I've never been but my wife has friends who own a nice condo there so when I return to Thailand to process my z visa and family visa for China, we plan to visit them for a couple days. We've gone to Bangla Road in Phuket and had a blast at the Go-Go bars there. The red light district in Bangkok however wasn't much fun. Was just a bunch of single guys with hookers on their laps. It still happens but not remotely on the level of Cambodia or the Philippines. As for why I visited Thailand in the first place, the first time was a simple backpacker for 2 months. SEA is by far the easiest/cheapest/most accessible backpacking destination in the world. The second time I went for 8 months to travel the rest of SEA (Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar) and train/compete in Muay Thai (fought professionally twice during that period). That's when I happened to meet my wife. what other reason would you have to move to Thailand? Many reasons.
