45. Beat a game that's been adapted into another medium

LEGO Batman the Videogame

A videogame based on a comic book franchise represented by a toyline that's been adapted into its own movie.

- Fun for the most part. The character selection is good, the destructive collectathon aspect is always good fun, the puzzles aren't too difficult but creative enough to enjoy them especially since this is also aimed at young kids, and it's fun comic book action beat em up. However, while the destruction and comic book aspects remind me joyfully of X-Men Legends II; the physics, hit confirmation, and just odd/bad AI gave me frustration flashbacks to Hot Tin Roof with its horrible camera placements for awkward jumps. The hardest level was 1-2 for just how stupid the AI was and horrible some of those jumps/slippery floors were. It was my last 'Superhero' stud get because of a lot of flailing it took to get my AI out of ****.

I'm at 77.6% after beating the Villains story mode and may go for 100% at some point, but I'm ready to just chalk up another tally and see what's next on the agenda.

39. Finish a game in one day

Candy Box 2

- Another browser game to pass the work day. It was decently fun and I'm glad it had a goal line. It wasn't just an idle clicker, but a half-way decent action-platformer-RPG... okay, it wasn't all that great, but it passed a solid five and a half hours. Some decently difficult puzzles and hidden picture kind of puzzles in an ASCII grid.

If we were to have an Undertaker match at Wrestlemania at this point with him having not shown up at all... Honestly, I'd want Cena to be in the audience for half the show. He's just there, he's not on the card, and they show him as minimally as they can while still reminding us he's there. Hall of Famer Kid Rock will give us a concert bathroom break at some point. After the second or third song, his set is supposed to end. But he had a request from someone in the back for some poor kid in the audience, or maybe something less obvious, and he starts playing "American Badass."

Biker Taker rolls in and rides all the way down to the ring and calls out Cena with some excellent badass one-liner or something. And they fight.

51. Beat three games in a series

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair

- Finished it last night, staying up an extra five hours from my usual cutoff time to complete it because the endgame was just that hectic. Just Monokuma. It was definitely a much better and fully realized game than the first with improved gameplay, some better mechanics, and an insanely twisty story that builds well off the first.

There was a point late in the game where we receive a certain bit of information, 11037, and I quit the game to play a bit of the first again. It was a weird transition hearing Monokuma's old voice and the chirpier, more cartoonish characters. I got to refresh my memories on the characters, and came out of the first case... really appreciating the depth and complexity of all the sequel's peoples. The first game had some terrible, terrible inclusions (Toko, Kiyotaka, Yasuhiro, Hifumi) that only got worse and more flanderized over time. Pretty much everyone in the sequel are people I really want to go back and get hope fragments for.

I'm definitely rambling. DR2 was an excellent game and likely in the top five of games so far, but I have to mention a few flaws first.

- The endgame, as fun and nostalgic as it was, did feel a bit disappointing in how it really felt like a lot of agency was taken from these characters with the endgame of DR1 spilling completely over. It makes absolute sense in terms of story, but I also felt pangs of despair when our characters were brushed over to the side as tools for the plot. The Darth Revan reveal was not wholly unexpected, but kind of disappointing. I was the ultimate badguy and chance for ultimate good all along! From zero to most important person ever in no time. At least it explains why Hajime, and a lot of the cast, are such complete awful jerks near the beginning.

- A lot of the cases, while very fun to figure out, were just convoluted and silly. I blame Nagito.

- I think I've heard about a certain portion of a certain case talked very negatively before. The swimsuit with gravel in Case 2? If so, holy **** that was aggravating and unintuitive. I really hope there was something lost in translation there because the rest of the game felt somewhat logical in the steps it took despite the zaniness of some of the murders.

I'm done rambling. Very, very fun and entertaining game I'm going to play more of soon.

First Game Complete Report Cards: Celestia, Kyoko
Second Game Complete Hope Fragments: Gundham, Chiaki

This write-up sounds awful, but I've only had three hours of sleep so its to be expected.

#123 - Steve Blackman Nominated by: GOGZero

Steve Blackman's role in WWE was not to be like The Rock or Steve Austin, because he wasn't much of a talker. However, his likability came from the fact that he had a martial arts prowess. In fact, he was probably the best Hardcore champion thanks to his unique background. There was an air of legitimacy to Blackman that didn't exist elsewhere in WWE, allowing him to fit in on the midcard with a variety of opponents. Anyone from Ken Shamrock to Kane would get the same match out of him, but it was a unique match. Earlier in these rankings, I talked about how WCW would show 8 different matches every week and nowadays on RAW we essentially watch the same match 8 times each episode. Blackman was the type of guy that would allow the Attitude Era RAWs to run different matches. His style was wholly separate from everyone else out there.

In terms of charisma, however, he was a Lance Storm level talker. This isn't to say that you have to be a great talker to be a great wrestler. However, when you position yourself as a star in an era of the best talkers in the business, you naturally are going to come across as leaden and uninteresting in comparison. Steve Blackman was, in fact, not The Rock. It got to a point, eventually, where Blackman would be put into comedic backstage segments simply to highlight how stoic he was. And that... kind of worked. Of course, once Lance Storm started doing the same thing (and Lance actually has an amazing dry wit so he knew how to play with the straight man role much better), Blackman's prototype was rendered virtually obsolete.

Still, as a Hardcore Championship contender and winner, Blackman excelled. He was Glacier done right.

Also, never forget that he came out to Jungle Japes:

#129 - James Ellsworth Nominated by: paulg

I don't know how much higher he could go considering the who's who still to come, but I think Ellsworth could potentially be higher. Yes, the holding pattern with Carmella took him out of things for pretty much good until the Money in the Bank to exit, but he was one of the craziest and natural characters in the fall and winter of the amazing Smackdown Live.

There are two things I feel like the write-up neglected: Strowman and why he went heel. Strowman had just gotten separated from the Wyatt family in the brand draft, and he was due for a series of 'monster squashes local talent' stuff to get him over. As we saw when they did this for Nia Jax and the Bludgeon Brothers, it's not very memorable or helpful in this day and age. And this was back before Strowman was a monster among men. This was the guy who could barely wrestle, and looked completely utterly awful against the Dudleys a few weeks (months?) before. They were looking to rebuild Strowman as his own man and not a really bad Wyatt pawn. But Strowman's first opponent? It's this no chinned white trash looking guy with no muscles and a really really awful haircut (I liken him to Barnell 'Beak' Bohusk from Grant Morrison's X-Men). Like, this guy is going to just get squashed by the new Vince project and its going to be 'been there, seen that' like so many squash journeys before.

But you know what's crazy? This nothing, pitiable, flabby, Gillberg-looking no-name... thinks he can actually take on the six-foot-something wall of beef mcstroganoff? That he can try for the upset?

"Any man with two hands has a fighting chance."

Like, it's insane. And Braun just wrecks him. Just absolute carnage. In my opinion, this is the first match where Braun looks... like a monster. He was big bearded babyface until he fought Ellsworth; this was the genesis of the Braun we know and love today. James Ellsworth did his job, and he made Braun Strowman shine. And now that he's wrecked, it should be done there. What other jobbers from his squashes or any other squash runs show up ever again, or even this soon? But he comes back. AJ Styles brings him to Smackdown to piss off the Miz. And then he gets a (charity) match with AJ Styles... that special guest referee Dean Ambrose gives Ellsworth (who thankfully was not killed when he botched taking AJ's Styles Clash, good looking out AJ) the win. And then he hits AJ Styles in their rematch with that sweet looking superkick after getting (literally) tossed around like a ragdoll. Ellsworth helped cement Smackdown as a land of opportunity, and added to both Ambrose's mindgames and trolling and AJ Styles' frustration and bruised ego (which would help lead to AJ vs. Shane). The with two or three wins over AJ Styles, he thought he was hot **** and let his fluke, tainted wins get to his head and he became an overconfident, patronizing, full of himself, horrorshow heel, but it worked. Overnight, and the perfect time, he just flipped and the crowd flipped with him and, sadly, he joined with Carmellla and fell away, but yeah, he was amazing for a while.

Also, eating all the superkicks from the Smackdown women's roster before he left was amazing.

Additionally, watching some more Ambrose-Styles clips... James Ellsworth interrupting the WMitB to drop the briefcase to Carmella is absolutely consistent with his character of disrupting big matches. How many times did he cost Ambrose with his poor decision making? Hell, trying to fight Braun in the first place showed where his head was at.

4. Beat a game released between 2010-2017

Dead Maze
(Kongregate)

- At least I've completed all current story content (Blue Mesa). If I had known the only category I could rightly fit it in was its year, I probably wouldn't have played so much, but it's really helped pass the work day the past month.

This is a pretty fun game. Its a zombie apocalypse survival MMO so you know pretty much what you're going to get for gameplay, but its got some surprising depth. There is a nice gradual growth to your character and what he or she can make use of. You start off with nothing but the ripped up clothes on your back and a banged up weapon, but after a decent prologue, you soon get to explore a rather large map at your leisure with a wide variety of items to pick up and try and figure out what's worth space in your backpack. Weapons break quickly, the zombies show no mercy, and you run out of food and water pretty quickly. There's a good deal of exploration and danger that isn't severe, but you do have to pay some attention. It's casual enough where you don't have to fully invest either (which is perfect for work).

Then after a little while, you obtain a house and start being able to craft things and store materials, then there's research, and gardening, and the daily quests, and the storyline opening up new maps. Then you may learn about Secret Passages and the hunt for its loot. Now you might be learning what items drop precious metals and why paper is functionally useless. You go on adventures and try not to lose your survivor gear by dying. Then you may find zombies with special clothing drops and Peruvians and boss monsters. And still, seventy-five levels later, you feel like you're not having as much trouble with the zombies as before, but its very easy to get too overconfident and get slaughtered.

I'm likely going to keep playing, but I just powered through the last of the current story today (Highway 99 is evil) to add to my list. Really more fun than expected. There are some pay-to-play elements, but its mostly just for clothes and cosmetics. Clothes *ARE* a big deal since they're expensive to level, difficult to find (while just last week only available in stores), and give you permanent buffs with what you add to the clothes, but you still never feel left far behind since even the best weapons have break limits and they're all lootable. Rarity depends on maps, containers, indoors/outdoors, difficulty of mobs, and certain perks you can equip for more difficult challenges.

The only way to win is to escape both cages. You have a limited amount of time to get out of the first cage.

And even with the handicap, people would have still believed Jinder would lose. Jinder is THAT far behind Orton in terms of kayfabe strength. Remember, Jinder had been on a 6-month losing streak up until a month before this.

And before that, his only notable appearance was beating Heath Slater to get his job back with the WWE.

And before that, he was fired for two or three years.

And just before that, we had the amazing WeeLC match.

And just before that....

AP - AP Exclusive: Kushner Cos. filed false NYC housing paperwork

When the Kushner Cos. bought three apartment buildings in a gentrifying neighborhood of Queens in 2015, most of the tenants were protected by special rules that prevent developers from pushing them out, raising rents and turning a tidy profit.

But that's exactly what the company then run by Jared Kushner did, and with remarkable speed. Two years later, it sold all three buildings for $60 million, nearly 50 percent more than it paid.

Now a clue has emerged as to how President Donald Trump's son-in-law's firm was able to move so fast: The Kushner Cos. routinely filed false paperwork with the city declaring it had zero rent-regulated tenants in dozens of buildings it owned across the city when, in fact, it had hundreds.

While none of the documents during a three-year period when Kushner was CEO bore his personal signature, they provide a window into the ethics of the business empire he ran before he went on to become one of the most trusted advisers to the president of the United States.

https://apnews.com/amp/002703e70347481cb993027d04f543cc?__twitter_impression=true

Not having signatures from him for three years probably hurts the legal case against Kushner, but it still looks mighty shady.

Seems about right for a guy who probably continues to update his foreign contacts.

Though, I watched the RLM review and don't know anything about a boss that blocks tons of damage. Grah. I'm both satisfied with including this, and not satisfied because there's more and it's early access.

Still. Really, really fun game that scratches a good itch.

EDIT: Statistics screen says I have a victory so, we good.

8. Beat a spin-off or a game that rebooted a franchise

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below

- Finally beat another game after sputtering out on a few, and continuing to delay some 2017 save files.

Dragon Quest Heroes is the second musou game I've played. I started Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends for this topic, but I've only completed one campaign so far and get quite disinterested in playing after a map or two at a time. I don't know how long until I can add that to this list, but I'm going to make some comparisons now.

Though DW8XL boasts many more weapon types, more complex combat, a host of personalities, and much bigger maps... as someone who doesn't know anything about the Romance lore, it's just too all over the place for my tastes. Characters come and go with little fanfare, the story jumps forward years after nearly every chapter, the maps are confusing and similar, and you're forced upon new characters with completely different playstyles all the time. The game has felt like more of a chore.

Dragon Quest Heroes is definitely an easier game that trades battlefield warfare and hidden missions for a really fun story, fun and familiar enemies, and a great cast of characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the pacing of the game and the amount of sidequests. Character voices and combat styles were well-defined and fun. The cutscenes were entertaining. I love the classic Dragon Quest soundtrack (that I heard all the time playing Fortune Street). This was so much fun and revitalized a yearning to play the classics. My friend even went out and bought Dragon Quest VIII after watching some of my play.

Some of the most fun continues to be trying to beat up Metal Slimes. I love the chase!

And THAT match makes Stephen Amell look like a goddamn Hall of Famer (although admittedly, Amell was actually pretty darn impressive). There really is nothing worse.

Holy ****. I just realized no one in that feud is with WWE anymore. I mean, Neville might be, but he still hasn't been seen since Summerslam, and Stardust and King Barrett were gone before the brand split.

At least Derek Sampson still shows up from time to time on Arrow (I think?)

44. Miami Connection
Nominated by: Mega Mana (0/5 remaining)

If I learned anything from watching RedLetterMedia over the years, its that movie covers and posters more often than not are complete liars. Low-budget schlock titles and rip-off B-movies want your eyeballs and they want your dollars, so they're not above putting awesome shit on their covers to get said eyeballs and dollars. Sitting down to actually watch the flick is another story, as the films either fail to live up to the cover or lack what's on the cover completely. Miami Connection is a different beast however. For once, what you see IS what you get! What a novel concept. So yeah, you're in for motorcycle ninjas, cheesy rock and roll, and yes, you asked for it, someone even gets to open up a letter they got in the mail! And every part of it is beautiful. The artwork here is just shoddy enough to be charming and just good enough to accurately show what's going to be happening. Sure, everyone has potatoes for faces and there's plently of awkward kung-fu and gun-holding but that warm Miami sunset will make sure everything is all right in the end.

I love this poster, I want this poster, and everytime I see neon blue and neon pink on a poster, I think of this movie.

The only thing on the poster we DON'T get... is Miami.

Geez, it's been two weeks since I beat a game. It's not that I'm not at it, I'm just not... very good at beating games.

Current games over last two weeks:
- Dead Maze (Kongregate)
- Final Fantasy X
- Final Fantasy X-2
- Invisible Inc.
- 100% Orange Juice
- Stardew Valley
- Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends
- Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2
- Dragon Quest Heroes
- GeneForge
- Danganronpa 2

And probably a few others I'm forgetting at this moment. I hope to complete most of them, but I'm very bad at sticking to one thing, lol.
