You'll get used to it. My only tip is to start out simple. Go with simple cel-shading and what not before you try out other visual effects.

Special effects can either enhance the good or bad points of a drawing.

for some reason I find cross-hatching a lot easier than pure black shading. I've tried pure black before when I was trying to achieve a noir-ish look and found it hard to make it look right.

Well technically hard shading is less work than crosshatching. Use whatever you fell works.

Try practicing with hard shading first (not crosshatching and stuff). Where you use complete blacks to separate shadow and light. This'll help you visualize a 3D model a bit better and how light affects it.

See how this image mostly only used pure blacks as shading? After that you can change it up by replacing the pure black shadows with line scratching/crosshatching to create gradient lighting. It's just the same as how people learning shading colored drawings start with cel-shading before moving on to more complex stuff.

I hate drawing details, especially ones that I need reference for (like armor), so the armor was kinda random. And tried to draw a bit of perspective thing but didn't turn out quite right.

The thing is, I know I should tackle challenges like this with references and tutorials at first, but I'm just too lazy, oh well. I still like how it turned out.

Just draw every day and it'll work itself out.
