8chan started off as some degenerate, unknown board while good old 4chan was getting all the rage.
But the mods on 4chan, and Moot himself, were getting a bit too strict in the wake of the whole GamerGate shit, and so, in mid-late September 2014 (around the 20th or the 22nd, IIRC), a "mass exodus" of sorts began. Hotwheels, proving himself to be infinitely better than Moot, invited everyone to his imageboard, a bastion of free speech. And people came, making it explode in popularity.

The free-speech thing had been there before, and combined with users' ability to make their own boards, did lead to questionable moments, but there were certainly worse chans for that (whose name escapes me, because it's been 3 and a half years at this point). If it violated US law, he'd look into it, but otherwise, it stayed. That was the rule.

Then Moot retired, the guy behind 2chan took over, and moderation on 4chan went back to being more lax so over time 8chan kind of died off. I'm sure Hotwheels retiring also affected its popularity somehow, but I'm not sure how much.
