Pretty fun. Poppy, direct indie rock, but nothing that blows my mind or anything. It may be a bit of a shallow or stupid nitpick, but I really preferred his lo-fi production on his earlier stuff, it just makes the songs hit harder for me. Very likable but not as memorable as Teens of Style imo

This one took a little bit to grow on me. At first it felt like a step down from the death-based imagery of Trans Youth, but the wrestling stuff really grew on me, this is just as emotional as some of Johns best. Slightly inconsistent, but the strong arrangements help distract you from that, these songs are among the most colorful in TMGs discography.

Some of Neils strongest song writing here... the songs hit very hard. Theres a sort of dread that is captured in this record that isnt heard on any of his other albums, especially with that grimy guitar tone on the second side. Everything here feels very raw and underproduced, just the way I like it. I have to be in the right mood for this one, but when I am, theres nothing better.

Ween - 12 Golden Country Greats

5/10
Im very hit or miss with Ween, but this is honestly the album I like most from them. My main problem with this band is they know how to write a good melody and stuff, and sometimes their silliness is just right, but often is too much. This feels a little tamer than their other records, the humor feels a little less outlandish when its combined with country. But it still has the same problems I usually have with Ween, just to a lesser extent. Some really fun stuff here but still too much Im annoyed by. I just wish this band took themselves slightly more seriously you know? Not a whole lot, but just a tiny bit.

Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West
The Mountain Goats - Tallahassee
Neil Young - After the Gold Rush

8/10
Goes on a bit longer than my favorite Modest Mouse releases (Building Nothing and M&A), but this is the group at arguably their most aggressive and emotional. No other band has ever quite captured the specific atmosphere that this album puts on, brilliant melding of fury and melancholy to create this imagery of hopeless white trash. The highlights here are some of the best rock has to offer, but Id definitely cut a few songs out. Either way, its a great album as is.

10/10
This is my favorite album period, so Im of course happy to see this here. I dont really know if my words can do this one justice, but I just cant think of a single thing Id change about this. From the emotional rollercoaster tale of the Alpha Couple, to the way the guitars are so forcefully (but not TOO forcefully!) plucked, to the beautiful organ solo at the end of Old College Try, to the way Johns voice screams in hysteria in No Children, to the way words like people say friends dont destroy one another, what do they know about friends? completely gut you, to the sheer cathartic joy of the we will RiIiiiiiISEeeee chorus of Peacocks... I could go on and on. This album so perfectly balances a sense of humor, raw genuine emotion, relaxing moments, heartbreaking moments and everything in between. Its perfect. Theres so much I feel like pointing out but Im rambling. This rules, The Mountain Goats rule, and this has helped me through so many hard times I cant thank it enough. Every relisten has enriched me with a new level of enjoyment, as Johns memories here begin to feel more and more like my own.

9/10
I always go back and forth on whats my favorite Neil record, some days its Harvest, some days its Zuma, some days its this. Who knows what itll be tomorrow. Id argue this is at least his most consistent album, even the seemingly throwaway tracks like Til the Morning Comes work great within the context of the album. The bright moments are placed very well to counteract the dark moments, taken as a whole album the pacing here is just fantastic. And this album just sounds great too, the sound of those hard hitting guitars and pianos is will cut you right to the bone. Great stuff.

Jailbreak is one of my favorite albums, but I dont think they really came close to capturing that magic again. Agalloch - From Which Of This Oak

7/10
I dont love anything here, but this record is a lot of fun. Crazy demented new wave, that is very very indebted to The Residents. I enjoy it about as much as I do the majority of The Resdients themselves, so this band is clearly doing something right. I also like how this album even has some reggae-esque elements to it at times.

Havent listened

6/10
Interesting choice for Agalloch, I forgot about this release. Its promising in areas, you can already tell they arent a typical black metal group, which is a sound theyd stray further away from over time, but they hadnt really found a way to properly meld their styles together yet. Im all for a rough recording quality, so I like the harsh bits, but the melodic stuff doesnt work here like it would on their later more polished records. A good start, but nothing amazing.

I definitely like older Nine Inch Nails but they definitely wouldnt count in my opinion.

Some of my favorite psychedelic bands are The Beatles, Kaleidoscope, Blue Cheer, and The Flaming Lips.

I noticed youve mostly been mentioning popular 90s rock, and I think popular rock mostly went downhill after the early 90s or so, but Im sure well find some stuff.
