Zelda 2 is a game from the era when developers realized they could get another twenty bucks out of kids' parents for the game guide and it's pretty much designed around the assumption that you have one. Too many completely random things you have to do to progress. Using the Spell spell in a random location to make a dungeon rise from the ground comes to mind. There's just no way to figure something like that out.
