They're all pretty good, yeah, although I think I'd put Waver up there with them, too, by the end of F/Z.

Waver definitely develops pretty well. It's just a shame about everybody else who is supposed to come across as sympathetic...

Alright, I've watched both the 48-minute opening episodes now. I've got to say, I'm feeling a metric ton warmer about Rin, Shiro and Sakura than I was about anybody human in Fate/Zero.

I keep spelling it incorrectly because Shiro is the main character in Gundam 08th MS Team

Anyway, I'm on a nice little wintry stroll and then I'm gonna start removing the Limiters from bait works. There's a prologue "episode 0" or something on Netflix so I guess I'll begin there

I was surprised to learn that Shiro (it was Shiro, not Shoujo; I couldn't remember), who Eddv mentioned in passing to me this past Friday, was just some red-haired kid. You see, I thought Fate/Stay Night was going to be set like 60 years later since I could swear they said in the first episode that the Holy Grail War occurs every 60 years. Either I misremembered or the plot goes in a different direction. Either way, my strange lunatic fringe theories about various characters becoming Shiro are now pretty lol, but in my defense Eddv said this was comparable to not knowing who Palpatine is in the prequels. It turns out Palpatine is just some cameo kid.

A cameo kid who, along with Rin if the vibe I'm getting from Fate/Zero's ending is correct, will move forward bigly for the sequel series. I'm already rolling my eyes a bit at Shiro telling Kuritsugu he's too old to be a hero so he'll be a hero for him; Kuritsugu is, what, 26? And I'm not just saying that because I'm 30 now; I thought that particular tidbit popular in Japanese media was goofy even when I was Shiro's age. I'll have to hope the kid's got more depth than all that, but it's a measure of relief to see him start out so sympathetically heroic, at least. I'm sure, this being the same universe as Fate/Zero, he'll run the risk of going uber-Machiavellian just like his 'old man'.

In the final telling, I'd give this show about a 7.5. I enjoyed it a fair bit as I watched it, but in the back of my mind I always knew it was missing that one pivotal ingredient to make it a classic for me: a cast of characters I really dig. I'm glad I watched it, but it won't be topping any charts.

Onward to UBW!

Fate/Zero was a whirlwind of plot machinations offered up in the crispy shell of excellent action. The Yuki Kajiura soundtrack, while far from her best, still served to heighten tension and improve the tempo the whole way through. The basic narrative structure intrigues, the second-act twists enrich. There's a thoughtfulness to the show not always found in this genre. It's not without its flaws.

For starters, there's more of what I like to label ~idealz_speak~ at play here than almost any episodes of UC Gundam. I get that the conceit behind bringing a bunch of legendary heroes together in a Japanese television production is that a few of them will be watered down into ace pilots who want to bring about ~a_new_worldz~ but it goes overboard with this, it really does. Worst of all is Kirei, who, ironically, I rather like by the end. But I can't ignore that even in liking him more, he's still playing into straight-up Devil May Cry degrees of dialogue. It's cheese and I like the cheese and I like the show for all its cheese but objectively speaking -- looking back, you know? -- it's pretty darned silly. "A reason to fight... I've finally found it." <---Dissidia called, it wants its wild rose back. That said, Kirei's "reason to fight" being "spread calamity the world over" works pretty well courtesy of Crispin "ARUBEDOOO...!" Freeman, so it's all good, innit? But I could have done with less of all this and more genuine wit throughout.

Then there's the cast. This is the unfortunate bit. I never felt particularly attached to most of these people in ways that I do with shounen fare like Dragon Ball Z Kai, Yu Yu Hakusho, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I think it's simply a matter of the inherent structure here. I like several of the characters just fine, but precious few of them really pop out at me in a big way. Saber, Rider, and Waver are honestly the only protagonistic characters that work for me much at all. Kariya is sympathetic, Kirei and Gilgamesh start to bedazzle near the end as villains, and I came around to Kuritsugu more than I anticipated. But if I'm ranking Fate/Zero on its cast, I have to give it like a flat 5 overall.

For these woes, it still impresses me with its boldness in the second season and the dumb joy of its Big Honking Dialogue (complete with Gundam 00 levels of repeating people's names ad nauseum). The action rarely lets up, but when it does, it sometimes feels like the show is trying to be more than the sum of its parts. Episodes 10 through 12 is the series low point because the characters lack the requisite depth for their theatrical gravitas to carry the plot during more introspective fare. Compare this with the high water marks of several heroes teaming up to fight Caster + the final string of fights in the last couple of episodes and it's night and day. That said, I did appreciate the development for Kuritsugu in his flashback episodes, but it would have worked far better on someone more nuanced, more morally approachable but still grey, like Psycho-Pass' Shinya Kogami. (Season 3 when? Sigh.)
