Militia in the second amendment has already been confirmed to mean every able bodied male aged 49 or less, the Supreme Court has already ruled on this. And then the meaning was expanded to include women and people over 50. You are not as clever as you think you are.

If guns were only used in defence of the innocent, I suspect that everyone, or nearly everyone, would support them.

Anything and everything can be misused for the wrong reason. Restricting one's fundamental right to defend themselves is moronic and twisted, especially when you consider guns are often the only option with an efficacy for some people.

In fact, guns are used far, far more often for criminal means than for self-defence.

This is a horseshit statement and you know it. Guns deter millions of crimes every year, but that deterrence can't be packaged up into a neat little misleading statistic so you sit there and pretend that they don't.

I don't know of anywhere where defending yourself is illegal and I'd love to see your source on this proving it isn't just ignorant scaremongering.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/9516776/Farm-tenant-arrested-after-burglars-shot-was-plagued-by-break-ins.html

Literally the first two google search options.

So are guns, really. Honestly, they're a terrible tool for self defence for several different reasons.

They're not unless you don't train yourself to use them. Tasers and pepper spray fail all the fucking time because there are far too many variables that can hinder their efficacy in comparison to a gun. Lesser weapons, such as baseball bats or knives, can have their efficacy reduced to zero in the event of multiple attackers or an assailant physically outmatching you. Guns, at worst, put you on equal ground with an attacker.

Your wife is more likely to survive by running away than she is by pulling a gun

That's really not a better option than shooting a criminal. How high do you have to be to think it is?

REGULATED. The Republican spook word is in the constitution.

At the time of the drafting of the 2nd Amendment, Well Regulated meant properly maintained, updated and trained. It did not mean the modern "regulated" term associated with endless bureaucratic bullshit. Republicans actually know this though, which is why that part doesn't concern them.

Literally anything that belongs to them?

Could they not defend themselves with a taser instead?

Tasers are extremely unreliable.

How do the people of Canada, UK, France, Spain, Australia, Russia, Austria, Germany, South Korea all defend their property without guns?

They don't. In fact, many of them face legal punishments for defending themselves or their property, which is so absurd that it's hard to believe it actually happened.

SinisterSlay posted...
We have this really neat 20th century device, it's called a phone. You dial a 9, then a 1, then another 1, and a person will speak to you on the line. They will ask you what your emergency is. Just tell them, then they come and take care of the problem. I admit it feels strange, hoping a government paid employee will actually do their job and protect you. But it's typically better to leave the protecting people to the trained professionals rather than to the gun nuts that frankly could never manage to pull their weapon out in time and defend themselves without risk of hurting others?

Are you fucking delusional? Do you think cops instantly teleport into your house between you and an attacker the second you finish dialing 911? You could literally be raped and murdered long before police show up to assist you. Average police response time is something like 12 minutes, which is an eternity when you are facing down an attacker.

Why does the concept of people being self-reliant scare you so much? Why does the thought of someone not leaving their lives in the hands of slow-acting government officials who have no legal obligation to protect them bother you so much?

Shockingly, taking a vengeful and overly simplistic "punish them, for they have wronged" stance without actually bothering to address the issues that created the criminal behaviour in the first place does strikingly little to reduce crime.

Shockingly, when you create a tremendous logjam to protect the rights of criminals, the entire system goes to shit because you do things like house child rapists and murderers for 50+ years instead of doing the intelligent thing and removing them from society. Also shockingly, if you bribe criminals by handing them every form of welfare possible after they've gotten done ruining the lives of innocent people, they're less likely to return to crime because why bother when the government will rob your victims for you to pay for you to not rob them. And of course, even if you do, the government will be there for you.

The punishment system can't work if you don't utilize a punishment that stops people from committing more crimes.

It seems logical to me. The guy who robbed a gas station because he couldn't afford to feed his family is going to be easier to rehabilitate and reform than the guy who robbed a gas station because he was shaking down the business on behalf of a local gang; he should be treated accordingly.

It's funny that people still think that people do things like rob gas stations to feed their family. 99 times out of 100 it's a drug user robbing a place to buy drugs or to get out of debt they have for dealing drugs and getting busted. And the reason behind a crime shouldn't matter because there's no excuse for threatening the lives and well-being of law abiding citizens. It's tremendously easy to go through life and not do things like rob people or break into homes, but for some reason people love to treat the criminal as the victim and the victim as heartless for wanting justice. The overwhelming majority of criminals fuck up their own lives with their own shit choices, it's

The US is absolutely operating on a punishment-based system

It really isn't though, and I say that as someone who works for the US DoJ. I cannot understate how many chances people are given to "get their life straight" before things like even minor prison sentences get put on the table. The US justice system is in shambles because most career criminals realize that they can commit crimes for years and years while getting slaps on the wrist, go to a prison with another slap-on-the-wrist sentence after years of felonies, get out of prison early and continue to commit crimes. There's almost no incentive for most criminals to do anything different and worst of all we decide that paying for food, shelter, medical care and entertainment is the best course of action for our worst criminals. I sure am looking forward to being on the hook for that Californian couple in the news lately, even though there's literally zero reason to keep them around. The idea that everyone can be reformed or rehabilitated is so moronically naive that it's slowly killing us.

The analogy isn't perfect. Getting off a property is simple; going to a foreign country you have no ties to is both expensive (sometimes prohibitively so) and often requires a specific skillset (usually linguistic) that the person may or may not have.

The analogy isn't perfect, but rewarding criminal behavior is not a good option.

In most areas of the world, forcing someone outside in dangerously cold temperatures is grounds for a negligent homicide charge

Thank god my country isn't enough of a shithole to force you to harbor criminals in your home then.

most people recognize the primacy of human life

Except for, ironically, the criminals that you cry crocodile tears for. They simply cannot get enough of ruining lives and violating rights. It really is good that we have people like you fighting to help out the worst humanity has to offer.

If it were as cut-and-dry as you're painting it, the whole thing would have been sorted out years ago.

There is essentially no such thing as a cut-and-dry issue because people like you want to fellate criminals and treat them like poor lost children instead of the selfish thugs that they really are.

But saying you should punish those people by deporting their kids is flagrantly wrong on ethical, moral, and legal levels.

It's not at all though, especially considering they are still here illegally. Stop rewarding criminals.

Ah, the favorite talking point of people who are clueless about macro-economics. The meme of "they do the jobs that we don't want to!" only persists because the presence of illegal workers has wrecked entire industries, making them unsuitable for average people because of wage depression and allowance of horrible working conditions. This dramatically increases competition for workers in industries that don't use illegals, driving down wages and working conditions there as well.

A criminal who can point to extenuating circumstances will typically receive a lesser punishment than one who committed crimes simply because they felt like it.

Which is a ridiculous thing to do and has resulted in perpetual abuse of the system. Rather than seeking to protect the innocent and punish those who do bad, we've shifted to a system where giving people who constantly seek to do bad and take from others get infinite chances to do so because they're the exact type of people who take advantage of the compassion that others show for them. This is worsened by the fact that just about all criminals have "extenuating circumstances" to use as an excuse.

They didn't break the law, though - they literally had no say in the matter.

Control is a necessary element of crime; if you are not in control of your actions, basic logic dictates that you cannot be guilty of a crime. As an example, if you were knocked unconscious and tossed into a restricted area, it is highly unlikely you would be charged with a crime because you did not willingly enter the area in question and could not reasonably have been expected to have undertaken any actions to prevent the crime from being committed.

While this is true, it doesn't mean that you wouldn't be removed from the premises. Another element of crime is continuance. Even if you didn't initially put yourself in a place you weren't supposed to be, remaining there once you know you aren't allowed is still a crime.

That's, in essence, what is at the heart of the Dreamer conundrum - the fact that these children, through no fault of their own, were smuggled into the country and, in many cases, lack the necessary skills (linguistic, cultural, etc.) to survive in their countries of origin, despite being perfectly capable of doing so here.

Not relevant. Let's say you and another person entered a home to avoid potentially freezing to death. You enter thinking the home belongs to the other person and have no intent to do anything but stay warm there. You then find out the other person has lied and you are both trespassing and the homeowner demands you leave. Do you get to stay in a place you have no right to be in because of the potential freezing temperatures? Should the homeowner be forced to accommodate you because you have no ill intent?

And one might reasonably ask what wrong is being righted by deporting a Dreamer who has not committed any crime?

Removing rewards for criminal behavior. A huge impetus behind illegal immigration is trying to improve lives for their families. Removing a huge motivating factor by punishing illegal families is critical. Many illegal parents rest easy knowing that there are shitloads of misguided advocacy groups for their children in the event that they get deported, which encourages them to illegally immigrate. The wrong being righted is law-abiding American citizens no longer being forced to accommodate people who have no business being here. Punishing families and removing birthright citizenship would do wonders to stem the tide of illegal immigration.

Pretty great hypothetical you've got going there. I particularly liked you throwing in buzzword insults designed to shame people into being okay with people breaking the law.

Basic morals and ethics tell us that things like rape and murder are wrong, but if you're going to demonize illegal immigrants, especially the Dreamers, strictly because of some written code, that's a lazy argument.

So basic morals tell us that rape and murder are wrong, but sneaking into places you're not allowed and demanding you be allowed to stay to is alright?

It's especially lazy when we have lawmakers trying to provide them legal protections...

It really isn't though. You have lawmakers excusing criminals in exchange for political favors(votes) to stay in power, all at the expense of your average law-abiding citizen. They're not humanitarians working towards the best interest of the common man. They are literally just taking a different form of bribe.

If you were renting a place and someone broke in, set up camp in one of your bedrooms, refused to leave and your landlord told you they were fine with it because the intruder is tossing them a little extra cash under the table while you get to foot the bill for the extra costs associated with the intruder, is that okay? That's essentially would you've said here.

Rewarding criminal behavior is never a good idea.

Considering the government's track record with handling money, I don't think anyone really thinks giving them more money will produce better results.

You sound personally offended by this.

I'm annoyed at the assertion, because poor blacks and hispanics cause way more problems than poor whites in pretty much every metric, but get a pass because they voted for the party that wants to ensure there are as many poor people as possible.

Most people who support Trump's tax plan saw their taxes decrease and weren't relying on the sham known as Obamacare for coverage anyway. And the tax bill doesn't hurt the poor, typically the poor hurt themselves far more than any tax bill can.

Absolutely. I'll be paying less in taxes and maybe, just maybe, we'll start to look at ways to reduce our spending instead of letting people breed and behave like animals.

Our system is tremendously overburdened because we collect criminals instead of getting rid of them. People get nearly nothing for doing heinous shit or being perpetual drains constantly.
