That's the impression you'll get by reading any of the countless tributes of him on the internet, by people who knew him personally and those who didn't.

There are people thanking him on behalf of their entire communities.

He was something different because he wasn't just an actor or musician whose films/music you enjoyed. He affected people differently.

How is his *post a sensational article, insert unrelated photo* gimmick not a gimmick?

I haven't really seen a time when the photo isn't unrelated, but I notice he sometimes does choose photos that can help grab more attention or would become a talking point.

But his flaws in posting style and discussion do not necessarily mean he is a gimmick.

He just did it today. He does it all the time.
