Robert Van Hook, who fatally stabbed David Self in 1985 in Cincinnati and then attempted a gay panic defense, was executed by lethal injection on Wednesday by the state of Ohio.

CBS News reported: The family of victim David Self supported the execution, telling the parole board last month that he is missed every day. Selfs sister, Janet Self, said her brother had been reduced over the years to a gay man in a bar, when he in fact he was so much more. Authorities say Van Hook met Self at the Subway Bar in downtown Cincinnati on Feb. 18, 1985. After a couple of hours, they went to Selfs apartment where Van Hook choked the 25-year-old Self to unconsciousness, stabbed him multiple times in the neck and then cut his abdomen open and stabbed his internal organs, according to court records. Van Hook stole a leather jacket and necklaces before fleeing, records say.

This is exactly why we broke away from that God-forsaken country.

Also, what's with that mayor's name? That doesn't sound very English to me. I wonder why he's biased against the leader of the free world.

This is the same mayor that says that terror attacks are now part and parcel of the times and people will just have to get used to it.

Technically he said that being prepared for a terrorist attack is part and parcel of living in a city. It's not the same as saying attacks themselves are part and parcel, but functionally the results are the same. His actual quote:
Part and parcel of living in a great global city is youve got to be prepared for these things, youve got to be vigilant, youve got to support the police doing an incredibly hard job. We must never accept terrorists being successful, we must never accept that terrorists can destroy our life or destroy the way we lead our lives.

Stop ruining the narrative! It's all they have.

See, this is where the sensationalism is getting to you. "Every death is a tragedy," yeah, yeah. People die, and they do it every day. It's just part of living. Let's look at the numbers.

According to WaPo, 1,102 people were killed in "mass shootings" combined over the last 52 years.

According to the FBI, 1,604 people were killed by knives and cutting instruments...in 2016

5,051 people...died from choking in 2015

I don't want to pay for you.

that's literally the entire premise behind insurance.

Except there are certain people that you would reasonably want to keep out because they'll be gauranteed to cost way more than they'll contribute. How would you feel if your car insurance company was forced to start insuring people with a history of reckless driving? Being forced to cover people with preexising conditions is like being forced to invite to that guy to your gatherings who eats and drinks the most but basically never brings any food or drinks himself.

Being a reckless driver (choice) is not even close to being the same as being sick (not a choice).

Absolutely awful comparison.

Why does that matter? Why does the fact that some was put into a bad situation by misfortune (as opposed to choice) all of sudden make it okay to force the rest of society to pay for them?

If it's about money, then you should be looking at better systems where it's free at the point of contact and costs less (US spend per person is about 5 times as much as UK spend per person).

After all, it's about money isn't it to you?

It's about not being forced to pay for others. You shouldn't be forced to pay for someone else no matter how expensive or inexpensive their care may be.

If someone had a life threatening condition that only cost a few dollars to treat, it would still be wrong to force the rest of society to pay for it.

Stop paying taxes then.

Great topic.

There's plenty of examples. Cops can raid houses without warrants looking for "illegal" knives, and will take pretty much whatever they want. A few weeks ago, London police tweeted out a picture of the "dangerous weapons" they confiscated from a no-knock raid on an apartment building. It included a butter knife, a couple of screwdrivers, and a pair of pliers.

These are "dangerous and deadly weapons" we need to get off the streets, apparently.
