I think this kinda stuff is cool actually. not that he cheated, but that as our understanding and knowledge of technology increases we can figure out that he cheated. even if it happened a long time ago. eventually people find out. that's really cool.

a very enigmatic user. I think there's a very small number of people on board 8 who I'd say that I really like. dante is among them, but among that group he's probably the only person who I haven't actually had very many personal one-on-one conversations with through any kind of messenger app. maybe none? I can't remember if he was ever on aim much. he almost seems like someone I'd have difficulty maintaining a conversation with. but he has an odd sort of charisma that makes him likable even with only reading weird, disconnected posts on a message board every few days or sometimes every few weeks.

truthfully I feel like I still don't know dante all that well, but there's nothing about him that I dislike.

5 was pretty good, but the way it ended I knew I had no intention of coming back for season 6

prometheus was truly the greatest villain this show has ever had. he even terrorized the audience by showing us a version of the show which could be good, before allowing it to go back to trash.

neat, other folks studying chinese. if you're not familiar btw there's a pretty cool extension for chrome and firefox called pera pera that automatically reads and translated hanzi for you. I guess in a way it's kind of a crutch because I can just hover over what granzon has posted and see what the characters mean. but it can be helpful for quickly understanding text without having to constantly look things up.

btw granzon how long have you been studying? I'm not an expert myself or anything but I will say that your syntax still has a very english/western feel to it. you're writing characters in an order that would make sense if you were speaking a sentence in english and then translating the words directly to chinese, rather than writing things the way the would be spoken from one native chinese speaker to another.

also kind of funny but speaking of books I have literally used elementary school instructional books in the past. when your skill level with a language is at elementary school level sometimes that is a nice place to start!

I only have my brights on when the road itself is not lit, and there are no cars approaching me or driving in front of me.

this is fairly accurate. in general I only use mine if I feel like I really need to.

I'm also super sensitive to bright lights so I'm probably more mindful of this in regards to other people as a result. like if someone is driving anywhere behind me that is within my range of vision and they have their brights on it causes me extreme discomfort. I usually intentionally slow down until they pass me.

I don't really like Memrise. At least, its Russian section didn't seem particularly helpful, or maybe its section on the app was super half-assed or something i dunno

well on this note I will say one of the issues with memrise is that the content is user generated. so for example if there are no users who have designed any good lessons for the russian language section then you're not going to have as good results. it's also possible there are some good russian lesson plans and some bad ones, and you just selected one of the bad ones.

If it doesn't have Duolingo's terribly possessive and punishing design, I'd wager it's better.

can't make a direct comparison but at least for me I always felt like memrise allowed me to do basically whatever I wanted to do. you can spend time reviewing the sections that you've already completed, or you can advance to new sections at as fast of a rate as you wish. I could even skip to the final sections of the current lesson I'm on, if I wanted. it doesn't even force you to do things in a linear order. it will give them to you in a linear order if you follow the plan, but if you go to the overview you can select sections at any rate or order you wish.

I haven't used duolingo so I can't make a comparison.

I will say that using memrise helped me with stuff that I wasn't really getting when I used rosetta stone. not really a comparison to be made there either but it's a good complimentary tool.

learning an instrument is good as someone above mentioned. I've been wanting to start practicing again lately but generally it doesn't go well for me and I get even more depressed. I have permanent damage to my left hand that makes it so I can't really play guitar or bass anymore and every time I want to put in more time and try to practice I just struggle and can't play the way I want to.

you can learn a new language in your own free time with objective-based results and programs that track your progress. for example I've used it for quite some time now as a way to study for the HSK, since there are specific training programs for that. but you can find one for basically anything you're interested in.

though to be honest this is definitely closer to the 'self improvement' than 'fun hobby' side of things. so I'd really only suggest that if you're the type of person who actually finds learning new things and mastering new skills to be fun.

I also really like Supergirl but it's pretty straightforward so far.

I think this is one of the reasons it doesn't have much discussion despite being decently popular. there just isn't that much to talk about really. also people love complaining on the internet. going "oh you liked it? I liked it too" isn't all that much of a conversation sadly.

Reign is badass

Reign is pretty badass, yeah. the episode with her first fight against Kara was my favorite battle on any of the CWVerse shows that I've seen. although I only watched Flash through season 2, and Arrow up to a certain point (5 I think?) ... oh and Legends season 1 and part of season 2.

I'm like 95% sure at this point that her powers are magic based or something along those lines. if they never say it or explain it this is the explanation I'm going with since it makes the most sense. if they do confirm it I won't be surprised. if they give us another explanation I guess I'll be forced to go along with whatever the canon says.

Supergirl's been good. It felt rather forced how quickly the new woman became besties with Kara and Alex, but oh well. I remember feeling the same way about Kara and Lena's friendship last season, but eventually they forced it enough that it became natural.

I've seen this mentioned by others before as well and I kinda agree that Sam becoming best friends with everyone happened a bit too fast. but it is TV so I guess they're just trying to reach the level of plot relevance that they need her to be at, and they wanted to do it quickly. the good thing at least is that they have done a decent-to-great job of following up on that promise. like yeah them all referring to each other as best friends after meeting twice was jarring, but the scenes this week where Sam and Alex were alone together it felt like they had really strong moments. the development that should lead to them becoming close is happening after the natural conclusion of them becoming close, but at least we're getting the development at all. some shows will just tell you 'these characters are best friends' or 'these characters are in love' and never reaffirm it for the audience at all.

I have read that it's recommended to drink half to an ounce for each pound you weigh

interesting. I weigh a little under 150 lbs and I keep a 17 oz container with me that I refill with water during the day. normally I refill it around 4 times, but sometimes 5. after checking the math this seems to add up, too. I should be refilling my container somewhere between 4 and 5 times per day which is pretty much what I do!

that's closer to 2L than 3L though so this weight dependent formula seems to be easier to achieve rather than just trying to drink 3L for the sake of drinking 3

I guess for an example of forward leading

liao and xiao are pronounced differently, but this almost seems too obvious. maybe that's why I didn't think of it at first. there's like a billion examples that follow this rule. although I will say that while the li and xi sounds are different from each other, the ao is the same in both of these words. and to complicate matters further, the li in liao is not pronounced the same as the li in just li.

I'm not sure if there's a hard rule or not. with the sh and shn example I mentioned above, the ending dominates the beginning. l and li is the same as well. they have totally different pronunciations and this is entirely dictated by those last two letters. I can't think of any examples off the top of my head where the beginning dominates but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

anyway I think the issue here is that your japanese knowledge is making you think of pinyin as being similar to kanji or even romanji. like, in order to make lia you'd have to combine li and a. but this is not the case. in hanzi (and in pinyin), li and lia are their own separate things which have nothing to do with each other. this is why although zin doesn't exist I guarantee a pinyin reader could look at it and know how it was pronounced. there are a bunch of examples for them to go off of; yin, bin, pin, min, nin, lin, jin, qin, and xin are all pronounced the same.

it's sort of like english in a way. we all know how fox and box are pronounced. dox might not be a real world, but if we see it we know how to pronounce it.

anyway the issue I think is that you're naturally focusing on the 'zi' and thinking that everything pronounced in pinyin which starts with 'zi' would naturally follow those pronunciation rules when moving forward through the word. this isn't exactly correct although you kinda have the right idea, 'zi' is not some kind of key symbol which has rules that have precedence over everything that evolves from it.

the issue here is that in hanzi, the character which end in 'i' and the ones that end with 'in' don't have the same starting syllables. but my point is that with pinyin if you simply attach the n ending to a different letter, the romanization makes it work because all of the sounds that end with n sound the same

this makes more sense, I see what you're getting at now.

since it doesn't exist as a hanzi character though there really is no precedence at all. the speaker would have to simply read it and figure out how it is pronounced.

pinyin uses romanized characters with tone markers. so yeah it would basically just be 'zin.'

since the tone is neutral here you wouldn't even need a tone marker.

I'm not talking around you, I'm saying this part of your statement is wrong. the collection of sounds do exist. you'd have to write them in pinyin. you cannot write them in hanzi. it seems you have a misunderstanding that if something can't be written in hanzi it can't be pronounced by a chinese speaker. that's not correct.

at the very least it would be more accurate for you to say "that isn't a collection of sounds which exist in the hanzi alphabet." that would be correct.

I might get eviscerated for this but my understanding is that turbulence is when you have a flow rate that changes over time in a way that can't be predicted by the model. so rather than thinking of turbulence as a thing, I just think of turbulence as a code word for 'we can't predict the behavior of this system.'

so yeah my overall point is that a chinese person could easily pronounce 'zin' and anyone who understands pinyin could intuitively figure out how to read and pronounce 'zin.' the only issue is that the hanzi characters to write 'zin' in chinese do not exist.

pinyin has a ton of words that begin with the letter z and the 'dz' sound is really common in mandarin

so I'm guessing zin would be fine for chinese. the word zin has no direct translation but as a name it seems like it would be fine? 'john' doesn't actually have any translation other than meaning the name john. the actual biggest issue is that I believe there is no possible way to write 'zin' with chinese characters, which could be a problem.

basically there is precedent for similar words to be pronounced, but no existing characters to actually write the word down. unless all of the game text was written in english this could be a problem.

really happy with all of these nerfs, especially how there are some super important wild nerfs in there.

the state of wild HS would be forever made worse if cards like patches and raza had stayed there forever as is. also despite these adjustments coming super, super late... I'm almost hesitant to say "too late" in this specific case. with it coming at the end of the standard cycle it seems almost fitting. like, standard meta is supposed to be its own unique, distinct thing. so the standard cycle that just ended was the one where patches dictated a lot of the meta, and raza had a huge impact in the later half of the cycle. but now that this standard cycle is ending the experiment is kinda over and we need to fix these cards so they don't ruin wild forever.

only a small percentage of the population has generally had the ability to understand complicated ideas or to approach delicate subjects with nuance. this isn't actually a new phenomena.

I agree it is frustrating how a decent amount of modern culture revolves around the idea of being miserable and even glorifies it. this does seem to be a fairly recent thing but, like all trends, it will likely pass.

I don't think you should be getting into arguments with customers at the place where you work.

personally I never gained any enjoyment out of arguing with others or beating my head against the wall trying to get shallow people to understand complicated ideas. the only thing that ever made me happy was learning how to ignore them and move on with my life.

4 and 6 are the most likely explanations. if you're 100% sure it's not 4 then 6 seems really likely. also as someone who has studied a little bit of magic, I can say that 6 sounds exactly like how a lot of tricks work. you basically introduce a premise to the audience and then do something that breaks the rules without them realizing it.

using an app that would spit out a pre-determined number to make it seem like he was predicting her number ahead of time is EXACTLY the kind of set up you'd expect a magic trick to have if you were designing one. and, additionally, this explains why he asked her to use such large numbers. the trick is designed to guarantee that no one could actually multiply those numbers in their own head.

(understanding this basic idea is the best way to see through a lot of different magic tricks. there is always something the magician will be doing which doesn't have a clear explanation, some aspect of the trick. they'll use patter to distract you from it most often. but if you realize what that thing is you just have to figure out how to explain that 'why did the numbers have to be 5 digits?' you can pretty much figure out how the trick was done)
