If it's a cup game and the job can't be done in 90 mins or 120, there's no other way.

After I heard that England's win on penalties was their first in World Cup history, I couldn't quite believe it and went back to look at past world cups, when I learned something I really never knew - penalties to determine the winner only first showed up in 1982, and before then a game ending tied after extra time would literally be entirely replayed, and even that only happened rarely (once in 1934 and a bunch in 1938 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1938_FIFA_World_Cup#Replays).

After 1938, no replays happened because no elimination games ended tied after extra time.

Literally I just counted it up, there were 37 knockout games 1950 through 1978, 44 if you count third place games (though I assume the "replay" rule wouldn't apply to them). What are the chances that 0 out of 37 games ended tied after 120 minutes, that seems mind-boggling since we get 3 or 4 each world cup nowadays...

Edit: after a little more reading, it looks like after 1938, the replay would only apply to a tied final and "drawing of lots" would occur for ties in non-final elimination games. Which makes a penalty shootout look a lot more appealing, than basically putting your fate in a coin flip... and still doesn't negate the point of none of those 37 games needing 'drawing of lots' or replays, either.

Yeah, I'm trying to remember their rationale for the change.... I think it was twofold, (1) it would create better rivalries by keeping it division-focused like in the Prince of Wales/Campbell Conference days, and (2) cut down on travel time/save money on travel costs, e.g. nobody in the Central division wants to deal with a team from the Pacific.

maybe it's just a quirk that the past 2 seasons, and looking like the next season, ended up having 3 of the top teams in the same division but it's really no good.

Montreal and Ottawa are going to be dogshit, and pretty sure Detroit and Buffalo will too. Florida might be competitive for a wild card spot like last year, but catching up to Toronto? Assuming Toronto even was slated to finish 3rd? So much would have to go so wrong for the Leafs to miss the playoffs, even Andersen getting injured wouldn't be enough (they might actually improve, if they don't use McElhinney/actually call up Sparks). Nothing seems as certain as top 3 in the Atlantic, it's just a matter of who finishes where.

Last time I was in Vegas, one of the bets I wanted to place at the sportsbook was a parlay of heavy favourites in college football and would get a decent payout if this series of "sure things" all won. Did all my research, went to the sportsbook and learned, when the odds get too lopsided, they don't even allow you to bet on the game (the good news is I still did the parlay with the best bettable teams and it succeed, got a nice return, though there were some definite close calls).

Thinking about betting on the Leafs and whether they make the playoffs or not reminded me of that. "Name your odds", indeed.

Edit: and I just googled and apparently the Leafs, Lightning and Bruins are the top 3 teams favoured to win the cup. In that order. And they're in the same division. Which means (if it played out) the 2nd and 3rd best teams in a 31-team league would meet in the first round. When are they changing this horrible playoff system again???

I just can't see that working money-wise, especially when they wanted someone to eat Bobby Ryan in the same trade? Almost 14 million between those two, and that's just this year, and Tampa's so close to the cap max. I just don't get it.

But man, a team with Hedman and Karlsson, plus Kucherov and Stamkos... would be trending to Golden State Warriors territory there.

I know the fear of an offer being rescinded is there, but that really shouldn't happen if it's a company of any size or reputation. If we're talking a big-name firm here, it really shouldn't happen.

I have had success in the past where I was offered X, I really wanted X + 10 so I said I was hoping for X + 20. And sure enough, they "split the difference" and amended the offer to X + 10. So I thought of that here, you could say you were looking for 70, and if they come back with 65 you're golden. But I had the leverage in my case, knowing that wasn't the kind of company that would rescind an offer so there was no harm in at least trying it.

The difference between 62.5 and 70 may be too much to push for. Let's say you ask for 65k instead, one of four things happens:
-They accept
-They say they can't budge and you accept it, at least you tried
-They're really pedantic and do the "split the difference" to an amount between 62.5 and 65, you get a few extra bux out of it
-They totally rescind the offer. If they rescind the offer over you asking for a mere $2,500 (which is literally like $50 a week of gross pay), is that even a company you want to work for? It seems unnecessarily cruel, when they could simply just say "sorry 62.5 is the final offer, we can't budge".

Also, it seems you already established 65k as a number you had in mind. It's standard procedure for a recruiter to ask what your expectations are - did that happen? If you quoted 65-70 as your expectations and they offered you a number below your floor, well, that might not be the best sign (but there is also a chance of miscommunication or that nugget of info not making its way from the interview to the offer). "Internal equity" may also come into play, they may not want to hire you at a salary too close to who your boss will be, or at a higher salary than another person on the team, so their hands may be tied in that respect.

I would take the gamble and ask for 65k, but I know there is some risk and great fear there. I know it's scary but if it's a big company, I just can't see them rescinding it totally over such a small ask, it'd be so simple for them to just say "sorry 62.5 is final offer"... so long as there is logic in your counter to 65k, either based on what you were making previously or based on what your "market research for an appropriate salary for someone with my experience and certification" provided, it should be good.

Just uh, don't blame me if these people are jerks.
