Though maybe it is my experience trying to get Japanese speakers to understand the difference between "see" and "she" that's influencing me, since all of those sounds independently exist in Japanese, but the pairing "see" does not and it's super hard for them to say.

...I don't have a good explanation (I'm not a linguist), but basically: The "Tsu" in "Tsunami" doesn't exist in most English words and isn't really a core English sound. Because of this, when most English speakers say "Tsunami," they pronounce it "Sunami"; and when learning a language where it is a sound like Japanese, they have to learn how to make the "tsu" sound by rote. Even once they've learned it, they will often still struggle to tell the difference between "su" and "tsu" for reasons that go into brain development (very basically: differentiating phonemes is something your brain learns at a very young age, is dependent on the sounds you hear growing up [i.e. your native tongue], and is extremely difficult to reteach. If you've ever met an Asian who has trouble distinguishing between 'l' and 'r', it's exactly the same reason).

For instance, Japanese speakers can clearly pronounce "Fa,"* yet that's pretty decisively not a Japanese sound. Again, I think you're fundamentally misunderstanding what I'm saying, which really is: if I'm supposed to identify a word as Asian, it should probably exist as a "natural" sound in an Asian language; and if we can not be pedantic for a second, we both agree "Zin" is not a "natural" sound in Mandarin.

*okay if we want to get super technical, the Japanese speaker is likely to use a slightly different 'F' sound than the one in English, but let's not and say we did.

Well, as you say, it would be a different sound in Mandarin as in English. As you allude to, "Zin" is not a Mandarin syllable; while "Zi" is, were I to spell it phonetically, I would go with "Dzu" -- which is not how an English speaker is going to approach "Zin."
