We can rewrite XY=10X+Y, XZ=10X+Z Multiplying that out and distributing we get (XY)*(XZ)=100X^2+10X(Y+Z)+Y*Z The Y*Z part is just "multiply the #s in the one place" and will be less than 100, so you have no carry over. 10X(Y+Z)=10X(10)=100X, so the first part is 100*(X^2+X)=100(X(X+1)) which is "Multiply the # in the tens spot by whatever comes next", but multiplying by 100 makes it not interact with the Y*Z from before. --- |

Like...engineering degrees have already been pretty devalued. Do you want to do the same thing to STM? Edit: Besides, I enjoy the output of the labor of other degrees. So if you're solely interested in STEM development as a nation, the answer isn't getting more STEM people but rather to keep the ones you have happy. --- |

I went to a good school (an Ivy, many moons ago) and most non-math and science majors even get to calculus. YMMV. It's not really a statement about the quality of a school or anything, but rather the national standards set for math achievement in high school. In addition, the SAT/ACT covers math up but not including calculus (Geometry, Algebra 1-2, Trig) and these tests are developed to test explicitly high school knowledge. Now that doesn't mean that everyone retains that information when they get to college obviously, but that doesn't make it any less remedial. --- |

You had to test out of it or Pass it to take "Algebra" (Algebra II, I think it was called). Which is also remedial. Calculus is the first math that's not explicitly supposed to be covered in High School. Algebra II is pre-calculus. --- |

Medical professionals, cops, etc. should be fired for such things, both for liability reasons as well as the possibility of the actual things that you might be liable for. Stocker at a grocery store, depends on whether fellow employees are uncomfortable. I mean we have the Hatch Act which for some government agencies basically reads "Don't ever say anything political" because of perceptions of bias. I don't see why "Don't ever be racist in a public forum (which includes Facebook in most of these cases)" is that bad to also have. --- |

In recent times, presidents have gotten ho-hum opponents for their second terms because "real" candidates wait for the president to be term limited.
