fire arrows make glinthawks obsolete

i saved ropecaster ammo on the real big machines. only way i found anything the size of a bellowback and up to be manageable.

iirc, tearblast arrows were op when the game came out. got nerfed by the time i played the game. still incredibly useful against the bigger enemies that have a lot of armor!

since i first beat ceaseless discharge many many years ago dodging his arm slam and attacking it over and over, i've always just done the "trick" method of killing him because it's much faster and not tedious unlike fighting him "legit". he's never been a highlight after the first time, so i prefer to get it over with asap.

i actually had the worst bug happen to me when i was at the very last area on my first playthrough of the remastered version.

got invaded by a darkmoon blade. i won, of course, but as i was making my way down the spiral staircase to the boss door, the sound cue for beating a boss suddenly played. ending cutscene started, credits, then i'm in ng+. if that had happened to me on my actual first time playing the game, i would have been livid! never encountered that glitch in the five times i beat the original on ps3.

what sucked even more was that i did all of the dlc right before that happened, so the save i had uploaded to the cloud was the one before i started the dlc. i just started a new character instead.

another minor glitch is when you invade someone in anor londo and that player makes it to the optional boss, you'll get the trophy for it if you haven't done it in your own world.

also, you only need to get up to ng++ to platinum the game! not too hard, actually. i got it on ps3 so i don't think i'll be doing it again for the remaster.

ha yeah that part was also pretty rough for me the first time i played through the game.

zero problems on my last four runs.

it's a highlight in the design intentionality of the enemy placement in the series. it feels impossible when you don't know what to do. the moment you figure it out, there's very little challenge left.

this is your first time through the game, yes? if so, then yeah, good thing you didn't get the master key. might end up getting lost unlocking doors that you should save for later!

can't go wrong with vit and end, for sure. strength for the big, slow weapons. dex for the fast, light weapons. generally speaking of course, since there are exceptions to the typical str/dex weapon.

don't bother with resistance.

intelligence for magic spells, faith for miracles

the game doesn't tell you how to get more uses out of your estus flask, so i won't feel bad about just telling you straight up how to do it.

use a humanity item when you're next to a bonfire. might as well use two right away. you should see 02 on the top left corner next to your health and stamina.

sit next to a bonfire. choose "reverse hollowing". your zombie character should look human afterward. then choose "kindle". that should bring up the number of estus flask uses to 10 whenever you sit on that particular bonfire you just kindled.

so glad death stranding didn't turn into another 3rd person stealth-action hybrid like the other big 3 ps4 games. i like those too, no question, but yeah, there is homogeneity in the big, showy blockbuster titles, and at least death stranding is different!

not the most exciting trailer, but i'm even more intrigued with how it'll play. it'd be a super bold move on kojima to make a quieter, more adventure like video game with the money and the marketing sony is giving it!

been playing the remaster. past o&s. joined the darkwraiths. been doing a lot of invading since sen's fortress. never got to do much of it when i first played so it's been fun (sometimes) hunting people all over.

but jesus christ so much about pvp can be frustrating with all the backstab nonsense. didn't get too deep into the pvp in the original version since i played it pretty late. now i understand why a lot of people hated it. lagstabs, chain backstabs, clipping into player models for backstabs, etc. it looks so dumb and feels awful. everything about the backstab mechanic in pvp is just broken and janky. the later games really improved on that aspect.

"fighting" players who clearly know how to exploit the brokenness of it just isn't fun.

blighttown at 60fps is great without ruining any of the tension. still died the most in that area from falling after getting cornered and knocked back. it's great. haha.

got the platinum trophy for god of war a couple of weeks back. beat the story again a week after. it's a very good aaa blockbuster video game-ass video game. super satisfying gameplay loop, surprising depth in combat, hype af moments, doesn't really have anything new or meaningful to say.

played an hour of all our asias, but it didn't really grab me and haven't gone back to it yet. i know i only have about another hour left, so i'll finish it this weekend.

took part in the dark souls remastered network test. only played the original on ps3 with its sub 30fps and muddy textures. looks good! but goddamn that game is slow. played through all of bloodborne couple of months back, so dark souls' slowness is just made all the more apparent.

also, dueling in that game is just broken and silly. didn't do much of it in the original version, but i did my fair share in dark souls 3 and bloodborne. it's exciting in those games, but dark souls 1 dueling is basically backstab fishing. it's made all the more worse with the inherent lag in these games with the player models strafing into one another looking for backstabs. i'm not saying anything new about this, since it's been the case 7 years ago, but yeah, the network test was a stark reminder for me to just not bother with dueling when the full game comes out. i'll still welcome invasions and will do some invading myself, because the cat and mouse aspect of pvp can still be surprising. just no fight clubs or "honorable" duels for me.

haven't played a game since the weekend of that test though! don't have anything else on my plate. only have the dark souls remaster to look forward to in the immediate future.

i enjoyed this game quite a bit. it just kept going and going to the point that i only felt relief when i finally beat it for real.

got the season pass for it too thinking i was gonna love it because i adore the soulsborne games. played the first couple of missions of the first dlc and found them to be brutally tough, too tough for my already dwindling patience for the game. didn't continue with the dlc and haven't touched the game since.

there's something special about the combat for sure. it's enough of a solid foundation that i'm still interested in a sequel. it just has to have either a more compact campaign or more enemy variety and more interesting levels to justify a 70-80 hour story.

i used the odachi, a dlc weapon, as my main, with the kusarigama as my second, for most of the game. dabbled with the axe and sword as well. don't sleep on the option to deplete enemies' stamina!

if you aren't going for the platinum and you already completed the story, there's no point in going through niflheim or muspelheim for that matter.

i enjoyed my time in both realms, but yeah, the grind in niflheim got to me a bit near the end even though i was getting 7-8k mist echoes a run. got into a comfortable loop of managing cooldowns for my buffed up runic attacks that i was finishing most encounters quickly through monstrous instant damage. the mist became a non-issue over halfway through unlocking every chest and realm tear.

didn't bother me too much, but i definitely understand why the place turns off a lot of players.

if there were a ng+ that also allowed switching to gmgow difficulty, i'd totally give it a shot. just can't be arsed to get through the opening hours with the damage sponge enemies that kill you in 2-3 hits with your extremely limited moveset.

i also can't imagine resurrection stones not working when you get VALHALLA'D as a glitch that passed through the qa process of a game of this magnitude. i'm 99.99% sure that's intentional.

so yeah i got the platinum for the game five days ago, and i'm actually midway through another playthrough. decided to replay it anyway to see if the pacing and narrative problems that some people bring up affect me as much.

i actually appreciate more the craft in storytelling for one plot thread (baldur and freya's relationship), seeing the small things that affirm that particular climax.

nothing super glaring so far in the pacing, but i do still have a ways to go before the last quarter, which is the part that gets most of the complaints regarding the pacing.

if there is one thing that i definitely missed in the early game, it's just the lack of combat options. makes me wish for a new game plus. of course, i get why the moveset is as basic as it is in the beginning. it took me about 3-5 hours into the game the first time before i got comfortable enough with the combat. maybe some of the moves could have been there from the start though, like the running attacks and the axe cleave?

going back to the narrative, i do empathize with the more big picture problem critics have with it. the story sony santa monica decided to tell was done well enough. it's just that it falls into the same trappings of these kinds of stories. the typical idea of masculinity isn't really challenged in a meaningful way, and it doesn't make for good representation of women. it's nowhere near straight-up juvenile misogynist like in the previous games, but it still doesn't do much for positive, forward-thinking depictions of women. faye is mythologized to be this perfect warrior/sage/saint, and i cannot for the life of me fathom how she ever got into a relationship with kratos and had a kid with him. maybe that's the one thing that makes her seem like a real person - her downright atrocious taste in men, which i say as a joke but even then if taken on face value also doesn't speak kindly for women's representation! freya is just overburdened as the one on-screen female character. there are all these male characters showing a range of personalities and arcs, and there's the one woman who becomes a trope in the end. i don't find it off-puttingly offensive, but it is disappointing.

i also take issue with the game's gestures at "being better" in regard to kratos' violent past. it's just so pg-13 "mature" action fiction to say violence should be the last option while glorifying violence 90% of the time. yes, it's hard to ignore commenting on it when the game is telling a father and son story framed in a much more grounded way, but i can't help but roll my eyes when games try to moralize on that front and still paint protagonists who kill hundreds as heroic all the while making violence feel viscerally satisfying. why even bother when you're not really saying anything new or profound about those conflicting emotions?!

these failings have only made me think more fondly of the last of us. now there's a big-budget sad dad video game that interrogates paternal masculinity and violence without having that disconnect in story and gameplay.

it's probably easier for me to look past those flaws anyway because hey i'm a dude and a person who has been playing video games since childhood without the highest expectations for aaa stories, but yeah, despite my problems with the narrative, i still think god of war is an enormously fun time. the combat really is something special, the exploration loop is rewarding, mimir is the perfect addition to the kratos/atreus dynamic, brok and sindri are incredibly charming, the small moments with kratos and atreus are genuine and heartfelt, the big moments are exhilarating and fist-pumping, the nods to the past games are succinct and impactful, and the valkryie fights are just the best.

i'm going to finish it again, and i will likely still feel positively about it in the future. here's hoping the sequels are better with women????

i just beat the game

it is very good, maybe even great. it's the perfect example of a gigantic, super polished AAA game that does most things super well, taking some of the best parts of past gigantic, super polished AAA games. it's not revelatory, and there are big elements in the story that don't sit well with me. i am definitely looking forward to where sony santa monica goes after this. already kinda hankering for some story dlc, even after doing almost everything in the game. will definitely get the platinum with how close i am.

also yes switching the difficulty to hard right after i last posted here was a good decision. i'd even say that it felt so natural, that the difficulty should scale like it did with my choice to bump up it up to "give me a challenge" at that point in the game. had i stuck with the default mode, i don't think i would be as enamored with the combat, which is 100% the best single thing in the game. i don't think i would have appreciated the depth and the customization that i had to explore, because i would have probably just steamrolled the rest of the game without paying any mind to any of those things.

i might try give me god of war difficulty because of how much i like this game, but i'm afraid to go back to the start with none of the abilities and equipment that i've put so much time acquiring (and being so intrinsically tied to my love of the combat) then having to deal with way more powerful enemies.

icon, i think the game you're looking for in odyssey can be found in the challenge rooms that are akin to sunshine's! too bad most of the best ones are in the post-game.

i've only played this and 3d world of the 3d mario games, but the experiences i've had with both are just so vastly different that i can't really compare. played odyssey solo and 3d world with friends from start to finish.

but having seen all of steal my sunshine, i can say with certainty that super mario sunshine is the worst 3d mario game.

anyway, god of war! seems like i'm the only one here that has it? literally just got it and downloading the day 1 patch as i type this. i'm hoping it's as good as the reviews say, but i'm also glad i've tempered my expectations with the gow talk on the bombcast and waypoint radio.

real pretty game that never really has any highs and doesn't land any of its emotional punches because i barely knew any of the characters.

a good deal of the puzzles also felt rote. like if you've played a bunch of puzzle games before, you know exactly what to do.

started invisible inc. digging it! security level increasing every turn is a brilliant design choice that i can only assume will make for super intense missions later on.

it's a strategy game originally made for pc so obviously the ui can be a bit hard to parse, but it's manageable with a controller so far.

That ending is a major reason as to why I love the game so much. It makes perfect sense given everything that happened while also being audacious in how its presented and its direction in context to how other AAA games' wrap up their stories. It's devastating in its humanity, in its depiction of the lengths that people go to just to not be alone, how that manifests in the smallest of actions, and how its reflected in the tiniest motions in body language.

And of course I'm both super skeptical and hopeful of where the sequel takes the narrative.
