Incidentally for Jojo, the part 3 and 4 manga are pretty much identical in length. I definitely believe SC would've been a substantially better show if they chopped out 9 episodes to make it the same length as DIU.

I certainly wouldn't say Maidragon was the funniest show of the year (even, say, Aho Girl made me laugh more), though it did have some pretty funny parts (mostly involving Riko/Kanna/Fafnir). But yeah, it was great at slice of life in general.

I very much disagree, but that's gonna vary person to person. I don't give a shit about Made in Abyss animation, but it sure has a vote for art. Vice versa for some people would be Land of the Lustrous, though I don't personally agree.

Yeah, which is why I'm saying a combination where you vote as you please would be ideal. It's fine to vote both for MIA due to its art and LotL for its animation in the same category. Just "best visuals" is best IMO.

Studio is hard to vote for. I watched around 40 shows that came out last year and that amounted to only three studios where I watched three or more anime from. I would need to watch way more than that if I want to avoid making my Studio of the Year nominations just a mirror of my Anime of the Year nominations.

I don't really have a problem with the Most Disappointing category. But I guess it's easy to say that when I haven't had any problems with the results.

You see I just don't think you should have to watch a bunch of shows from a studio to vote for them. I hate the idea of Best Studio being determined by volume, makes the award seem pointless. It should awarded based on some kind of triumph or advancement for the studio, not "oh well I liked 3 Shaft shows" or "BNHA was my #1 for the year so I guess Bones".

People can vote how they like there.

Well, uh, people can watch anime the way they want. I'm just saying that people waiting to watch anime until they finish didn't cost LotL the win is all.

As for art/animation: I think a lot of people voted based on animation anyway. Especially with LotL, the animation was a lot more impressive than the art there.

I think a lot of the "wait" people end up watching a good half dozen to a dozen less shows a year than they would have otherwise, under the guide of "well I am only gonna watch the best of the best".

Aha. Honestly, I could kinda see it being the opposite with MIA or LotL, since a fair number of people thought the early parts of those shows were the weakest (and might've dropped them if watching while airing). I still managed to watch 50 series from 2017...

Yeah the good guys are much more interesting. There's a good number of LN series with pretty weak villains, for whatever reason. SAO and Accel World, for example. Not a coincidence that the best SAO arc is the one that doesn't have a villain... Index is probably a little better, though most of the best villains it has become good eventually. The city mayor guy is by far the lamest and is the closest the city has to a big bad, sadly.

Personally I think having best art/animation is a good category compromise since people usually don't judge just one or the other. I'd be perfectly happy with the voting format changing.

Made in Abyss is considered the obvious win just about everywhere else, so color me surprised, lol. Literally was not even considering the possibility of Titan.

From the looks of it, the author made a spin-off manga with the three girls, and they're splicing content from that into the show.

Oh, that makes a little bit of sense, though apparently the spinoff is considered much worse than Takagi-san.

Haha @SaveEstelle, I've been thinking Lorca will die by the end of the first season from the start, so we'll have to see how long he holds out for. Hopefully longer than next episode at least, since I enjoy him quite a lot!

Rest of the episode was fun too. I thought Georgiou was kinda boring at first, but she had good development as the episode went on. And I very much liked the Stametz parts, though I like everything with the mycelial network.

My god, that ending. The last few chapters. Super sad that the anime didn't adapt all that, since while the last episode was my favorite part of the anime, this was even better than that. Just amazing. Exactly what I was hoping for when I first heard about the series. Even some awesome character development for Yuuri! Perfection.

Kizu is by far my least favorite part of Monogatari, so there's not much comparison there (though movie 3 at least was good).

Yeah you're probably right about that.

Think I forgot to mention it, but I finished Yuki Yuna Is A Hero S2 as well. This was...mostly good, but there were a few things I wasn't as into. I don't think the slice of life parts in either YY series were as good as those in Washio Sumi, and even those weren't a huge highlight (they just weren't a detractor like in YY). The direction it went in episode 12 was kind of lame and then episode 13 was, once again, far too happy of an ending. I feel like a lot of these modern dark magical girl shows really suck at pulling off endings. Usually they're incredibly contrived and feel way more happy than the show should be considering what came before. Even Madoka's ending was kind of overly happy, but at least it had some consequences. Daybreak Illusion's ending was shitty too. Oddly enough, Magical Girl Raising Project has the best ending of all these series, despite being the worst show in general. Whoda thunk that not having copouts would be a good thing? The show probably could've used more action in general too. Yuna herself was the highlight here. Her dilemma throughout the show was portrayed extremely well. I enjoyed this part a lot.

Also watched Devilman Crybaby. Seemed like a pretty fantastic adaptation of the manga to me, and I loved the manga to begin with! It's nice how much better it treated the female characters. The rappers were a fantastic addition too. I thought the animation and music were fantastic as well, so pretty much every element of the series was perfect, IMO. They even managed to make it a little more coherent than the manga, which could be kind of all over the place (not that that was a big problem, IMO). It's pretty awesome when one of your favorite series gets such a perfect adaptation!

Managed to go to the first Heaven's Feel movie in theaters! It was excellent. It wasn't exactly adapting the best part of the route, but it managed to be exciting from start to finish anyway. The changes they made mostly seemed to be for the best (I'd heard they cut some of Ilya's parts, but the end seemed to be implying that they're just focusing more on her in the next movie...?). The action scenes were fantastic as expected, and all the character interactions seemed to be Fate at its best. I feel like they cut out the best part of the Rin rooftop scene though, which is pretty sad, since that got the biggest laugh in the VN for me. Very much looking forward to the latter two parts (I liked this more than any 2017 movie I saw, incidentally <_<).

7 episodes down of Devilman and I still don't really understand what they're doing with the direction. The escalation of things is cool but like....they jump around so much with stuff.

The original manga jumped around even more.

The nonconsensuality of Citrus amuses me, but it's no big deal. The first episode with the guy was the only part that actually annoyed me, and that was a short-term issue.
