Oh, I should clarify, I thought episodes 2 through 8 or so of Fate/Zero had a ton of great confrontations and action and all that jazz. I was just surprised to be hitting the end of the first season and then finding that that's when stuff slowed down!

I will also note that I'm pretty much jumping straight to F/SN UBW afterward.

Leonhart4 posted...
Yeah, like I said, season 2 doesn't mess around. I think I'd have liked Kiritsugu more if he had shown more affection to Irisviel instead of cheating on her with Maiya. Like, they really pulled out all the "rub me the wrong way" traits for this guy.

But yes, Saberwasright

The cheating-with-Maiya thing has been like five seconds tops that hasn't really gone anywhere else, at least not yet. Not saying it makes it better. Just saiyan, like, kinda super-random!

I blitzed through episodes 11 through 17 or so of Fate/Zero. I was telling Leon last night that it's super-strange to me how, like, the first season has a lot of exposition going on and not a lot of straightforward confrontation and/or climax up until the tail end of the thirteenth and final episode. Just seemed so alien to me. Usually something really big builds in the last couple of episodes, you know? But then he looked up the air dates and apparently it was like a couple of months max between seasons so nevermind. This is pretty chill then.

But seriously? Comparing 10-12 to like 15-17 is insane. So much stuff hits the boiling point. I'll start with the most recent (and most constantly telegraphed) death, which is Tohsaka's of course. Kirei killing him honestly could have been foreshadowed in a single darn scene instead of several but then we wouldn't have so much amusing Kirei/Gilgamesh lulz where the dialogue kicks it to next-level absurdity with awkward pauses and treatises on joy galore. I need this in my veins so it's OK. Kirei is so weird though, isn't he? Wild card theory is that Gilgamesh ends up betraying him too but I don't know. According to @Eddv one of these jokers becomes, uh, Shoujo or something and me not knowing who that is/what that means is the equivalent to watching the Star Wars prequels oblivious to Palpatine soooo shrug. We'll see!

(Also OP2 makes it look like Kiritsugu and Kirei fuse a la Digimon's fourth season so maybe they collectively become Shoujo... ahaha, no. But maybe? But no.)

Speaking of loudspeaker foreshadowing, I boldly predict that Iri might die before this show has ended.

Speaking of death, what a way to go out, Lancer! Man. You see Caster all blissful in the pending light of EX...! CALIBUUUUR! but then Lancer gets such a raw deal. He hates everybody and his eyes go yellow. Dang. Is this guy gonna be a problem in Fate/Stay Night? Poor soul. RIP JYB too. Ryunosuke was so happy seeing his own blood. :3 :3 :3 Nice guy. Bit odd?

Draco Malfoy Archibald and his snake wife Soulja Gurl got played like fiddles to Kiritsugu's cunning when Maiya shot 'em point-blank. Can't say I feel bad they're dead (not that we're supposed to) but that chat between Kiritsugu and Saber after is rough tides, yo. I bet it's quoted by 15-year-old 30-year-olds on every anime subforum known to man because it sounds cool and open and crisp and meaningless, but Kiritsugu, what world are you even trying to save, here? Or does it turn out that it's Iri? Because your strange globalist-yet-purposeless approach to "I'm gonna save the world" is just so anime half-cocked, Lelouch-esque. I like you more than Leon does (you have a great design, okay?!) but #SaberWasRight.

The past few episodes have been such a splendid whirlwind that I almost forgot to tell you Papa Priest Man Kotomine is dead too. Man, when Malfoy shot him outta the blue it was such a great moment. You know what else was a great moment? Kirei "Crispin" Kotomine smirking into the reflection of the blade his master gives him just before killing him dead. Poor Tohsaka. Leon raised a great point that Kariya really should have told him precisely what his daughter Sakura is going through, what with the worms and stuff. He was misguided but he seemed to truly love his children, y'know? Ah well. What's done is done.

well "friends" is stretching it but you could definitely make the "case" that FFX and KH take place in the same universe based on Auron's role in KH2

So, KH, VII and X share a Universe, and maybe Cloud connects Ivalice as well which means so do XII, T, and IV, and potentially V, VIII, IX XIII, and Dragon Quest. Which may or may not lead to III (depending on who you ask)

I ask Estelle

Watched 3 or 4 more episodes between last night (after an excellent episode of The Crown followed by a somewhat weaker one) and this morning. More fighting, this time in the forest. The action sequences in this show are seriously off the chain. What is the production value here? Mercy, me. Action's rarely my favorite part of even shounen anime (yeah, I know lol) but it might be my favorite part of Fate/Zero.

I'm definitely leaning toward Kiritsugu Emiya being the victor of this show since he made that big Machiavellian decision not to care about the kidnapped children and focus on his "ideal world" aims. He's just an all-around Lelouch Lite. I like him but I can see why some people wouldn't. And depending on how far he takes this, I will no longer like him. Saber is still top-tier regardless though. Lancer and Rider aren't far behind.

Anyway, Draco Alazlam Malfoy or whatever kept breaking doors and windows in the castle and not even offering to repair them but his silver gel ball of Gundam 00 movie shenanigans got rekt because Kiritsugu is a player. Meanwhile, Kirei Kotomine fought off Iri and Maiya and kept going on about how they're women. Oh, Japan. Once Saber wrapped up her shenanigans with Bluebeard, she raced over to Iri who seemed to be mortally wounded -- but isn't. Oh good.

Waver Kissimmee Jacuzzi Splat Velvet rides his noble Jet Black steed into Bluebeard's lair and finds a bunch of dead children. WKJSV vomits profusely.

Loving this show

Don't be alarmed, pyre. I wouldn't be surprised if the dialogue is objectively superior in the sub, but I probably wouldn't be enjoying this as much if it weren't for the over-the-top dialogue I am presently experiencing. Maybe someday I'll watch the sub on a rewatch.

Five episodes down in Fate/Zero. I started it last night and blasted through three episodes (four if we want to go by runtime because the first was totally two episodes in length) and then blasted through another pair before work today.

Good show so far. I am having the damnedest time remembering the names of the various Masters but Leon is a gem and I threw him archetypal descriptions so he could toss back the real names. The following is edited for content in order to make me look a touch wittier at his expense:

Priest Guy Who Is Chairman-esque Guy's Son and "Sacrificed" Assassin
Kirei Kotomine

Magekiller Guy Who Is Involved With Silver-Haired Gal And Has A Raven-Haired Assistant
Kiritsugu Emiya

Silver-Haired Gal
Irisviel Einsbern
Usually just called "Iri"

Saji Crossroad
Waver Velvet

Johnny Yong PSYCHO Persona 4 Adachi 2.0
Ryunosuke Uryu

Sympathetic Ringworm Lad
Kariya Matou

Stylish Wine-Drinking Nobleman a.k.a. Miles Edgeworth
Tokiomi Tohsaka

We're going to play a game with this show. Whoever guesses my current favorite character accurately first will win a fabulous prize. The prize is respect.

The art is excellent. The action is amazing. The music is pretty good. A lot of the dialogue is, uh, you know, it's dubbed anime 101, but that just enriches the whole experience for me. The folks I'm splitting an apartment with right now, they've both seen the series already, and they're both kinda like, you know, "so the dialogue is not what you come here for", but I mean, look. I watch this and then The Crown and Handmaid's Tale. I am running the gamut here. I am running the gamut. Right? I love the refined elegance, I love the dryness or the acerbic wit, over yonder. But here? With Fate/Zero? I love the yelled cliche lines delivered with such compassion, conviction, furor. Voice acting is the best, innit?

I'll also make some BOLD PREDIX. I think Kirei or Kiritsugu are going to win. I think this may have upset Leon and I base this on him telling me near the end of his run that it was looking like whoever it was that he had hoped would win wasn't likely to win. I didn't get an answer on any of this and he hadn't actually completed the series yet at that point so no spoilers, ya? But we'll see. Ya, were see.

I have trouble buying into the open-world conceit that Aloy, an outsider harassed and tormented her entire life, would trust everyone she meets so willingly and do all their errands for them. I dislike a world that presents a technocratic dystopian future where the solution is, "well what if the technocratic hyper-rationalist was a woman." I hate that John Gonzalez has once again crafted a narrative inspired by indigenous peoples without understanding us, and responded to indigenous critics with an attitude of, " quiet, the adults are talking now."

but the dungeons were cool and so were the robot giraffes, 6/10
