TopicAnyone want to talk about the broader strokes of Identity Politics?
Glass_Phantom

It's something I've been thinking about a lot lately...

Consider religion. Religion can be sweet and ennobling when it's about being in awe of God. But way too often, it's about being in awe of one's identity, and one's tribe, one's ego. If religion is making you more hateful, then you're not really worshiping God; you're worshiping yourself.

IMO, this is something atheists misunderstand about religion... Around here, it's considered sport to attack religions like Christianity and Islam by cherry-picking verses or backwards traditions (circumcision, head scarves, etc...) But the truth is, those verses, those traditions, aren't what turn religious people into bloodthirsty zealots. Religion can be about theology, spirituality, morality, culture, social institutions, and also, identity... It's identity that's the most dangerous of the lot. That's the one that really drives people to oppress; to kill.

Example: Why did so many young Muslims leave middle class homes in the West and travel to Syria to fight for ISIS? They didn't do it in search of theology, spirituality, morality, but in search of identity... They felt alienated, cut-off from their identity, and in many cases emasculated. So they went to Syria for a chance to play at being holy warriors and forge a new identity for themselves. It wasn't religion that called them... It was identity. What propped up ISIS was basically a juiced-up form of identity politics.

The religious posturing of extremists, be they Islamists or Evangelicals or Hindutva, is more about identity than religious sincerity.

It's the same thing with our politics... The issues themselves, things like abortion, healthcare, taxes, are not even responsible for half the divisions in our country. What divides us more is that politics has become a form of identity politics: individuals are now incorporating associations like "I'm a Democrat" or "I'm a Republican" into their core identity. It's not about enacting policies that are best for the country; it's about scoring a "win" for your team. Then you have posters like Proudclad, who's basically 70% of the way to becoming a political liberal, so much that he's twisted his conservative ideal to include socialist concepts like universal basic income. But will he give up the ghost? No... And why? Because he's decorated his self-identity with ornaments like "Republican," "pro-corporate," "pro-free market," "anti-regulation," "anti-big government."

What is it that drives atheists to attack religion (and religious people) whole cloth? In many cases, they have valid criticisms of religion and its place in our society. But just as frequently, it's because they've expanded their identity to include being anti-Christianity, anti-Islam, or anti-religion in general. In a lot of cases, they've experienced religious persecution... And persecution on the basis of identity further strengthens that identity.

Just some thoughts that have been bouncing around my head lately... G.P.

wrong as always

capitalism is why renewable energy is advancing at the rapid pace it currently has. solar is by far the cheapest form of energy now, even after removing subsidies. the pace of innovation in renewables and efficient transportation is unparalleled.

capitalism is the fairest system and promises the most gain for the greatest number of people

You only responded to the first thing I mentioned. Even so, it's moot, because crushing damage has already been dealt to the ecosystem on account of capitalism, which the further development of green tech will not be able to remedy.

Do you pay any attention to metrics? While the sheep were celebrating the 5 wins in special elections the Republicans had this year, the people with actual political knowledge were looking at how 5 districts that should have been 20 point landslides became tight races with relatively no name democrats putting up a heavy fight against the incumbents.

This. When Republicans are barely scraping by in R+30 districts (and losing in others, like AL-Senate and VA-Governor), the GOP is in for a world of hurt. Democrats are up by 15 on the generic ballot, which portends a bloodbath this November.

What's holding the Middle East back is not Islam, but dictatorship... The region's worst problems emanate from Riyadh and Tehran, not the Qur'an. Democracy and freedom are withheld from the people, and religious fundamentalism substituted to be wielded as a dictators' cudgel to keep the masses in line.

The demonstrations in Iran are evidence that dictatorship in the Middle East is unsustainable and unstable. The present system won't last; the way to the past is impossible; the road to the future is blocked. Something has to give. Unfortunately, America has no shortage of imperialists who believe dictatorship is fine if it means catering to "American interests," and even more disciples of the alt-right who think Islam is incongruous with democracy, and what Muslims need is an overlord to crack the whip. The reality is, in nations where dictators have accommodated demonstrations like this, we've seen a flourishing of democracy (Tunisia); only in countries where dictators reacted violently have we seen terrorism, civil war, and destruction (Libya, Syria).

Peace won't come to the Middle East until the dictators who rule give the people the freedom and human rights they deserve.

San Andreas had a lot going on with its storyline. There was a well-crafted parallel between Mike Toreno (government agent operating in a morally-gray area, "trying to set bad people on other bad people," committing heinous acts in the name of the self-perceived greater good -- namely the maintenance of the American socioeconomic system and the survival of the free world) and Officer Tenpenny (corrupt police officer setting gangs on other gangs, "doing what needs to be done to keep the hood under control, even if it means getting his hands dirty" and skimming off the top.)

The game was as much a critique of American imperialism as it was a critique of law enforcement and street gangs in America circa the early 1990s... one served as a foil for the other.

The message of the game is unabashedly anti-drug. Nothing wrong with that... Grove Street cared about their neighborhood. That's not a plot hole, that's just how they ran their territory.

Swagnificent119 posted...
-Why was the government directly helping Smoke and why were they so cool with CJ fucking up their plans?

The government wasn't directly helping smoke, iirc... Tenpenny was the one helping Smoke. Mike Toreno was only associated with Smoke's outfit vis-a-vis his agency's efforts to smuggle drugs into the United States, which is an allusion to how the CIA facilitated the import of crack cocaine into the United States in the 1980s as part of America's support for the Contras in Nicaragua.

We can only hope that the situation resolves itself amicably, without bloodshed, and that the people of Iran enjoy a rebirth of freedom... That the shackles are finally lifted from them, and their government implements democratic reforms. The people there yearn for freedom.

The true Western enemies of what's happening in Iran right now are those on the right, especially the alt-right, who believe that Middle Eastern race/culture/religion are incompatible with democracy, and therefore they need a dictator to "keep their passions in check..." I think Democrats and neoconservatives are mostly in agreement that that's a disgusting line of thinking, and we're pretty much all on the side of the protestors.

He orders him to "crawl forward with his hands in the air," which would probably baffle more than a few sober people, since we learn from the time we're infants that crawling = hands on the ground... Additionally, since he's drunk, he's more prone to lose his balance and make wild movements, which is exactly what happens.

There wasn't even anything to stop the officers from handcuffing him when he was on the floor...

Not to belabor the point too much, but transphobia is not a solved problem in our country, nor in any country... Several of these people died in gruesome way.. Ally Lee Steinfeld was a Missouri teenager who was attacked by her girlfriend and two men, stabbed dozens of times in the genitals, had her eyes gouged out, was dismembered, burned, and her bones were dumped in a garbage bin beside the chicken coop. Sherell Faulkner died of trauma from injuries she received last November in North Carolina, a state which doesn't have protections for LGBTQ in their hate crime laws... Kenne McFadden's head was held underwater until she drowned, and her assailants just dumped her body in the river.

Too many people dying senselessly, for no reason at all... The world needs more love and tolerance in it and a lot less hate.

A search of TideFans.com reveals that BamainBoston often opined on controversial issues, including race, abortion, perceived federal overreach, and Southern heritage. In one post from February 2011, he defended the honor of the early Ku Klux Klan.

That morning at 9:17 a.m., a user with the handle Bamaro posted a story about a Mississippi proposal to honor Nathan Bedford Forrest by placing his image on a license plate. Who comes up with these ideas? the user asked. Honor someone who served as the first KKK Grand Wizard.

BamainBoston responded an hour later:

Heaven forbid we let the facts get in the way of your righteous indignation, but Forrest, when he decommissioned his men, told them to make peace with the men they had fought and live as good citizens of the United States. It was only after the perceived depredations of the Union army during reconstruction that Forrest joined (it is highly unlikely that he founded or acted as the Grand Wizard) the first KKK, which was entirely different than the KKK of the early 19th Century. When the Klan turned to racial violence, he distanced himself from the organization as he had long supported the reconciliation of the races. In fact, he often spoke to black organizations.

First, he omits the 1864 Fort Pillow massacre, when Forrest led his troops to a mass slaughter of black soldiers. It is unclear whether Forrest explicitly permitted the indiscriminate killing, but he later celebrated it, declaring his hope that these facts will demonstrate to the Northern people that negro soldiers cannot cope with Southerners.

Second, the allegation that the first KKK was entirely different from that of the early 19th Century does not withstand scrutiny... From its inception, the KKK promoted white supremacy and opposed federal efforts to protect the civil rights of freed blacks. The group employed intimidation and violence, including murder, to thwart Reconstruction...

Contrary to BamainBostons assertion, Forrest did likely serve as the KKKs first leader, or Grand Wizard...

BamainBostons account, then, whitewashes the reality that Forrests leadership of the Klan coincided with its early forays into racial violence. It also falsely differentiates the first KKK from its later iteration, perpetuating a pernicious myth that the nascent Klan was noble and benevolent.
