I think what the RLM guys said is true - Marvel is a really expansive universe and each character has his/her own developed backstory that can be adapted to film and there's a lot to work with. And Star Wars is the opposite, it's actually just really limited and there's only so much you can do with it.

This is pretty much true. What made Star Wars so interesting back in the day was that the characters were essentially just archetypes. All the characters in the original trilogy are super one dimensional, have no backstory whatsoever, and very little growth over the series. You can make something like the prequel trilogy or Solo to give these characters more character but you're essentially making it up as you go along. None of that is baked in from the start.

And as an aside, as much as people have complained about it since the Disney acquisition, none of the EU was ever canon. George said many times before that he thinks what other people are doing with his universe is awesome but the only "real" Star Wars is what comes from him. The only thing that was officially decanonized was The Force Unleashed games which is no great loss.

Well, that's just not true. Fallout and TES make their living on exploration. First person is even better for exploration because you can get your nose right into everything. They also tend to be more interactive rather than just picking up things that glow or have a button prompt on them.

Nut there is nothing restrictive about guns. You have a whole spectrum of ranges that they can be used at, different firing rates. You can specialize in sniping or running in with a shotgun which play completely differently. If you're not going fully realistic you can also throw in a bunch of different ammo types, alternate firing, crossbows, long bows, various explosives. Compare that to The Witcher 3 which has fantastic combat using just a sword and a few magic spells. I don't know why you think shooters are so restricted. And that also has nothing to do with that fact that you can't walk ten feet without bumping into an open world TPS, so why are there not a similar number of FPS?

The vast majority of games are combat based. Again, there is nothing inherent to FPS that says it has to be just that any more than anything else. There's also plenty of ways to go about combat to keep it fresh and interesting.

FPS work best when you have a path and a mission. It's supposed to be high octane action. Hard to do that when you transverse wilderness for a while.

FPS isn't inherently any more high octane than TPS. Linear FPS games have a whole spectrum of pacing. First person is immersive and shooting is just fun. It works more than fine in an open world.

FPS is consistently popular and open world games are bigger than ever yet the only stable franchises are Fallout and Farcry. Homefront The Revolution came out a few years ago and Rage 2 is coming out soon and that's pretty much your lot. I've got a dozen ideas for games like this but no one seems to be making them. Is first person significantly harder to program compared to third person so that if a company wants to crap out a quick cash in open world game it's better to go third or what? This has been bothering me for a while.

For a few years now there's been the big argument of which streaming service is best but people completely forget that Netflix, along with streaming, has pretty much every movie and TV show ever for their disk service. And that option is the same price as Hulu with no ads. Granted getting disks day in and day out isn't the best for tv shows (although it is doable) but for movies Netflix still can't be beat.

I don't disagree with your assessment, but I wasn't as disappointed by FC3 since it was still relatively new and all three games had been unique up to that point. I was, however, really disappointed with Far Cry 4, which was a complete rehash.

It was new for the series but it was essentially just an FPS version of Assassin's Creed. It had similarities like the framework of the game with the tower system and the only side content being the same five mission types repeating ad nauseum and boring collectibles. They also effectively made it a stealth game by giving you massive point bonuses for stealth gameplay. Honestly I could go on for hours. It was still fairly fun but it just had no soul or focus.
