These are actually some really interesting numbers on voting with Trump. I had no idea Rand Paul was the biggest dissenter, but I guess that makes sense. He just falls in line better for the important votes better than Murkowski and Collins do, I guess.

Manchin is also closer to Rand Paul than he is any other member of his party with three exceptions: Jones, Heitkamp, and Donnelly. And inspire of the HUGE WV swing for Trump, Manchin actually isn't the biggest headache for Republicans (primarily because of how often he votes with Trump). That would actually be Tester of Montana, who is way more liberal than I would've guessed considering how popular he is out there.

I agree with you, I just dont think its a big deal to single him out. Every Senator says what their constituents want to hear

Which is sort of my point. Joe Manchin has consistently voted similarly since his days in WV. It isn't like he's taken new positions to appease Trump.

And going "oh he hasn't voted for any of these important tie breaking things" is asinine when its only come up all of like three times in the past two years. That's a bizarre way to measure how much someone supports the policy of Trump when there are almost no votes where that matters then. Manchin is in the middle, and thus has an important vote. He's still sided with Trump over 60% of the time.

Like, if you argue it that way, then almost no senator has had any votes that mattered in the past two years, not just Manchin.

You're operating in this insanely narrow limitation where what is really supporting Trump and what is playing lip service then. There's like ten senators in that range that are all important in deciding what gets passed and what doesn't.

Also I mean go back and check his positions when he was governor of WV. It isn't like this is out of character.

I mean with Pence breaking any tie-breaker, the only ones that Manchin could truly put over are 50-50 votes where he sides with Republicans. His vote is largely irrelevant in 51-49 decisions because if he voted with the Dems, Pence would still break the tie.

And there are almost zero scenarios where this has happened, which is why it is a terrible measure of "how much he supports Trump".

It happened literally a handful of times.

He was the first democrat to come out in favor and signaled she was going to get confirmed. It wasn't like he was one of the last democrats that came out when it was a foregone conclusion, was my point.

Corrik's argument is that Manchin is doing this out of political expediency, which is bunk.

I mean, he votes with him 61% for the time, but three other Democrats vote with Trump 50%+. And he ultimately voted with Dems on the tax bill and the skinny Obamacare repeal.

It's West Virginia, a state Trump won by 40%. The idea of a standard progressive ever taking that position is zero percent.

^
This is also why Democrats are lucky to have him and would be dumb to run him out of the party.
Only 61% out of WV is a miracle.

Your insanely limited definition describes like four votes of all the last two years then.

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/congress-trump-score/joe-manchin-iii/

He voted for Trump's policies on plenty of close votes, many of which he was the one that pushed it over the hump. The Pompeo nomination I cited earlier is the latest relevant example.

He votes with Trump like 70% of the time!

The only consequential vote he voted against that didn't also have Republican dissent was the tax bill.

The other "big" ones where health care and a couple of random cabinet positions. He was basically the vote that confirmed his CIA director was getting confirmed when she was having Republican opposition.

He's fairly conservative, and has voted with Trump a ton.

Yeah, I don't think it is just about reelection.

In 2010, he literally ran for his senate seat with an ad that had him taking a rifle to Obama's cap and trade bill. He never endorsed Obama in 2012 and still won't say who he voted for.

He's about as conservative a democrat as you'll ever get.

Congratulations, you can read a list of side effects. Please tell me when you understand the agent's MOA and its activity on a person's neurophysiology.

You have made a factually incorrect assumption in your previous post. Not sure why you are even bothering to dispute this when you know you were just guessing based on anecdotal experience.

As someone who is actually a chemist and is actually working in pharmacology right now, I think I outrank you on "knowing what I'm talking about" and can say you don't really know what you're talking about.

At least, you are greatly over exaggerating the negative effectives while minimizes the positives of ambien over its closest competitors. You're "working" on a competitor now (I'm assuming you aren't a chemist or scientist based on the way you talk so far so you must be on the business end of it?) - the people around you are likely to over exaggerate the benefits of their product specifically because they're trying to market it at the moment. They're not going to go "yeah ambien is ok but the side effects of this are slightly less serious" which if I had to guess is the actuality of the situation.

That being said, I think the truth of the situation is somewhere between the rock and seph. Ambien does have some potentially nasty side effects and one of them is dependence. It can also lead to some really bizarre side effects in an extreme minority of people. The vast majority report no negative side effects at all, so this is something to keep in mind. All these anecdotes of "well my uncle took it and went to North Dakota and started a bluegrass band" are just anecdotes, and do not affect 99% of people that take the drug. This is also a short term sort of thing, and Roseanne has been coming right up to the border of comments like this for years now. If she was sorry (and it was the ambien) there would not have been so many similar comments OR she would have apologized before this for comments that are out of her character.

In fact, there is no evidence ambien correlates to the violent behaviors suggested in this topic like "hacking their wife to death". That was a desperate defense thought up by a lawyer to save his client without ANY medical evidence, and if you believe that I'm sure you also believe the Twinkie defense and affluenza are both perfectly valid defenses and not crazy Hail Marys throw by a defense attorney because their client was screwed otherwise.

Still though pharmaceutical companies should stay out of stuff like this for a myriad of reasons.

Person X - I dont even have words for this one, other than to reiterate what a sad state of affairs it is when the trashiest reality TV star of all-time has our presidents ear about issues she has zero firsthand knowledge about

Person X is a pretentious d-bag. The presidents have had meetings with all sorts of people - not just senators and foreign heads of state, but celebrities, local interest stories, etc etc. There is no reason to not meet with Kim K., particularly as she's always struck me as someone who is much more intelligent than people give her credit for. She at least understood the social media age better and more quickly than almost anyone, and it pushed her to the empire she's built today. She probably has better business sense than Trump in the modern environment, honestly.

I say this without any irony, btw. I don't get why anyone would possibly care that one person was meeting with the president (or his family) about one issue for one day. This is a better use of his time than half of the stuff Trump does, and I agree with most of her point anyway. So if she has his ear, uh, good.

Person Y (not related much) - In all fairness, a bunch of screaming teenagers had his ear about gun reform not long ago

Person Y is an unequivocal moron, and just a hateful smoldering garbage fire. Nice that he's referring to the Parkland survivors as "screaming teenagers". I'm sure this guy is an expert on literally everything he's ever talked about.

Person Z - I think any celebrity going on about any policy that has zero to do with their lifestyle is silly and self-serving. I can't take a Hollywood idiot seriously, talking about how awful guns are while they are protected by huge fenced in communities and armed guards, either, but I'm supposed to accept that they have a voice on the matter and shut my own mouth.

I mean this is an incredibly lazy and intellectually dishonest argument. You can easily flip that around to "I can't take republican politicians seriously, talking about how great guns are while they make the RNC and all of their big events gun free zones".

I agree with his overall, poorly worded and inarticulately phrased sentiment, however, that everyone has a voice in the political process. Ideally, you'd listen to people with expertise first and foremost. People with experience in this prison system in regards to prisons, scientists in regards to science issues, etc. Like I'm totally fine with Kim Kardashian talking to the president about prison reform. The issue would come in is if this is the only person he talked to, and agreed with her over the opinions of people that have worked in prison, psychologists that have studied inmate rehabilitation, etc etc etc.

Person Z - Again, experience doesn't mean anything. Are only gay celebrities allowed to speak out about gay issues? Are only women who had abortions allowed to speak about abortion issues? Are only female celebrities allowed to discuss female issues?

Experience matters a ton, so I don't know what he's on about. Who is more versed to speak on climate change - a scientist who has studied this for twenty years of his life, or an electrician who read one article about it from a conservative blog? You wouldn't ask the scientists opinion over the electrician if your power went out, so why are we pretending these two opinions hold equal weight?

Again, this isn't to say that Kim Kardashian shouldn't be talking to the president like the first person said, but rather that while it is a good start, I hope he also has talked to actual experts in the field who have experience as well.

So I guess I sort of agree with your final point, overall. Experience matters, but it shouldn't preclude others from speaking up as well.

Won all 95 counties? I didn't know that was even possible for a Democrat outside of New England (where there's only about 10 counties per state, and rural counties often vote blue). That's really amazing.

Yeah, he was absurdly popular in Tennessee. He won his first term largely because of a financial crisis that was caused in part by his predecessor, and the fact the republican he ran against wanted to implement a state income tax and he didn't. He did so well during his first term that he won reelection by a landslide.

Per wikipedia:

Bredesen became governor amid a fiscal crisis, with a predicted state budget shortfall of $800 million. Much of the shortfall was due to TennCare, which was $650 million over budget.[2] Sundquist had hoped to remedy the budget shortfall by implementing an income tax, but this proved wildly unpopular and was never enacted.[14] Bredesen argued that services would have to be cut, saying, "you can't have Massachusetts services and Tennessee taxes."[14] In 2003, he signed a 9% across-the-board spending cut.[2] In 2004, he enacted a series of changes to TennCare, essentially removing 191,000 Medicaid-eligible patients and reducing benefits. By 2006, these changes had reduced the program's cost by more than $500 million.[2] Bredesen used some of the savings to establish a "safety net" for health clinics affected by the cuts. In 2006, he implemented "Cover Tennessee" to cover people with preexisting conditions and the uninsured.[2]

During his first term, Bredesen enacted a number of measures aimed at improving education. In 2003, the state established the Tennessee Lottery to fund college scholarships for the state's high school graduates.[2] Teachers' pay was raised above average salary in the Southeast, and Tennessees pre-kindergarten initiative was expanded to include a statewide program for four-year-olds. Bredesen created the Governors Books from Birth Foundation, a statewide expansion of Dolly Partons Imagination Library that offers free books for children, and in his fourth year, he signed legislation that increased funding for education by $366.5 million, much of which came from savings due to TennCare reform.[2]

To attract new industry, Bredesen worked with the General Assembly to reform Tennessees worker compensation system (changes supported by the business community and opposed by trial lawyers),[2] and invest in programs to help laid-off employees develop new skills. During his tenure, 2,889 companies, including Nissan and International Paper, expanded or moved to Tennessee, bringing more than 104,000 jobs and $12.8 billion in new business investment to the state.[15]

Bredesen meeting with FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate (back)
Bredesen launched a war on methamphetamine abuse, focusing on treatment, prevention and public awareness, with the Governors Meth-Free Tennessee initiative. Criminal penalties and resources for law enforcement were also enhanced as part of this program, which led to a 50% decline in illegal and toxic meth labs.[16] In 2005, Bredesen signed legislation establishing the Tennessee Heritage Conservation Trust Fund, which increased the states land-buying power in hopes of protecting ecologically significant land and conserving or restoring historically significant areas.[17]

In his 2006 reelection campaign, Bredesen brushed off a primary challenge from John Jay Hooker, winning nearly 90% of the vote.[9] In the general election, he defeated state senator Jim Bryson, 1,247,491 votes to 540,853,[9] sweeping all 95 counties and garnering more votes than any gubernatorial candidate in state history.

So Trump going "yeah who is this liberal scrub haha am I right guys" is somewhat disingenuous, but it is entirely possible Trump literally just never heard of him.

People share fake news when it fits the narrative they want to believe. You are very rarely fooled by fake news that works against your beliefs, because you'll want to investigate that first.

This is very true. I have been duped by fake news that told me something I wanted to believe before.

I think that's pretty natural. "Oh this just sounds right!" - something like that you won't look into. That's why you have to be careful on sources, etc, so that you know you're following actual news and not just what you want to hear.

Which, again, is why I found sharing that racist meme so damning.

I guess you were moreso looking for total shootings instead of unarmed. I posted another one with all the information from blunt weapons, to handguns, and etc. Including by race. And also Including cops killed by criminals. I must have posted that one on Reset tho.

Yep, total shootings. That wasn't meant to be a post about excessive force or unjustified police killings, because the vast majority of those were almost certainly justified. I was just curious because Jakyl said 3% seemed high and I wasn't sure if it was or not!

Its also accidentally anti-police if you think about it

In the attempt to illustrate that police kill more whites than blacks, apparently 3% of all white people killed in a year were at the hands of law enforcement.

Thats a problem!

Out of curiosity I checked.

The total number of police related shooting deaths in 2015 was 965 (through December 24 of that year, but eh lets just assume no one was shot and killed that final week): https://www.washingtonpost.com/sf/investigative/2015/12/26/a-year-of-reckoning-police-fatally-shoot-nearly-1000/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.bd8f2db64c8b

The total number of all homicides was 15,696 (https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2015/crime-in-the-u.s.-2015/offenses-known-to-law-enforcement/murder).

I do not believe police related homicides are in there, because that is just "murder". If you check the chart it doesn't list police related as one of the categories, so I'm going to assume no: https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2015/crime-in-the-u.s.-2015/tables/expanded_homicide_data_table_10_murder_circumstances_by_relationship_2015.xls

Which means that there were 965 police related shootings in a total of 16,661 deaths (murder + police shootings). That is roughly 5.8% of homicides, so that number is likely low on that racist chart!

Someone can correct me if I made a mistake in the data somewhere!

I linked a lot of police shooting case numbers recently when I was debating the overblown case of cops killing excessively. I can't remember the exact numbers. I can probably pull them up off of GAF though if it interests you.

Oh, I'm not saying any of these were unjustified. It was just "people killed by cops". I'm not assigning blame for any of them in that post.

That racist meme said "number of whites killed by cops was 3%" which, going by the actual statistics, is probably low! I just wanted to see what the actual numbers were.

Yeah, that statistic seems so mindboggling skewed that it likely was posted from racist origins. Just like the Muslim videos he reposted were of hate group origins also.

Which is why even sharing it indicates racism. Because you would look at that, and as a rational person, would say "there is no way in hell that black people were responsible for 80% of all homicide related deaths against white people". That's bonkers crazy, and the only way you even remotely entertain that notion is if you are racist and afraid of black people. There is no other way you would think that.

"Hey did you know Italians are responsible for 75% of all the arson in the US in a given year?" No one is going to believe a clearly false statistic like that unless you are biased against the group in question.

See, I kind of see where you are coming from on this. But, I also know people who are not racist who get in the same trap of sharing shit they think is legit news. I have told people that stupid Senate shit was wrong that gets shared constantly. And good the amount of Infowars stuff I see on my timeline is wild. I actually thought some of that shit was legit til I looked into it some.

In my experience, people share fake news when it is stuff they believe deep down.

You see liberals share (and believe) fake stuff about conservatives (and not fake news about a cause they supports). You see conservatives share (and believe) fake stuff about liberals (and not fake news about a cause they support). And you see racists share and believe fake stuff about other races. It's because that's what they want to believe.

Someone who believes in global warming isn't going to share a fake story debunking climate change because they'll actually look into it before sharing it. A conservative who supported Bush isn't going to share a fake story saying that Bush said this racist thing on a hot mic because, again, they'd look into it. That's why that particular post is so damning. Someone who isn't racist would know better, or look into it first.

People share fake news when it fits the narrative they want to believe. You are very rarely fooled by fake news that works against your beliefs, because you'll want to investigate that first.

Holy shit how have I not seen this.

Not only is this racist, it is offensive how dumb this is, and mind boggling how dumb (and racist) you would have to be to share this.

At least he deleted that one!

This seemed so impossibly racist and dumb, even by my extremely low expectations, that I thought it had to be fake.

But I googled it:
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2015/nov/23/donald-trump/trump-tweet-blacks-white-homicide-victims/

He literally posted it WHILE RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. I somehow didn't even hear of this probably because of all the other stuff going on.

I love how EVERY "moderate" that displays a completely unreasonable personality always claims that Democrats could get their vote if Dems catered to issues THEY care about, specifically issues that are completely against Democratic ideals. I mean, fuck, I'd vote Republican if Republicans completely inverted their platform to one that wasn't just "we're not Democrats and they're evil, so vote for us", but then that wouldn't be the Republican Party, would it?

I consider myself to be a moderate democrat in that if the Republican candidate had been normal (Kasich or Rubio or Bush) I would have voted them over Sanders.

My top issues are

1. Free Trade
2. A strong social safety net
3. Affordable Healthcare (Im open to private market solutions which I sort of believe Medicare for All to be)
4. Criminal Justice Reform
5. Democratic Reform

It just so happens that the republicans went from being a party I could occasionally support (you could count on me to vote for the moderate in just about every race) to being one that flaunts our justice system, is openly corrupt and seemingly has no interest in protecting societys most vulnerable.

Sanders has the same cuckoo isolationist trade policies as Trump, and I would've actually had to think if it had been Sanders vs. Kasich or someone like that. I'm very liberal socially so if the democrats had [STANDARD DEMOCRATIC HUMAN] I would've been extremely unlikely to vote even a moderate republican like Kasich (primarily for his stance on abortion issues). But I disagreed with like two of the main issues Sanders campaigned on, so I might've made an exception if it was a "normal" Republican.

I would've voted Sanders over Trump in a heartbeat though.
