I'll play Fallout 3 first and if it turns out to be good I'll try NV just for the sake of trying, would definitely be interested to see why the game has such polarizing opinions.

FO3 is more atmospheric with much better world building, NV has better mechanics and story telling.

Really? How so?

As I said below.

Older games were harder to get in to but opened up fast as you leveled, you start struggling but quickly build up an armory and fortify it. A skill curve is so important to keep the game interesting and it really didn't grab me, particularly when in early game it says "Level up 15 more times to upgrade this gun once! ...Or pick up that combat rifle and headshot everything.".

How has the gameplay worsened? Do you mean worsened from Fo3/NV?

It's very linear, you don't get different weapons as much as you get direct upgrades with some pointless "upgrades" that move much more laterally. Bethesda has tried hard to keep the seemingly free levelling system set so you have to improve in certain ways or you won't see improvements reliably with levels. You can't specialise as you'll find yourself waiting til post game to get later weapon upgrades when you could've focused on armour for a while or another attack type to spread out your effectiveness.

I miss being free to gimp my defense to stack my offense or abandon combat to improve utilities, you used to be semi-free to make an aggressive archetype.

Nah, just that prison isn't the answer. Fines/tariffs/garnishes as well as emotional support (similar to child support) would help.

The goal is to decrease the net total of crime among the populace - the individual criminal doesn't matter.

Logically you should offer these services prior to crimes to deter crime, not encourage it. After all, you're implying all criminals are just damaged people who haven't been helped yet.

Not really, you don't hold them indefinitely because it's impractical and you don't kill them to avoid looking like a tyrant. Punishments are doled out as a show of strength to keep the opponent and their allies suppressed.

Zeus posted...
More importantly, you're citing a system that came far later.

Otherwise, the old legal system allowed a noble to arrest a commoner for *any* reason.

They're the same reason. You don't imprison people for no reason, you do it because of some kind of slight from some perspective. You're also ignoring that a lord's right to control his people on his land is a right of the lord as the ruler of that land, it's not a law imposed on him or the people.

Zeus posted...
And, it should be noted, that traditionally old punishment systems didn't "kick the shit out of rapists," they punished by either fining them, forcing the rapist to marry their victim, or raping the rapist's female relative.

And it should be noted that a bunch of ancient tribal pagans do not represent modern values. Rape is a crime socially treated similarly to murder, and back then they would be hung. This feels appropriate now.

Every crime should get a corporal punishment associated with it and every criminal gets offered the chance to take that over prison.

Punishments vary from stocks to hangings and every punishment is published in all national newspapers. Graffiti gets stocks for the afternoon, assault gets lashings, murder gets stocks for a week with the public allowed to inflict violence on them freely, etc..

Technically it was always there to some degree.

https://www.crimemuseum.org/crime-library/famous-prisons-incarceration/history-of-imprisonment/

The original purpose of confining a person within a prison was not to punish them, but was a means of keeping the perpetrator of a crime detained until the actual punishment could be carried out. This was usually in the form of corporal punishment that was intended to cause the guilty person pain, such as being beaten with a whip, or capital punishment which used a variety of methods to claim the lives of condemned individuals.

London is known as the birthplace of modern imprisonment. A Philosopher named Jeremy Bentham was against the death penalty and thus created a concept for a prison that would be used to hold prisoners as a form of punishment.

Prison isn't to cure the ill, it's to punish the wicked and take perpetrators out of society.

I want old prison back, there's a lot to be said to kicking the shit out of rapists.

Not at all. You may have more options than some men, but your options are also more likely to beat you with that stick, or their own fists. Win some lose some.

Do tell me how you are beaten by random guys all day but men are never hit by women. This is why feminism is so militant, men are demonised so become a fair target.

But anyway, I bet the actual issue is that those who are in prison for longer than 3 months have commited crimes bad enough that they'd have to be a real POS to commit them, or they become incapable of getting a job as their crime is off-putting so they're fucked in trying to start over.
