I think the hotdrop gun scramble problem can be solved via either guaranteed gun spawn locations (ideally marked on the minimap) in really hot drops or shorter load times overall (so dying to bad rng doesn't result in a 2 minute wait).

I agree that dropping smart can help mitigate this but I've seen players much much better than all of us get completely screwed due to gun rng in a team setting. If you hotdrop an area and 3/4ths of your squad don't get a gun despite all landing near high spawn location houses in hacienda, losing feels far more about RNG than anything else.

Maybe using some sort of ML algorithm to bias the spawn distribution would help (e.g. analyze how many players die without a gun and adjusting the distribution until that player count is minimized, while also attempting to maximize the number of firefights)

Chaos;child is a pretty great VN from what I've heard but the anime isn't as good and obviously spoils the plot.

I don't know if you've played Gahkthun of Golden Lightning but that's on steam and I think it's pretty fun, especially if you've played Sharnoth or Inganock already. It's much better than those two.

MariaTaylor posted...
I might get eviscerated for this but my understanding is that turbulence is when you have a flow rate that changes over time in a way that can't be predicted by the model. so rather than thinking of turbulence as a thing, I just think of turbulence as a code word for 'we can't predict the behavior of this system.'

Alright alright I'll admit I wouldn't have posted here if it wasn't for this.

It's not technically speaking incorrect but the theory of turbulence is actually much richer than "we can't predict the behavior of this system". Turbulence is basically like the universe trolling physicists.

For example, the 2d equivalent of fluid flow (which can be used to approximately model the atmosphere) doesn't actually have turbulent flow. If you have any "disruption" in the fluid it quickly "dies out" and doesn't build up. But for three dimensional flows...

Big whirls have little whirls,
That feed on their velocity;
And little whirls have lesser whirls,
And so on to viscosity.

is a little ditty that a meteorologist named Lewis Fry Richardson made up to encapsulate this phenomenon.

This is caused by the interaction between a dissipation term (aka why wakes from boats don't just persist + go on forever) and the convection term (aka how things flow), which individually are tractable but when you put them both in an equation screw things up.

What really sucks is that, even knowing that smaller/slower/more viscous things cause bigger/faster/more slippery to exist gives us non-zero information about how fluids behave, but the thing is that how the larger scale whirls interact can also cause the smaller scale whirls to die out / grow and vice versa. But we can still make some (weak) statements about the structure of turbulent flow. A Russian physicist actually modeled turbulence as a completely fractal/self similar structure and got an answer for "what is the frequency of the whirls at a given size) that matched pretty close to reality!

But yeah, turbulence is frustrating because it's non-existant in a lower number of dimensions, it's composed of two terms, that on their own are pretty easy to solve and it has barely enough structure to make you think that you know something about it then says "lol no not even close kiddo."

Also re: LoL thing. Yes, you do better in LoL but the improvement is so noisy plus... I guess incidental that I don't feel accomplished even if I do improve.

A lot of LoL's learning is literally just "what can my character do and what can the other 100+ characters do", then some subset of them you know about counters+synergies (which can change out from under you as you change in skill level! You don't need to worry about persistent counterjungling at low levels for example). I don't derive particular joy from knowing "oh their Q is strong" whereas getting bodied by something then figuring out that it's because I left too long of a gap in my """blockstring""" it feels like I'm learning about my mental blindspots rather than "oh I didn't figure out this particular bit of arcane interaction".

Not to say that fighting games don't have dumb mechanics interactions, but they have far less, and even if they do have mechanics interactions, I can reasonably expect them to pop up within the next 10 hours of playing the game.

I've played Starcraft online maybe once, have never played CS:GO at all, and I don't play Melee competitively. The APM required for Starcraft is extremely high, CS:GO players need to have the twitch reactions of a god, and Melee players press buttons so fast and so often that a lot of people in the pro scene are ruining their hands. If you have better suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Not quite! At sufficiently high levels of skill in CS:GO, pre-aiming, aka doing equilibrium style crap by statistically thinking where people are, sometimes beats reflexes.

You do need good reactions, but one of the first things emphasized to get out of the n00b doldrums is crosshair placement (then spray control, then grenade placement then spotting, THEN and ONLY then, flick shots, order might be wrong but flick shots are pretty low in terms of risk/return). Everyone thinks of flick shots / links to flick shots when it comes to CS, but that's precisely because it's a (relatively) rare and not very used skill, since needing to flick necessitates that your opponent has outpositioned your crosshair, or that you needed to take an aimduel instead of getting an easy kill on a flashed opponent.

I'm not saying they're similar but it's kinda presumptuous to assume they're not. I doubt a lot of studies have been done on this kinda thing yet.

Read this topic and had a cool thought for a mathematical model to help quantify if FGO should be more generous here.

I think I can basically guess what the current revenue distribution of FGO is by doing a really ghetto curve fit of a generalized pareto distribution by looking at the download anniversaries against, let's say, news stories of some idiot stealing a credit card and spending like 10k on trying to NP5 someone. Then, use updated rates (like 3%) see how much money the guy would have spent instead in the world with the increased rate, use that rederive the parameters fro the distribution and see if the revenue is higher or not.

This would only work assuming that everyone only cared about 5* banner rate ups, but I bet I can partially see if the 4* rate up thing would help by... dunno, assuming there's some linear combination of 4* mongers and 5* mongers and seeing how changing the relative weights would affect total revenue.

There's basically two phases to (physics) graduate school, I only got through the first and had some taste of the second.

The first phase was basically just "undergrad, but harder because you also had to teach+grade and had to take this balls hard exam in a year". This will probably vary for whatever school-major pairing you can think of, but the common thread is to "do the bare minimum for classes to stay in the program", because the grades are not important and you should be primarily taking classes that are useful for research or passing whatever qualification exams your school has (if there are any). Personally speaking I'd rate this as actually about equal to undergrad because while you oftentimes have less support (e.g. profs teaching usually don't need your approval to get tenure, TAs are more overworked etc.) and more obligations, but you're still in the same mode of undergrad studying.

The second phase is "you have essentially an infinite amount of time to conduct research" which, yeah there's been a ton of stuff written about this by other phd students about how soul draining this can be if you don't have the right circumstances. The difficulty of this phase is almost entirely dictated by how devoted you are to your subject (I'd say you'd have to be in the top 1-2% of devotion among grad students to have an easy time, and yes that's literal) and who you pick as your PI. I think I picked a pretty good PI but had a really hard time finding stuff to do since I was thinking about going into industry near the tail end of this phase.

Can't really say much if you want to write a thesis for a phd. The school I went to pretty much just rewards a masters to anyone who finishes the first year of graduate school, which I think is pretty forgiving if you ignore the fact that the first year of physics grad school is the most grueling due to adjustment.

Overall, I don't think much of the specifics are relevant unless you go to a similar school in the same major as I did, but that the research phase being harder and extremely demotivating seems to be a universal among all grad students I've talked to.

No personal experience, but DT1 is considered not "great" by the creator because he was still learning the ropes with Game maker, and DT2 was fairly short and also suffers from developer inexperience.

The developer actually says not to play them for those reasons and there's a story summary of the first two games in the opening menu screen.

Distorted travesty 3 is a pretty fun (and free1) amateur made game where you travel to different gates which introduce mechanics + weapons from various old platformers like mario, zelda ii and castlevania. It's a really big and expansive game (I hear it takes around 80 or so hours to finish it on your first playthrough) It's kinda hard but in a non-frustrating way since it introduces its mechanics pretty slowly, but from what I understand you're doing pretty crazy stuff by the end of the game in order to beat the last boss.
