It's a position that plays behind the line (OL or DL) hence the 'back' in its title. A full back plays from further behind the line than a quarter back or running back.

Maybe in the old days but in modern football philosophy the fullback lines up right behind the quarterback and what they call half backs or running backs line up behind the fullback.

When you are done with your current playthrough you should definitely try starting out as a vassal. You learn a lot about vassal mechanics from being on the other side. Its also more relaxing and less war intensive as long as your liege doesnt decide to revoke your title...

One of my favorite starts is Herbert Karling in 1066. Basically, the founder of the Holy Roman Empire in the 769 start, Charlemagne, only has a few dynasty members and one county after 300 years.

I started one as Herbert and got really lucky. I sent my chancellor to fabricate a claim hoping I would get the duchy claim and I actually got it! So got a duchy really fast haha. At some point my liege was overthrown and the new liege was pretty old so when he died his son didnt have his troops up so I was able to get him to abdicate. I wasnt sure what this was going to do I thought maybe Id get the kingdom but some other guy got it. So I married one of my nephews or something into the family.

At one time or another my Wife inherited the neighboring county and my son was somehow in line to inherit my holdings and the duchy...until he was murdered. Im guessing the murderer really wants that land and was murdering all the people in front of him in line...Anyway, Ive lost all my sons and my heir is that nephew married into the rulers family.

At some point I became the regent for the king and I am also somehow the heir to the kingdom so I was really trying to have the king die or something but alas he grew up and now its gonna be hard to kill him for now. I think I might have been the regent for a while but Im not sure. Wish they would have told me I would have definitely had the time to depose him.

Ill try and post pictures later. If I ever get to king Im probably gonna swear fealty to the HRE so I can maybe get that title from the inside.

What do you mean their levies are higher than you? If this is the case you need to improve your demense, send your marshal to train troops in your capital (increases the levy size while he is there), increase your own martial stat and check your counties for negative modifiers.

As for crown authority, medium is pretty good. They changed the crown authority mechanic in conclave so Im rusty on that but a quick look at the wiki was helpful

Once you get that king title taking the rest of the island is pretty easy if the rulers are still counts. You can offer them vassalization and they usually accept

And the owner of k_norway could have just changed their primary to k_scotland or a ruler had both and they have gavelkind.

Haha the key is to send in a smaller unit to build a fort first then when the fort is built move your army in.

On the topic of morality in this game, I always play benevolently for the most part. In fact, usually when I play Ireland I try to keep tabs on the dynasties that own land I took from so I can either give them their county back someday or give them a barony in their land.

But yeah, there are good aspects of consolidating land and if you want headcanon, just remember that if you dont unite the land its going to be ruled by the English, Welsh, or Scots soon enough rather than a land of Irish ruled by Irish. Or use head canon and think you need to protect all these women being treated badly all over the world. There are definitely way to justify war in a positive way

Did you take your 300 gold loan from the Jews yet? If so you might be screwed if you have no money, otherwise take the loan out (its a decision in intrigue screen) and hope the cheapest mercenary company is not being used.

Basically at the start of every game you should take that loan and start a war with your target and buy a cheap merc.
In Ireland or most one country starts you can steamroll most of the island with your levy and mercs. Dont disband the mercs until you run low on money. At that point you should have an advantage over the rest of the island so you can conquer them. The sooner you can get over 50% or the island and save enough money and prestige to create the king title the sooner you can offer vassalization to whoever is left and hopefully avoid more wars.

Seven kids and I can't find a good spouse for any of them. I feel like restarting was pointless. I thought I understood better how to get good marriages but I can't get any.

You cant marry the first or second in line. You have to go down the line of succession a few steps. You need to get that marriage before the female becomes landed and has to worry about heirs with their dynasty. Same with a matrilineal marriage. You get a son that is a little off the radar but has a claim, and then you press the claim. But remember you need to be a duke to press other peoples county titles and keep them as vassals.

IMO trying to do female centric tribal is hard and annoying. Gavelkind makes a lot of people important and inheritance confusing. If I remember correctly you are doing a year 867 start. The Ireland that is tutorial island is 1066. Which is much easier to play the marriage game.

No reason for me to go through all that work for something unlikely to be reused imo. The story that I posted was for the entertainment of myself and an irl friend. I only posted it here to give new players a taste of what might happen in a generation for a fairly difficult character. And heck, some of the advice I gave was catered specifically to HitTheGroundWalking so other plays might not think it's that useful.

If you click on your character's picture and look at where it says titles, you'll see a line of flags/coat of arms. Above each one is a crown. Since you're a king, you definitely have one title which should have a king crown with the red fluffy thing in it. If you have any ducal-level titles, they'll have a crown which has a few jewels in it. The county-level crowns are plain gold. If you have any barony-level titles, which are really tiny crowns and look like they have some silver in them, you want to get rid of those immediately. I'll tell you how to do that if that's the problem, but I doubt it is, so I'll skip it.

In the future, if you guys do make an official topic helping people out or just a general, explaining things like that might be more useful with a screen cap.

Tanistry is probably my favorite succession anyway. Most cultures need to get out of tribalism to get out of gavelkind but irish does not. Tanistry is better than elective monarchy imo

Feudalism gives you the opportunity to make money and have a bigger and better equipped army.

Nah its because you are weak or nowhere near them. Why would they want a non aggression pact with someone who couldnt beat them in a fight? And since you are a count, they might take prestige hits for marrying down if they dukes or Kings

Nice! By taking screenshots I meant like a picture of the people you talk about.

Earlier you were saying about how you dont know about non aggression pacts. Well they are extremely important! Anyone who is your relative or married to your relatives and has land can have a pact and if they like you enough an alliance. An alliance makes it so if you go to war they will join you or suffer huge penalties. On the other side of the coin if they declare wars you will be obliged to join their wars. But you really dont have to do anything. Just join their wars and dont do anything.

What you do is get some pacts and alliances and use their armies to fight your wars for you. You can have someone else conquer the whole island for you pretty much. Just have to remember that if any of the members or reasons for the pact die you have to reinstitute the pact or alliance. So find a big guy and marry someone into an alliance so your size is bigger. Just have to be careful because they might have their own alliances

This is one of the big advantages of spreading your dynasty to other lands. Iirc you said you had some grandson or uncle or something. Ally with them they will give you a soldier advantage

Protip for iOS Safari users: they added content blockers a few versions ago so you can download ad block extensions for Safari. I got 1Blockerit costs money to upgrade to block stuff like Facebook widgets and stuff but with the free version it will block ads. I havent had one ad problem since I got while being wrecked by ads prior
