like hidden immunity idols have not always been a thing, and seasons 22 and 23 had a thing (redemption island) that was completely beyond what people would consider "still Survivor". (certainly that's more dramatic a format adjustment than the open-forum jury) the f4 fire twist is hard to gauge, but this season it felt much more palatable (and i think fans generally agree) because it was known from the start, and the ire was because of a player winning because of it, where nobody came back and won due to redemption island. i can only imagine the complaints that would've flooded survivor fan forums 6 or so years ago had ozzy won south pacific tbqh

i dunno, the show has changed stuff all the time, it'll change again. it's not struggling in the ratings, it will go through its ups and downs, i'm just...not really worried.

like, do i think 37 and 38 might be lame because they are still too gimmick-heavy and the producers aren't listening? yeah, maybe. but i'm still enjoying the show enough, and it'll still be there. not gonna sweat it that hard tbqh

honestly even though i thought game changers was bad and this season sucked, hhh would've been like a top-10 level season if it werent for the last-second twist that gave ben the win over devon tbqh

and uh seasons 21-24 happened, it's been much worse before lol

this was a boring season

i mean its cool that we finally had a tie on the jury? but even that felt underwhelming in the face of everything else being so unexciting? i dunno. laurel gets a bunch of crap but she was in a difficult spot, because dom and wendell really were her alliance. what do angie, sebastian, etc have to say for doing nothing and being voted out?

resistance (with avalon/resistance-universe-equivalent expansion) is still the best

its the most pure and simple social deduction experience, which is generally what i want in that kind of game

dc deckbuilder was like a garbage dominion clone tbqh

i just struggled to deal with all the ways it tried to be different while still being almost entirely the same and just sucked a lot more

yeah i dont love rococo (it's pretty good but area control is not my first love)
however, its use of deckbuilding/trashing/cycling is clever and incorporates new and old mechanics into a greater whole
not just "exactly the same as dominion, but the provinces are slightly different"

kaoh rong is a great great season

like legitimately, if aubry won people would talk about it as a top 10 season. i'm bummed she lost too but ultimately it was still an amazing ride

(i also liked nick maiorano a lot; he turned out to be pretty level-headed and well-spoken in his ponderosa stuff, go figure)

so i love dominion but honestly i think i hate pretty much every other deckbuilder i've ever played

it's like they tried to be dominion but removed all the things that make it good

the center card row is generally garbage. multiple currencies don't really work. (even most dominion fans hate potions, which are reasonably well implemented) some games just aren't even pretending to be something different, but are still worse in terms of balance or design.

the best deckbuilding-based games are ones where the deck-building/cycling mechanic (such as in, say, rococo, great western trail or, more abstractly, concordia) is really the only thing taken from dominion, and latched onto a much more complex and involved game.

the tribal was hectic and mike didnt play it perfectly but i dont blame him for giving it a shot
he's a newbie, the stakes were high, and he wasn't sure what he had (and really, we weren't sure where any of the naviti folks were at, given all we saw was bradley stifling everyone)

so yeah, could've been played better, but i like his gumption in the moment. bodes well for him being an interesting character, at least

on the other hand, big ups to kellyn for making the a+ move and not going for the advantage. i think if she loses the coin flip and loses her vote, she totally blows the naviti alliance and possibly ruins her game. we don't even know if it was an advantage she'd get to keep, or something like jacob's legacy toss from ep1. she looked at the immediate concern instead of taking the bait

seasons is not my favorite game and i found it underwhelming in a few irl plays

but i've had a good time with it on bga - there are some games that weirdly come together much more without all the overhead (not usually the case for me) and for some reason having most of the fiddly stuff managed makes the game shine

it's still not great (i still find the obligation to play every card to be kind of silly, when you have to draft crap you don't want sometimes) but it's very fine

agricola and power grid are both "classics" and i like em but neither has any specific element that makes me love the game

so, like, they'd go in a distinct tier of great-but-not-favorites (where i'd also have puerto rico and terra mystica)

yeah i generally tend to lean on the tombolo side of that equation, which is why my favorite games (dominion, race for the galaxy, castles of burgundy, galaxy trucker, the resistance) are ones i've played and overplayed, and gone through multiple cycles of being super into, and subsequently burnt out on

small world is...fine? i dont really love the board-grabbing competition, which often has kingmaking problems, but the "bidding" on race-attribute combos and the variation that creates is rad (and easily the most exciting part of the game)

love letter is fine, but it's a little too much randomness for my taste. a game like welcome to the dungeon is a standout filler for me, it packs a lot of juice and tension into its few decisions. a good filler should be reasonably quick (hi there munchkin) and still feel like your choices matter. (i think coup is pretty great on this front too, though some of the balance issues there, and the endgame, are problems)

ra is so goddamn good

like for a game with such a small amount of decision making, it packs so much punch into all those little decisions

and yeah, i'm biased because i win at it a lot. but it's really a skill-intensive game, which is surprising given its push-your-luck nature

it's knizia's masterpiece, from a designer who has a lot of games that people would call masterpieces
