Probably should let them know Trump ain't gonna get rid of his own tax cuts, and most of the middle class tax cuts will just expire or get rolled back naturally without anyone having to cut them.

And also Republicans still have like a 30 something seat majority in the house.

And this dude is going to be out of office in like six months anyway.

Other way around I think

Tortureman would've won without the Trump endorsement. People are really tired of El Trumpo.

I disagree with this though. Trump is still above water in that district. That's literally his base-iest of base areas. I definitely think he helped and at least kept it close.

Corrik is right about it being "ultimately meaningless" though and Trump wasn't smart to tie his name to another losing candidate, particularly when that district is getting completely reworked in six months time. But I do think his name absolutely helped there.

Looks like the spin from the GOP this morning is that Lamb is actually conservative, so they didn't really lose.

ok!

A conservative who had the backing of the unions, LGBTQ groups, is legislatively pro-choice, favors universal background checks, affirmatively defends Obamacare, and ran explicitly against the GOP tax cut

He was basically just "personally against abortion but doesn't want laws restricting it" (which is totally reasonable and literally the same position as SUPER LIBERAL BOOGEYMAN Tim Kaine) and against stronger gun legislation (although he was ok with expanded background checks, which again, cool beans man).

Yeah he's a conservative democrat and he's perfect for a Trump +20 district (and a Romney/McCain +15 district). But he's still a democrat.

Not sure if we are still waiting on absentees or not but with the 2 precincts reporting, lamb is up 550 votes.

Washington county and Greene county. Would be pretty unlikely for them to make up that manu votes, they have around 2k combined.

Lamb looks like the winner, but there will be a recount.

Is it Greene's absentees we're waiting on? I thought it was Washington and Westmoreland.

Those two would give Saccome an expected boost of 353 votes.

EDIT: If it is Greene it'd be like 40 less than that. This is assuming the same voting percentage as the general population of the county which isn't a guarantee obviously.

Allegheny absentee ballots weren't as one sided as people thought I guess to only get the lead up to 800.

Well he was up by 95 and then went up to 847. So he gained 752 votes on the absentees from Allegheny and Greene. Greene had 203 absentee votes, and if we assume a similar distribution from their standard voting, Saccome got 117 of those and Lamb got 84. So Saccome got an additional 33 votes, for this group, meaning Allegheny gave Lamb a 785 vote swing.

There were 3,750 votes from Allegheny, meaning the rough votes from them were roughly 2,267 for Lamb and 1,482 for Saccone.

Or roughly 60.45% for Lamb and 39.5% for Saccone, which is slightly better than the normal votes from Allegheny (57.2 to 42.2).

So yeah, definitely good, but not overwhelmingly so.

I am really surprised for the supposed blue wave that a candidate as bad as saccone could maybe even pull this off.

Well yes, this is also true. Its crazy inconsequential in the long run.

But its a Trump +20 district right in core Trump country. Even with a good dem candidate (which we have) and a bad rep one (which we have) its a tough district for dems.

Thad Cochran, Senator from Mississippi, is resigning effective April 1st.

Mississippi Republican Sen. Thad Cochran, who chairs the powerful Appropriations Committee, will leave his seat effective April 1, citing his health issues that have kept him away from the Senate in recent months.

"I regret my health has become an ongoing challenge," Cochran said in a statement. "I intend to fulfill my responsibilities and commitments to the people of Mississippi and the Senate through the completion of the 2018 appropriations cycle, after which I will formally retire from the U.S. Senate."

The 80-year-old's health declined in the last few years and he is currently serving his seventh term in the Senate. He was absent from his duties in the Senate for a few weeks last fall with a urinary tract infection.

Longtime Senate aides, who observed Cochran regularly, noted privately that the senator seemed to have slowed down mentally in recent years but they acknowledge it's difficult to tell to what degree.

Doesn't sound too good for him, sadly.

BUSINESS INSIDER - Tillerson and Mattis are reportedly trying to hold Trump back from striking North Korea

Both The Telegraph and The Wall Street Journal have portrayed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Secretary of Defense James Mattis as trying to caution President Donald Trump against a strike, and the national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, as advocating it.

The reports come after months of mixed messages and dozens of shifts in the US's stance on North Korea.

The bloody-nose strategy, which calls for a sharp, violent response to some North Korean provocation, puts a lot of weight on the US's properly calibrating an attack on North Korea and Pyongyang's reading the limited strike as anything other than the opening salvo of an all-out war.

http://www.businessinsider.com/tillerson-mattis-trump-north-korea-strike-2018-1

For those worried about America picking fights with North Korea, prepping McMaster to be replaced could be a good thing.

I was honestly wondering why the reports were saying that Mattis and Kelly were the ones pushing for his removal. This makes a lot of sense with this context, thanks.

FWIW Manchin was just on Fox News talking up the bill and singing Trump's praises for helping them get something done. He essentially wants it the same bill as the 2013 Manchin/Toomey bill but is much more optimistic about it passing this time if it has Trump's support.

He is definitely one of the most conservative Democrats on gun control, although there are a couple of others that aren't for sure guarantees either. So maybe he will have almost all of the Democratic votes on this depending on what the final bill looks like.

I'm still not super optimistic based on recent (and not so recent) history though.

Imagine the possible stories if teachers suddenly carry weapons.

"WHY DIDN'T THE TEACHER STOP THE SHOOTER?" asks NRA Vice President Wayne La Pierre. "THEY WERE COWARDS!"

We're already hearing this one regarding the school resource officer. Don't think we won't be hearing the same story when a teacher with a gun fails to stop it. Followed of course by everyone calling for the firing of all the armed teachers who didn't stop it.

"Teacher goes nuts, kills students, then self."

Guess it's time to ban something finally! Schools, that is.

"Student grabs gun from teacher, kills 3."

At least it wasn't 17 this time!

"Teacher kills fellow teacher mistaking them for the shooter."

Hey! Mistakes happen.

"SWAT team kills teacher, mistaking them for the shooter."

Swat team feared for their lives.

Don't forget the inevitable "He reached for his waistband" after a teacher kills an unarmed student and then claims he was afraid for his life.

Cops, who are trained for years and are prepared to actual handle dangerous situations, make these mistakes all the time.

Teachers would absolutely do every single one of these things and more. The level of disrespect this idea shows actual police officers is absurd.

Instead of placing the blame on an organization that defends everyone's #2A rights, maybe people should take a hard look at the number of failures by the FBI and local law enforcement agencies, or does that not fit your agenda? #DefendtheSecond #NRA https://t.co/FyDRrWxvJW

The blue lives matter crowd sure is quick to throw cops under the bus!

It is bizarre to me that in the past year the right has starting pushing issues that boil down to:

1) cops are corrupt and biased and cannot be trusted to do the right thing
2) a cops job is so easy a teacher, who is already doing an entire other job on top of it, can handle the hardest part of their job

Like...this is the pro-cop party?

So many things wrong with this:
1) Maggie = No way
2) Bart = Libertarian
3) Marge = Well known fan of Jimmy Carter and John Anderson
4) Homer = He may be Republican because the joke with Homer, as everyone knows, is that he is poorly-informed and reactionary in the extreme

Word of god from one of the great show runners

One of my favorite episodes actually has Marge take the kids out of the house because Homer buys a gun.

It's like Ted Cruz never even saw the show or something.

Okay so there was an armed deputy at Stoneman Douglas, and he was too afraid to do anything and he has now quit his job

https://twitter.com/cbsnews/status/966801533642989569

But surely teachers will be braver!

The GOP is the party of "YOU NEED TO RESPECT THE COPS".

And now they're like "pfft any teacher could do the hardest part of a cops job".

Cops are trained for years to handle these situations. They have extensive training on decision making, handling a weapon, and how to engage. It is literally their job. They also know how to be on alert, and how to properly secure their firearm and defend it from someone trying to disarm them.

And these crazy people are like "YEE HAW I COULD DO THAT ANYONE COULD DO THAT GIVE TEACHERS A GUN PEW PEW PEW PEW". It should a blatant disrespect for what police do and what they go through to think this could go remotely well.

So the governor of Missouri was just indicted on felony invasion of privacy.

that happened today

Same guy that was accused of threatening a woman he had an affair with a few months back.

These charges are actually related to that.

This was supposed to be one of the "rising stars" of the GOP. I guess considering we live in the age of Trump, he probably still is >_>

Are Democrats really the party guilty of extreme labeling when the Republican President under a month ago called Democrats who didn't clap for his speech treasonous? Or how about last year when one of the President's children couldn't even see Democrats as human?

Be careful throwing stones when your glass house is already shattered around you.

Can't even recognize the difference

Why did you lose though?

Like would Kasich/Rubio/Jeb ever call countries "shithole countries"? Do you think they'd ever say that?

No?

Well, that's why they lost. There are a good chunk of the Republicans base that want that hatred, that vitriol, that extreme nationalism where everyone foreign is dirty and gross. #NotAllRepublicans, obviously, but hey, those Republicans lost and it wasn't even close. This wasn't the Dems where they didn't have any good, big name alternatives outside of Hillary and somehow Bernie Sanders almost got close to her regardless. This was a good field, and Trump massacred them.

The fact is that:

-Being pro-2A does not mean you want to see schoolchildren get shot
-Being against illegal immigration does not mean you hate Mexicans
-Being against BLM-inspired rioting after a cop shooting does not make you racist
-Being for expanded drilling/mining does not mean you want to destroy the environment
-Being for traditional marriage does not make you a homophobe

I fully expect many of you to argue against these facts in subsequent posts, but this is how a large number of people feel they are being labeled. Your side will never win those people over when the conclusions against them are this extreme.

I'm trying to help you out! I would give my left nut for someone like Trump never to get a major party nomination again, but the libs are making this really difficult.

It wasn't just the democrats who lost this past cycle.

If the republicans really weren't REDACTED SO FEELING WON'T BE HURT, they had Kasich, they had Jeb!, they had Rubio, etc etc etc. They had options with much of the same policy but without the rhetoric. In fact, they had true conservative options, something Trump was not and never will be.

Instead they went for the rhetoric. They went with "blood coming out of her whatever". They went with "they're sending their rapists and some, I assume, are good people". They went with "grab her by the pussy". They wanted this over true conservatism, so it should let you know that there is a good chunk of Trump's base that isn't there just because "oh I support conservative ideas".

That town hall was a thing of beauty.

Honestly, good on Rubio for showing up. He had to have known that was going to be brutal heading in, but he at least had the decency to face his constituents. Plenty of other politicians would have just chickened out under similar circumstances. I hope Floridians remember Rick Scott's absence when he tries to take Nelson's senate seat this year.
