I mean, she's the fun self-rescuing princess, but she'd never leave Picard alone when he needs Earl Grey Hot/book time. Which would put a strain on the relationship. You gotta let yo loved ones recharge.

S4E20 - "Qpid"
I don't think I've even seen something that is equal parts stupid and entertaining to the degree this episode is. Q is in fine form, I don't like Vash [and would argue she's a terrible choice for a recurring Picard love interest], and swash, swash, buckle, buckle. You also get the vibe that Q just gets jealous every great once in a while.

S4E21 - "The Drumhead"
This witchhunt got real spooky, real fast. Thought it was great as an audience member to be able to see someone with a single alien grandparent and the phenotypal effects. Great acting in this episode, and an example of how the most dangerous Betazoid is one with a personal agenda.

S4E22 - "Half a Life"
Oh, how good it is to see David Ogden Stiers act, and to see a character with a truly different personality and body type. Yaaay for Dr Timicin, and for Lwaxana in one of her more relatable episodes.

S4E17 - "Night Terrors"
This episode was super nope. Having had sleep issues in the past, it was not fun to watch everyone devolve into their worst selves through lack of sleep or disturbed sleep. Nope. I will take Data in charge any day though.

S4E18 - "Identity Crisis"
This episode freaked me out in only the best way. I loved watching Geordi play the sleuth and try to recreate the circumstances present in the video. The computer being able to isolate the outlines of people present was really exciting to me, although it seemed to need a fair amount of parameters to do so. The shadow figure created by the holodeck was my fave. ^^ Flashbacks of prior service records are always a good time in a Trek series - it's entertaining to see how they make the characters look slightly younger.

S4E19 - "The Nth Degree"
Nice to see Barclay back again - this raises an interesting ethical question of what to do when people are super duper advanced. Can you even relate anymore? Should we accept their actions, or judge them on our own limited understanding?

S4E15 - "First Contact"

Alternate title: Rivas Jakara and His Undeniable Animal Charisma. This was a fantastically entertaining episode. I do enjoy the idea of Starfleet infiltrating to learn more. Of course the society becomes super-paranoid after learning this, because who wouldn't? Funniest moment was finding out that Malcorian "dour sitcom dad" Krola stunned himself instead of killing himself.

S4E6 - "Legacy"

I like it when we can tie in memories of Tasha. Ishara is obviously related, and gets along pretty well with Data. The backstabbing wasn't very welcome, but hey. The Enterprise crew collectively feels that tug of loyalty.

S4E7 - "Reunion"

Picard as the Arbiter of Succession is great, he really understands how to use his position and make Klingons listen to him, not an easy task at all. This was a great episode for getting into the Klingon mindset, understanding their culture and trying to make it work. Some very sad, very poignant moments in this episode. I like K'Ehleyr better than almost any Klingon I've ever met.

S4E8 - "Future Imperfect"

Hats off to Riker on this episode. It takes quite an open mind to be able to see through the fabric of your own current existence and realize that someone, somewhere, is duping you. That alien at the end was unforgivably cliche in appearance.

S4E9 - "Final Mission"

This episode broke my heart, the writing very obviously designed to do two things: cement Picard as Wesley's father-figure, and get Wesley to grow. He actually did something without needing a bunch of validation, we acted out of necessity instead of a desire for personal accolades. Woo hoo.

S4E10 - "The Loss"

Okay everyone, say it with me: "what loss?" Apparently, Troi loses her empathic abilities [read: emotional restraint] and is a super control freak who hates herself when she can't use her abilities. She lashes out at others and generally acts like a spoiled, special snowflake this whole episode. I like her, but I don't like her vulnerable. Scenes with Riker were particularly meaningful because, you know. It's nice to see him be able to help her out for a change.

S4E11 - "Data's Day"

I could, and likely will, rewatch this episode a bunch in the future. It will become my 'bad day game changer'. It's just so happy. Data goes about his day quickly and efficiently, doing his job very well and his interpersonal relationships are a hit-or-miss scenario. Data's insistence on taking things literally is played to great effect. I wish he was writing to anyone but that jerk Maddox. I'll never forgive that guy.

S4E12 - "The Wounded"

Keeping up with the Cardassians. Bleugh. No thanks. I always like when we explore prejudices in Trek, since we see so little of it on a daily basis between the regularly scheduled characters.

S4E13 - "Devil's Due"

Ahhh, Ardra, the great and powerful. I am so amused by this character, and I love the little underlings that believe her every word and cower. It's so entertaining. Of course, the Religion Police, er, the Federation shows up and interferes a bunch. So figure that one out. But it was fun to watch, and I definitely enjoy any courtroom scenario involving any members of our dear bridge crew.

S4E14 - "Clues"

This is another one where we must carefully examine the fabric of our surroundings. This one was very fun and intellectual, and Data's role in all of this is pleasing. I watch with subtitles, so T Tauri did make me anticipate that the entire crew had started to stutter on account of being in space for too long.

The episode "First Contact" is next, folks!

you have snubbed the Picard :\

Provided I haven't angered the Picard, we should be okay.

S4E2 - "Family"

Picard gets in a physical knock-down, drag-out scuffle. Wes watches a particularly moving recording by his father from around the time of his birth. Worf's parents are completely adorable. The dad is such a dad, and the mom is amazing. Excellent casting. Still amused at how British the French characters have all managed to be. Picard's brother being particularly crotchety is awesome. I do love me some grumpy characters.

S4E3 - "Brothers"

I loved this episode, rewatch value is high. Lore dupes even me most times, and that's what keeps it fun. iirc Dr. Soong is also portrayed by Brent Spiner, I could tell by the voice. It's terrific. I really appreciated Data requesting privacy when saying his final farewell to his father. It really goes to show you that as much respect as the crew has for Data, sometimes it still doesn't register that he would want all the same privacy as a human being would. Also amazing that the android/human interaction reflects so strongly on regular human parent-child relationships.

S4E4 - "Suddenly Human"

Only benefit of this episode was seeing Picard as a father figure, and reaching a conclusion that made the most sense for the person in question. I appreciated that we finally understood that this boy's entire experience was not human and would not easily be human. Just because he is human doesn't mean that he should have to be with humans. IDIC was upheld.

S4E5 - "Remember Me"

This was a little freaky, but an excellent performance by Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher. It's killing me that she has never managed so far to tell Jean-Luc, but I guess that's what keeps the exciting tension in the air. I just wish my ships would sail already in this show. But I can always wait. It was nice seeing the Traveler again. I like watching him phase, it's a very cool effect.

S3E26 & S4E1 - "The Best of Both Worlds, Parts 1 and 2"

This was stunning. Amazing performances by everyone in the cast. The fear of the destructive, collective power of the Borg was real and immediate. I get extra spooked whenever I see absolutely wrecked starships with severe outer hull damage.

Data very calmly goes about accessing Borg collective while his circuits light up like a Christmas tree. I was totally sucked in here, and got very concerned. Apparently Data emerges as my fave, with Worf as a close second. Not surprising, as they take over the Spock role collectively [logic + alien].

Locutus = "he who speaks". I love these sorts of little relevant details that just enrich the experience.

Moving on to Season 4!

S3E23 - "Sarek"

Confession time, I saw Sarek and immediately blurted "Daddio!" and Tom will never let this go. Hey, man. I was almost exclusively a TOS fan for years. I can call Spock's dad by cutesy human nicknames if I please.

This episode was heartbreaking, Patrick Stewart's performance of mentally wrestling with all of Sarek's intense emotion literally made me cry and Tom had to give me hugs. Weh. I miss Amanda.

S3E24 - "Menage a Troi"

Lwaxana brightens my day once again. This was really entertaining, if only for Picard's Shakespearean outburst at the end there - and the screenshot that lives on as a meme even today. Not sure what purple garbage bag they were having Deanna wear, but I guess you gotta get comfy sometime :\

S3E25 - "Transfigurations"

I enjoyed this one. It was pretty bloody in the beginning there, but it was an interesting ride. Thank you, John Doe, for killing and bringing back Worf. We've got big plans in store for him.

Also note that it was really obvious we just applied shiny special effects to a dude in a bodysuit. But hey, you don't see me complaining.

Okay, okay. I get it.

S3E17 - "Sins of the Father"

Intense Klingons forever. I loved the character development with Worf, as well as Picard's steely resolve. Interesting to see how corruption takes hold in every society.

S3E18 - "Allegiance"

Yaaas. A "Twelve Angry Men" episode. I'm so happy. Also, Bolians have a center ridge that's so cool looking. Picard is good at this game, as he is with most games. I knew something was up when he started volunteering info, but it turns out he was just testing. A smart man.

S3E19 - "Captain's Holiday"

Can't quite accept the idea that Picard would be attracted to this girl. Ferengi more annoying than usual, didn't know that was possible. However, nice to see Picard get in a rough-and-tumble adventure for once instead of just letting his officers have all the fun.

S3E20 - "Tin Man"

Tin Maaan. So precious. My crackly baby easter egg. I can't care about Betazoids that aren't related to Troi, but I did have some compassion for this guy and his mental situation. I was surprised that he didn't find Data more calming, but I guess not being able to sense someone's presence is a little unnerving.

S3E21 - "Hollow Pursuits"

Wow, two mental health episodes in a row. This one was fascinating, this guy's portrayal of social anxiety was fascinating. It was both awkward and hilarious to watch the holodeck sequences. Tom kept quoting, "I am the goddess of empathy" and we were both laughing so hard.

S3E22 - "The Most Toys"

Whoever dies with the most toys, wins. I loved Data's civil disobedience here, and his reaction at the end with Riker was solid gold. Sent shivers down my spine! This guy was slimy, glad he got his just desserts in the end.

This episode admittedly lost me, but I did ultimately understand what was happening. I love all the repercussions that they discussed, and how willing the C crew was to go back and serve their purpose.

Every time I see Christopher McDonald, I think of his role in Flubber. It's not that he's a bad actor, I just associate him so strongly with that film.

Tasha Yar. I never knew how much I missed her until I saw her again. And that conversation with Guinan was so painful. Made it all better by asking Geordi at the end.

Yayyy whodunit. I love things like this. Reminds me of the film RAGE, where the film consists of different individual interviews by both eyewitnesses and supporting characters. You never see the accident being described, you just learn more and more from the differing accounts.

A diabolical inventor, this Dr. Apgar. Sadly, energy sources are less lucrative than deadly weaponry. Wow. Nicely done, everyone. And we managed to get it handled on the Enterprise-D, instead of handing Riker over to a court sure to put him on the fast track to punishment.

S3E13 - "Deja Q"

Hurrah for the return of Q. I am so amused that he is so insufferable as a human. He gives off an air of having been personally insulted the whole episode. John de Lancie is such a good time. The mariachi band and Data's belly laugh really made it wonderful.

I am amused that despite the overall professionalism I've observed on the Enterprise-D, Q's presence evokes annoyance from everyone. Even people who are not normally rattled or show negative emotions, like Troi or Guinan. I just love Q as a character development device. He also doesn't really stop Data from giving complete information, as others do, namely Picard. He's too busy pouting over his current situation.

Data as observer of humanity is a wonderful role. His observations as an outsider of sorts never fail to entertain me.

S3E12 - "The High Ground"

Great episode on terrorism and presenting both sides impartially. Star Trek, live forever.

Opportunity to see Beverly pretty upset in a few different ways. Tom noted that this was fairly rare for her, and it's so wonderful to get to see that. She'll be mildly frustrated from time to time, but this time she was genuinely reaching despair, sorrow, and rage. Hurrah for character development. Still want to know what she was going to tell the captain before the lights conveniently went out.

Also, can I just say that Worf is extraordinarily stealthy for a Klingon? Esp. of his size and stature? Like, whoa. It's like plot armor or something!

Does anyone know if Wil Wheaton calls Gates McFadden "mom" when he sees her IRL? If I was him, I would so do that. They are well-cast as son and mom.

S3E11 - "The Hunted"

I was very afraid of Troi's compassionate nature here, glad it wasn't used to put them all in danger. I'm really impressed with the overall professionalism of the Enterprise-D crew. They are part of a merit-based system, but it's still awesome to see people doing what they do best, for the good of everyone else, no matter what.

That being said, I felt that the sink in Danar's detainment cell was the proverbial rifle on the wall. I really wanted him to try and get out of there by feigning a suicide attempt in the water. This episode asked really good ethical questions, ones that must be asked of societies and their treatment of veterans everywhere. You can't just push aside a whole group of people because you screwed up. That's not okay.

Picard's abandonment at the end was so delicious. Please tell me there will be many more "you've made your bed, and now you have to lie in it" moments with Capt. Cueball. I would be thrilled, he does it so well.

EDIT: Forgot to mention noticing James Cromwell on sight, and laughing about a Babe crossover.

Btw the Klingon assistance at the end is very much NOT a throw-away. It's to demonstrate Picard's strategic foresight and the esteem that the Klingons have for him as well as deepening ties between the Federation and the Empire.

I'm well aware of that. But the script didn't treat it as that important. The lines of dialogue given were what seemed throwaway, to me.

I got to the last episode of S3 and then stalled out. No particular reason, that's a great episode, but I need to get back to it.

Yaaay. TNG is a good time - get back to it when you can. ^^

S3E10 - "The Defector"

Another interesting Romulan episode - this time using one of their defectors to trap the Enterprise-D in the Neutral Zone. Thought it was cute that Picard asked Data to impartially remember everything. Uh, if the ship is destroyed and all hands lost, Data won't be of much use. Especially if he's taken by the Romulans, which is mentioned in this episode, they'd likely pick him apart without a second thought.

The Klingon assistance at the end was just used as a throwaway? I thought that was a little silly. Although I am glad our heroes escaped unharmed. It's just that brief historical overlap between Klingon and Romulan ship design [and likely because I'm a TOS fan], it caused some confusion.

Well, on to the next one.

What way are you viewing TNG? Not super crucial or anything, but there was an Remastered dealio that happened these last few years that did a lot to make the show feel that extra bit more snazzy (as well as fix a number of background nitpicks people discovered over the years). It should be available on most streaming places, i know Amazon and Netflix should have it at least.

I'm watching it on Netflix.

S3E9 - "The Vengeance Factor"

This was sincerely spooky. Loved the different emotions tied in, and it gives Picard a chance to demonstrate his faith in his officers. Riker shows up and shoots a dude, and Picard's reaction is, "I'm sure he has a good reason". Love it.

Also female villain is yay. I feel that I don't see enough of those, or enough that pose a real threat.

Worf was very sassy about being able to smell the Gatherers coming. All in all, a terrific episode.

S3E7 - "The Enemy"

Interesting game here, Picard plays it skillfully as usual. Kinda glad we kept Worf's character intact, it was amazing for Picard to point out that Worf would not complain even if a reason existed. That was an important observation on Picard's end, and a great one to share with Worf.

Geordi is the man I want with me if I need to talk anyone down off the ledge. He creates such great rapport with friends, teammates, and now total strangers. He gives each person he interacts with the distinct impression that we're on the same team, trying to solve the same problem.

S3E8 - "The Price"

Poor Troi, all she wanted was some chocolate and what she got was some weird wormhole viewing party and some old news dreamboat. Oh good, and he's self-absorbed, too. Oh good, and he's a creeper, too.

This is too much, too fast. I'm unhappy.

This wormhole is not epilepsy friendly.

Fanservice stretching scene?

"It's just business" isn't ever said by a good guy. This guy's pushy and I don't like him. Essentially telling Troi she's the problem. Boo. Omg and he brought up Troi to Riker. Riker offers ice for burn.

Each episode makes it even more unbelievable that the Ferengi were ever in the running to be the main villains of this series. They're like speed bumps - not intimidating, and certainly annoying.

Hallelujah, Deanna Troi. Yaaas queen. Time to say goodbye to Mr. Loser.

S3E5 - "The Bonding"

Worf is wonderful. This is the first time I can remember Troi effectively counseling him. He really is just heavily shielded, with a different cultural background to factor in - but he also needs the same counseling as everyone else. Depiction of loss throughout the crew is accurate.

Data is great at 'making it strange', the scriptwriters have done an excellent job of bringing him in to comment on aspects of human interaction that are second nature to us, but would be unusual to artificial intelligence.

Death/sorrow is a hard sell, but at least we got some meaningful grief and mourning out of it. Character development for Wesley is a victory - nice to know how he felt initially vs how he feels now. I felt the other kid was well-cast because he didn't oversell the crying. Had to suspend my disbelief at his reaction to the mom reappearing though. He is 12! He should have had some level of skepticism.

Mintakans are proto-Vulcans, and dang if they aren't adorable. I'm really entertained by the Prime Directive as a plot device. I feel like we focused on this far less in TOS, so it really stands out.

"We have angered the Picard!" will now be a staple quote of our apt for the next few weeks at least.

I still think Picard should have given himself a small cut/scrape on the Enterprise so all this could have been avoided. Ah well.

Typical rate will be one TNG episode per day, Tom and I usually watch over breakfast. More if free time is available.

DS9 is pretty much the one Trek series which feels like it has a more modern television approach. (The upcoming sixth series will no doubt make DS9 look its age, but yeah.) Although in the beginning it can be a difficult watch -- several S1 episodes are literally just retooled rejected TNG scripts and numerous characters are obviously pretty wooden for a little while -- it turns surprisingly serialized for 90's American TV as it goes on, and more time is spent on lasting character development and juggling several show-length narrative plot lines than you'll find in the other Trek stuff.

Anyway, you can sorta chart the beauty standards of the years these shows were produced as you follow along with them. 1989-90 was an ugly year, I guess. XD It's probably not until 1997 or so that multiple cast members in the 1987-2005 nonstop Trek-on-TV era stop looking so utterly dated. As a big space opera nerd it has always amused me how these future settings are so blatantly the year they were produced...but I suppose it is far better than the alternative of trying to manufacture unique hairstyles and looking even geekier for it.

Also, I should probably warn you now: I am likely to be very prolific in this topic. <_<; Star Trek is my favorite franchise!

Oh, no worries. Although I don't mind talking to myself in a vaccuum, I do like to have others participate.

Yeah, I'm glad they stuck with what they know rather than fall victim to inescapable zeerust. It's painful to look at some things from the 60s especially, and I say this as a TOS fan! I do like how much warmer and more comfortable the 1701-D looks compared to the original, or even the refit. It follows that design - you see more of the characters' downtime, living quarters, etc. I'm fascinated by character development alone, perfectly happy with something like '12 Angry Men' where the dialogue fills in all the plot info and rounds out the characters. So when I get the special treat of seeing characters just exist, eat, talk to friends, sleep, have leisure time - I'm thrilled.

If DS9 follows the approach of modern television, it's no wonder my dad nicknamed it "Deep Six This". Thankfully, I have a more open mind.

Obligatory mention that y'all should do DS9 too. It's my favorite show! Far less episodic than TNG once it gets going and it takes a lot of stuff introduced in TNG and fleshes it out.

Shoddy first couple of seasons, though, but TNG has the same conundrum. (Now that you're in S3, you'll likely note a general uptick in quality.)

If you've already watched DS9 and made it to the great parts and it's not to your taste, I'll probably cry a little bit, but I'll still enjoy this watchthrough!

Yeah, I'm seeing the quality improvement in S3, minus the makeup. These first couple episodes have been horrid - bold strumpet blush must have become a new Federation regulation for the ladies.

I have never tried DS9, but I am willing to give it a try.

Hey guys! I have been watching TNG for a little while now, and at the start of season 3, I've decided to start up a watch topic. I am watching TNG for the first time, so I'm pretty excited. Character development has been pretty good so far, and I appreciate the differences between this and my absolute fave [TOS].

Here we go!

S3E1 - "Evolution"
Dr. Stubbs is pretty passionate about stuff. I did enjoy his comeuppance and the little nanites speaking through Data was nifty. This is one of Wesley's better 'happy accidents'.

S3E2 - "The Ensigns of Command"
I have never seen Riker be so harsh with Data before. It's kinda fun to see the "I don't want excuses, I want results" side of Mr Charismatic Beard. Kinda wish that romance had worked out, but hey. Maybe I'm the only one who thinks Data would be husband material?

S3E3 - "The Survivors"
One part Twilight Zone, 2 parts awkward random visitors. Glad everything worked out, but that ending was psychologically a little freaky for me. Enjoyed seeing Riker strung up like a Christmas ham, if only for a moment. Also Troi in this episode = me throughout the election season. "Stop! Please stop!"
