Some people will argue this for sure, but I would suggest one of the SM Pokedex lists, the one that had a Pokemon called "Scruluse" (you can search around and find the list based on that name). There are a few reasons why I consider that list to be the best fake ever circulated, because it managed to avoid several traps and common naming conventions that practically every fake Pokedex tends to have.

This is an interesting thought question though. I wonder what other people would call the best fakes.

The thing that attracted me to Animal Crossing (when I was eagerly anticipating it through all of Nintendo Power's monthly previews) was specifically that it was not a goal-based game (like Harvest Moon). It was literally just start a character and live a normal life, doing whatever.

But I already know that your next question will be, well what's the appeal of living a (virtual) life and not having (ingame) goals? To that I say, I don't know, it's hard to explain. It's just a lot of freedom. Sure there are lots of other elements in the game that made me continue to like it, like the customization, the interactions with the characters, and the multitude of daily and seasonal events, but those are all things that I found out later, after playing the game. It was already appealing to me even before that.

A fully original game set in the same location as a previous game could potentially be interesting, even if it's Kanto and not somewhere good. The only other time they've done that was BW2, which I did not give the proper respect it may have deserved, so I'll try to be more open to the idea if it happens again.
