I read some of the paper. It asserts that the Drake Equation is highly flawed because it only takes 7 parameters into consideration. Its math is too shallow and its based on outdated knowledge of astronomy and chemistry. The author is putting forth a more statistically rigorous version of the Drake equation that is several magnitudes larger. He asserts that using his method makes the Fermi Paradox moot.

Dreams are those weird instances where the memories will disappear soon after waking up unless you make a conscious effort to remember it before getting out of bed. I remember having to do a dream journal for a class, and this is one of the things the teacher recommended we do.

Evidently, remembering dreams are given low priority in the brain, which considers it useless junk in the same way as it does glancing over the ingredient list on the back of a product. You have to kind of "write" them into long term memory soon after you wake up by recalling as much of it as you can before you forget.

What people seem to forget is that it existed multiple Messiah candidates back then, and they all did different kind of magic.
Some of these traits were later added to Jesus, like the story of turning water into wine.
Even the Bible mentions one of the candidates, John the Baptist.

A modern example:

Rabbi Manachem Schneerson who was part of Chabad and the the Lubbavicher movement. He died back in 1991, but certain followers of his believe he was the Messiah. The organization leadership condemns it though to stay in the graces of the rest of the Jewish sects. Some of the more heretical beliefs are that he didn't rely die, but ascended into heaven like the Prophet Elijah and would come again to usher in HaOlam (The world to come). The most heretical one and an extreme minority view among the Messianic Lubbavishers is that he IS the incarnation of God. Look familiar?

Modern Judaism is very different from 1st century Judaism. It evolved over the centuries in response to the religions around it, especially Eastern Christianity and Islam. And it will continue to evolve into the future despite the Conservative and Ultra-Conservative Movements that rise up in reaction to it.

Because the Judeo-Christian God most likely does not exist? I'm agnostic, weak atheist, so I'm biased toward secularism.

I go along with the mainstream that there was a historical Jesus, but he was a regular human being who was crucified. He wasn't supernatural, and most of the theology his followers made that surrounds him was after the fact to explain why he failed as the Jewish Messiah.

How is it okay to tell slaves to be complacent with their situation?

The Roman government saw early Christianity as a threat since a major reason slaves flocked to the movement was because Jesus taught all were equal, both slave and free. They were afraid of slave revolts led by Christian slaves.

The early Church didn't want to suffer a Roman crackdown, so they told all their Christian members who were slaves to obey their masters, to assuage the worries of the Empire. The slaves went along with it because they thought it was a temporary deal and that Jesus would come back in their lifetime to free them all and to rule on Earth as the Messiah.

That's the political reason for its inclusion in Letters. Any moral interpretations were from Christian apologists in the Middle Ages that were made outside of its historical context. It doesn't excuse it, but it does explain the why of that passage.

Appreciate it, I will check it out!

It's a really good series. It forced me to see the Old Testament as a collection of political documents of their day using stories from the past to make what at that time were contemporary arguments.

For example, there were members of the Jewish tribal elite who were against the idea of the Jews bringing back the kingship, so they wrote negative things about Saul, David, and Solomon. The elite who supported the kingship wrote about all their accomplishments.

Another thing was that during Solomon's reign, Israel was extremely affluent and non-Jews were immigrating there and doing business. Solomon wanted the Kingdom to become a melting pot, but there were a group of nationalists who wanted to run all the non-Jews out. They won out and Solomon was demonized in the Tanakh. They tried to tie every failure in his reign to his tolerance of non-Jews.

Then there is the argument that Ruth was written to convince a Jewish audience that Jewish converts could be just as good a Jew as a born one. It was suggested that this was in reaction to Samaritans and non-Israelites that were inhabiting the land during the exile converting during the time of the Deuteronomists.

It's even more simple when you do proper research to "realize" it came from the Sumerians.

Here's the online class lecture series at Yale where I got my information. It's by Christine Hayes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mo-YL-lv3RY&list=PLh9mgdi4rNeyuvTEbD-Ei0JdMUujXfyWi

To paraphrase a good 25 hours, most of the Tanakh was written after the Babylonian exile by the Deuteronomists, who edited their oral history to reflect their own theology at that time. The main question they faced was why their God would break up the ancient tribes of Israel, banish them for over 1000 years, then decide to send Cyrus the Great to repatriate them back to their ancestral homeland. The Tanakh is a terrible source for history, but its a great way to see what were the controversies, concerns, and positions the Jews held around the time of the building of the Temple.

It's simple when you realize God is the after the fact explanation the Israelite's came up with to explain every good or bad thing that happened to them throughout history. Or in certain cases, the excuse for why they did it.

Would it surprise you to know that there are a handful of bat-shit insane small Haredi congregations that believe the Holocaust was God's punishment for the Jews becoming more secular and attempting to assimilate into Gentile society? It's a monstrous belief, but It would certainly fit the Old Testament God's MO.

US Society are hypocrites anyway considering they had no problem with network television showing African women's breasts and African men's genitals on network television back in the day. They even overlooked showing minors nude because "that was their culture". I remember the only reason Chaka Zulu was aired without controversy was because all the nudity involved black South African actresses playing 19th century Zulu characters. Yet network censors would throw a shit fit if it was a white woman.

Personally, I was way more upset with the double standard than the breasts, yet the fact that society didn't disintegrate showed me the top free movement were onto something.

I'd advise anyone who feels they are an incel not to identify or announce themselves as one. It's turned into a label meant to separate you from the rest of society, including those who can help you, and to inculcate you into a self-destructive ideology. It might have been a way for people with shared experiences to commiserate over their problems, but it has since been subverted and twisted by hostile interests who care nothing about you for their own benefit (cough, Vladimir Putin).

You are suffering from loneliness and depression, the things you felt before anyone introduced you to the term "incel." Throwing away the label is a good first step toward feeling better about yourself because you no longer have to tie your suffering to someone else's hatred.

Scientists look down on these other scientists, which discourages their peers from participating. Their reasoning is that they're spending too much time being celebrities on TV and not enough time doing actual science.

Alton Brown is the Neil DeGrasse Tyson of food.

Never sully the great name of Alton Brown like that again

It's kind of amazing it took so long for people to turn on Tyson. I couldn't stand the guy since the early 2000s. He's curator of a museum and therefore an educator to the public on scientific matters, but for years he neglected his responsibilities by excluding Pluto from the planetary display as a personal protest against the IAU. When the IAU decided to reclassify Pluto, he flips and says the decision must be respected and to go against it is to go against the march of science. He then goes on a victory lap in the media mocking anyone who disagreed with the IAU's definition of a planet.

What a hypocrite.

It's not just white guys. Every cult, army, and terrorist group uses sexual frustration and to control and indoctrinate their members. This also works on women.

Back in WW2, the military convinced Hollywood that Tex Avery's Little Red Hot Riding Hood shouldn't be censored under the Hayes code. They argued that the sexual innuendo would further sexually frustrate soldiers and the women left at home to fight harder and work harder in the factories. This was a tactic the military used in conjunction with entertainment media in general (Pin-up models, SO shows, war-romance movies).
