The religious police (the muttawa) are not under the Crown Prince's control, however. Since the muttawa are the ones who carry out the arrests and executions for religious crimes, the power to influence them lies elsewhere. Considering recent developments, this is likely another cosmetic bandage added to the existing pile. For example, allowing women to drive is great and all, but they didn't address the capital offenses that the western world (and its own citizens) abhor. Saudi Arabia is simply deflecting from big issues by trying to verbally appease the western criticism. --- Make America great again! |
