, Cloud would have had to defeat Aerith, Tifa, and Barret to get to where he's at. Would he have been able to accomplish that?

It would have been interesting for someone like Barret or Yuna to win it all. Similar to the new NBA in-season tournament this year, it would have been a nice, pointless trophy to hand out. But since this tournament is basically just an unofficial exhibition, it's probably best in the end that a former champion wins it all. All that's left to be decided is, who will that be?

Day 35 Results:

Barret Wallace (FFVII) --VS-- (13) Cloud Strife (FFVII) - 18-19
RacistFAQs! Or maybe its Final Fantasy thats racist? Theres over 100 playable characters in the mainline Final Fantasy games, but only 3 are black: Barret, Sazh (FFXIII), and Kiros (a FFVIII side character with a minor role).

Barret, who has been an incredible closer this contest, finally gets a taste of his own medicine as Cloud gets the final 3 votes to ensure his spot in the finals, ending Barrets Cinderella run in the process.

For those following the submitted predictions, MZero is set to win it, unless Auron were to win the whole thing, then Genesis_Saga would win it.
