TopicIs there a form of racism that's not based on xenophobia?
TheGreatNoodles
01/22/18 10:11:02 PM
#11
Xenophobia is the intense fear, disliking and/or prejudice against people from other countries, whilst racism usually refers to a predisposed belief about someone/group based on their race (usually with beliefs of inferiority or superiority)

Therefore, if someone from Australia held the belief that anyone born in Australia (hypothetically lets just assume that's a blanket statement) was intrinsically and genetically inferior to say, people born in Japan, that's racist but not based upon xenophobia.

If... that makes sense?

Can't think of anything I buy that's even in a can, but if I was given two cans that were the exact same (price, type, etc) with the only difference being one is dented and the other isn't, I'd choose the not damaged one.

If they were all dented but I wanted to buy it, then I'd still buy it with just a little dint. If it looked caved in then no.

Easy.

x+(x+100)=110
X+100=110-X
X=10-X
2x=10
X=5

Thus, the ball is five cents.
Obviously the people who 'failed' probably picked 10 cents. But I doubt 50% failed.

Interesting change, but I feel like people who oppose it are going to purposely mass flag innocent name calling just to complicate the 'no name calling, period' part.

The mere mention of (potentially) illegal things no longer being instantly not allowed seems nice. Especially given it could be mentioned in a bad light when discussing topics (eg. A major flaw of the NES mini was its simplicity in being hacked, which most likely contributed to its short production span).

As for 'misgendering' I feel like this might create situations where someone has used 'he/she' multiple times before and was informed multiple times by the one user, but due to not really paying attention might continue without any malicious intent. Not everyone tracks topics, and I personally wouldn't remember if someone told me 'hey noodles, I prefer 'he/she' unless I were to tag such a thing. (Not very good at remembering usernames unless it's someone I see a lot or posts on a board I frequent a lot)

As I'm sure most people know, Australian classification laws are... strict and inconsistent (more so for games than movies).

The Matrix in Australia is only M (suggested 15+) according to the classification site (was going to say it can't be R, since it was shown at my school for studying purposes). I don't watch movies so don't know any 'tame' (or any) R movies, but R in Australia is 'enforced' 18+.

Regardless of whether that's good or bad (about the notes), I expect moderations will slow down now. Especially if the note needs to be written prior to deletion.

So I expect this overtime to either turn into short notes that don't explain much but can be copy pasted and reused, or be long notes that inadvertently give more room for people to try twisting what's said around. I'm sure most cases they'd be useful though.

Nope.

But I find it silly that even if one's feed is public, and you're on the same (private) community server as someone else with a public feed, the stuff both of you post is hidden from the feeds just because the board is private. I understand it'll be so much more mucking around to make it visible for people only with access to the board, but it just seems silly as is.

I think most people who hide their feed are either people worried about stalkers, or people who get regularly trolled (or the opposite modded) and don't want people appearing in every topic they make/post_in.

Being devil's advocate here, but language changes over time. Where once something has only one meaning and is incorrect, if used excessively wrong gains a new meaning that makes it correct.

Obviously in formal writing it'll be wrong.

This post isn't supporting or opposing singular 'they/them', just pointing out that language changes.

I mean, read old English stuff, that stuff was grammatically correct at the time but nowadays would be (arguably) wrong.

Where I'm from (small town), there's a word that was someone's last name that's now used to essentially mean ripoff or cheat someone (even back at school I heard teachers use it). If my town hypothetically was the whole world (or at least English speaking places), that word would then become proper usage (or at least 'acceptable' slang) if the majority of people used it that way.

I see people talking about the whole 'make stuff too expensive for minorities' scenario, but unless I'm misreading this what would the coffee shop have to do with that?

This is a gross oversimplification, but the gentrification of a neighbourhood tends to proceed as follows:

-Higher crime rates in an area cause businesses and higher-income people to move out
-Property values drop due to the lack of businesses, lower-income people concentrate in the area because of cheaper rent
-Cheaper rent attracts students and recent graduates, particularly arts ones (most of whom are going to be white, as opposed to the over-representation of minorities seen in regions of lower SES)
-Influx of higher-class (but still lower-income) residents dilutes the crime rate, such that small and niche businesses take advantage of the lower commercial rents to cater to the artsy hipster types that are flocking to the neighbourhood
-Niche businesses start attracting better-off artsy hipster types, which in turn brings more money into the area, which in turn attracts higher-value businesses, and so on
-Eventually, the neighbourhood becomes trendy enough to attract mainstream attention, at which point property values start increasing rapidly (though they will have started to increase when the businesses came back)
-Property values and business development stabilize at whatever equilibrium the neighbourhood's geography permits, and you have a fully-gentrified neighbourhood

Coffee shops fall somewhere in the cycle described in the fifth point, since they tend to appeal to artsy hipster types, but also tend to be pricey enough that they won't be supported by a lower-income neighbourhood. The coffee shop in question isn't single-handedly causing the process, by any means, and the process would proceed whether they were capitalizing on the development or not (somebody would fill that niche), but it can still claim to be part of it.

That surprisingly makes a lot of sense. O.o
So to clarify, the coffee shop, with their sign, is essentially stating their support to such practices? I can see how that'll cause offence (especially to lower income and/or minorities).

Well, gentrification has two meanings. One is to make something more appealing to middle class people and the other meaning is simply to make something more polished or refined.

If they meant the second meaning, it's essentially stating that they've been improving the coffee shop since 2014.

If they meant the first meaning, I don't see how that's 'offensive' unless they're telling people (or somehow showing?) that 'you're too low/high class for us, we're making this more appealing to middle class'.

From my experience as a non-coffee drinker (ergo I know practically nothing), most stuff in coffee shops is usually *cough* overpriced *cough* (granted you don't usually go to a coffee shop to get non-coffee related stuff), so trying to 'appeal more to middle class' sounds *to me* like trying to reduce prices. But as I said, I don't know much about coffee shops. XD

If they're referring to somehow making the 'neighbourhood' more appealing to middle class, I don't exactly see how that works unless they think 'more access to coffee' = 'more appealing to middle class'... which doesn't sound offensive to me?

Edit: I see people talking about the whole 'make stuff too expensive for minorities' scenario, but unless I'm misreading this what would the coffee shop have to do with that? Even if the coffee shop was making prices (somehow) high enough to still have business, but too high for minorities... coffee isn't exactly a must have thing and wouldn't result in minorities being unable to pay for their house/rent...

Since it's a forest, I'd hope to be able to tie them up onto trees or something and maybe eventually a hiker or someone will see them (presuming the balloons are still bright coloured and not just her whole head with no border).
