I don't know how it is in other places, but in my county, the kids from several elementary schools graduate and go on to a unified middle school. So there's a lot of strangers meeting for the first time. That's probably the main reason. Also, the middle school and high school students ride the bus together. I'm guessing that's because some of the older high schoolers drive.
