well the part about saving money is true, and people will still be getting half of whatever they used to get to buy other stuff. Grocery stores mark shit up by like 200-300%, the government will be able to wholesale it for much less.

nah fuck that im fine with the government supplying the cash and people making choices on their own

Most Americans choose to be obese. That's a winning attitude you have there guy.

And yet other countries have healthier, fitter people while still having good benefits.

As things are, the government is paying for people to eat name brand snacks. There is often no limit on what you can buy with the snap card, so long as its from a legit store. Youve got taxpayers buying store brand while welfare recipients are buying namebrand. That doesnt add up, so we need change.

I've seen it in action. THIS.

How about, I dunno, educating the public on making healthy food choices?

Critics of the proposal said distributing that much food presents a logistical nightmare. "Among the problems, it's going to be costly and take money out of the [SNAP] program from the administrative side. It's going to stigmatize people when they have to go to certain places to pick up benefits," says Jim Weill, president of the nonprofit Food Research and Action Center.

Stacy Dean, vice president for food assistance policy at the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, called the proposal "radical and risky." The idea that the government could save money by distributing food itself, she said, is "ill-informed at best."

It isn't clear whether the boxes will come with directions on how to cook the foods inside. "It could be something that [SNAP recipients] don't even know how to make," notes Miguelina Diaz, whose team at Hunger Free America works directly with families to help them access food aid. "We deal with different people of different backgrounds. Limiting them by providing them a staple box would limit the choices of food they can prepare for their families."

According to Dean, from CBPP, the Trump administration wants to trim an additional $80 billion from the SNAP program by cutting off about 4 million people who currently receive food assistance. Most of them live in states that have decided to loosen the program's eligibility requirements slightly. Under the administration's proposal, states would no longer be able to do so.

Yikes, I don't see this going well for people with specific diet needs or allergies...It's not a complete conversion of benefit funds to food, but still, it seems limiting.

The Trump administration is proposing a major shake-up in one of the country's most important "safety net" programs, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps. Under the proposal, most SNAP recipients would lose much of their ability to choose the food they buy with their SNAP benefits.

The proposal is included in the Trump administration budget request for fiscal year 2019. It would require approval from Congress.

Under the proposal, which was announced Monday, low-income Americans who receive at least $90 a month just over 80 percent of all SNAP recipients would get about half of their benefits in the form of a "USDA Foods package." The package was described in the budget as consisting of "shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit and vegetables." The boxes would not include fresh fruits or vegetables.

Currently, SNAP beneficiaries get money loaded onto an EBT card they can use to buy what they want as long as it falls under the guidelines. The administration says the move is a "cost-effective approach" with "no loss in food benefits to participants."

The USDA believes that state governments will be able to deliver this food at much less cost than SNAP recipients currently pay for food at retail stores thus reducing the overall cost of the SNAP program by $129 billion over the next 10 years.

This and other changes in the SNAP program, according to the Trump administration, will reduce the SNAP budget by $213 billion over those years cutting the program by almost 30 percent.

Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America, a hunger advocacy group that also helps clients access food-assistance services, said the administration's plan left him baffled. "They have managed to propose nearly the impossible, taking over $200 billion worth of food from low-income Americans while increasing bureaucracy and reducing choices," Berg says.

He says SNAP is efficient because it is a "free market model" that lets recipients shop at stores for their benefits. The Trump administration's proposal, he said, "is a far more intrusive, Big Government answer. They think a bureaucrat in D.C. is better at picking out what your family needs than you are?"

Douglas Greenaway, president of the National WIC Association, echoed that sentiment. "Removing choice from SNAP flies in the face of encouraging personal responsibility," he said. He says "the budget seems to assume that participating in SNAP is a character flaw."

It isn't clear how billions of dollars' worth of food each year would be distributed to millions of SNAP recipients who live all over the country, including dense urban areas and sparsely populated rural regions. The budget says states will have "substantial flexibility in designing the food box delivery system through existing infrastructure, partnerships or commercial/retail delivery services."

from kotaku:

YouTube stars Megan Turney and Gavin Free were forced to hide in their closet and call 911 last month after a fan armed with a handgun invaded their home and fired at least one round inside the house. He was then shot dead by police in the couples driveway.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that the intruder Christopher Gilesdescribed by police as single, lonely and disturbeddrove 11 hours from New Mexico to the couples home in Austin after growing infatuated with Turneys YouTube videos. Turney and Free were woken at 3:40am on January 26 by the sound of breaking glass and a gunshot.

While Giles searched the house for the couple, they hid in their bedroom closet and called 911. Giles, unable to find Turney and Free, returned to his car and attempted to drive off. While still in the driveway, however, Austin Police arrived and ordered him to stop.

A gunshot was then heard from inside the car, with Giles later pronounced dead with a .45 caliber handgun near his hand. While an official cause of death has not been announced, a preliminary postmortem examination by the Travis County Medical Examiner found that Giles may have shot himself.

UPDATE: KXAN subsequently report that, contrary to that preliminary examination, it was in fact police who killed Giles.

Two officers arrived at the home one minute after the 911 caller heard the gunshots. As they approached the home, Giles was about to drive off when they gave him commands to stop. At that time, police say Giles, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, shot at the officers. Officer Matthew Jackson returned gunfire, striking the suspect. The suspect died at the scene. No officers were injured.

Christopher Giles
An Austin detective wrote in court documents, obtained by The Albuquerque Journal, that A search of Giles cellular phone identified various notations identifying Megan Turney and Gavin Free by name. Furthermore, threatening thoughts were recorded by Giles and directed toward Gavin Free, i.e., I want Gavin Free to die alone, with no children.

Detectives searching Giles home say he was an avid player of video games and was known for watching YouTube videos that were centered on his hobby. They seized a number of items (two cellphones, a laptop, two tablets and an XBox gaming system) as evidence, and believe that evidence related to the planned burglary and homicides of Megan Turney and Gavin Free will be found.

Neither Turney or Free were harmed during the incident.

Turney is a cosplayer and former Rooster Teeth host with a popular YouTube channel, while Free is the co-creator of Rooster Teeths The Slow Mo Guys.

Quentin came in my trailer and didnt like to hear no, like any director, she says. He was furious because Id cost them a lot of time. But I was scared. He said: I promise you the car is fine. Its a straight piece of road.

Quentin told her to 'hit 40 miles per hour or your hair wont blow the right way and Ill make you do it again. But that was a deathbox that I was in. The seat wasnt screwed down properly. It was a sand road and it was not a straight road.

In video footage shared by the Times, Uma can be seen driving down a winding road and then crash into a tree. The steering wheel was at my belly and my legs were jammed under me. I felt this searing pain and thought, Oh my God, Im never going to walk again.' When I came back from the hospital in a neck brace with my knees damaged and a large massive egg on my head and a concussion, I wanted to see the car and I was very upset. Quentin and I had an enormous fight, and I accused him of trying to kill me. And he was very angry at that, I guess understandably, because he didnt feel he had tried to kill me.

Uma says that it took her 15 years for her to obtain the footage and that Miramax tried to get her to sign a document releasing them of any consequences of my future pain and suffering" in exchange for the footage. She didn't sign it.

When they turned on me after the accident, I went from being a creative contributor and performer to being like a broken tool," Uma said.

Basically, she says he angrily pressured her into filming the car-driving scene herself, after she expressed concerns about safety and suggesting a stunt performer do it.

She did it anyway, and crashed, damaging her neck and knees. Here's a video of the incident:

I guess he forgot that there is a huge demand in the US for drugs. The problem is more complex than what he portrays.

President Donald Trump threatened Friday to cut off aid to countries that allow drugs into the United States during a visit to the Customs and Border Protection National Training Center in Virginia.

"I want to stop the aid. If they can't stop drugs from coming in, 'cause they can stop them a lot easier than us. They say, 'oh we can't control it.' Oh great, we're supposed to control it," the President said. "So we give them billions and billions of dollars, and they don't do what they're supposed to be doing, and they know that. But we're going to take a very harsh action."

Trump specifically name-checked El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico in his criticism of countries whose citizens are coming into the United States illegally.

"We want strong borders. We want to give you laws. We want to stop the catch and release nonsense that goes on. You catch somebody and you release them. You know they're bad," he said. "They're pouring in from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, all over. They're just pouring into our country."

The President added: "These countries are not our friends, you know."
"We think they're our friends, and we send them massive aid, and I won't mention names right now," he said. "But I look at these countries, I look at the numbers we send them, we send them massive aid and they're pouring drugs into our country and they're laughing at us."
