it is the case, because society thinks of a person shooting up a school when you say "school shooting". you can call it whatever you want, but you're going to be confusing people if you equate shootings that happen on campus to "school shootings".

you can limit the definition personally if you want.

if a shooting happens on school grounds it's a school shooting. semantics arguments don't change the fact that there is literally no reason to have a gun at school.

It does matter because if there is no motive to shoot student/teachers, then you shouldn't really say it's a "school shooting". When you say "school shooting" you're implying that someone has entered a campus with the purpose of shooting at classmates/teachers. If a student was shot trying to rob his classmate, would you call that a "school shooting" also? I guess you could but you'd be needlessly confusing a lot of people.

no you're trying to pigeonhole "school shooting" into one definition when that isn't the case.

Guns / school shooting issues don't really play into this story. Could just as easily have been a kid knifing his parents when they came in the room, poisoning them when they got home, etc. He was going to off his parents - he wasn't going to shoot up the school.

what does it matter if he killed students or not? it happened on a school campus.

no you wouldn't call that a school shooting because it didn't happen on school grounds.

I find it funny when people compare us to "the rest of the developed world" in situations like this... because it's totally fair to compare an almost completely homogenous country the size of one US state with less than 10 million people to a country with over 400 million people from all parts of the world

there's 323 million people in the us

and we have universal laws already that apply to every single person in this country.
