Gloomhaven is D&D thematically, that's for sure, but it plays more like a hybrid of Euro games and thematic games. The combat is more like a puzzle. You don't throw dice and do stat checks. You manage your card hand and figure out the best plays to make. --- |

So like, when people see you with that set, then they know you took that monster on hardcore and you're good at it, etc. It looks like this new system has a generic pool of "points" you can get a number of ways. It takes the joy out of targeting a specific armor set. Imagine if you were playing Dark Souls, and there's a hard boss in your way, and you can either keep fighting that boss and try to beat it, or go this other route where you can kill 300 zombies and then you can automatically get past that boss. It's kinda like that. Takes the thrill out of the fact that you got past the boss. Lame. That is, if this point system works out I think it works. --- |

They replaced exciting grinding where you kill a specific monster in hopes of possibly hitting the jackpot, with monotonous grinding where you just collect a bunch of points to spend, like in Destiny. --- |

I guess modern games really are a hell of a lot easier than older games, even just going back to PS2 days. When you die, you have replay the ENTIRE level. There are no checkpoints. The crazy thing is, I don't remember this ever being a problem for me when I was playing this game for the first time back in the day. But now it just totally pisses me off. Anyway, that cave troll kicked my ass. He kills you in only a few hits, and he takes a million hits, all while little guys are all over the place taking shots at you. And when you die, you gotta redo that whole section. Fuck that. --- |
