As sad as that is, I can't help but feel sorry for the kid.

I mean, he did something stupid and reckless. I think we've all done things like that as teenagers, whether its from peer pressure or trying to be cool.

Are walking in a group, one of them spots you behind them, talks to the others, and then sure enough a few moments later they're all sneaking in looks back at you?

I just experienced this. It made me kinda uncomfortable, like I was being judged, and I couldn't even tell whether it was negatively or positively. I'm a fairly decent looking guy, but maybe not typically handsome (I'm pale rather than tan, I have longer hair, and I'm not super muscular or anything like that, but I have a nice face I think).

I kinda felt paranoid they thought I was following them or something? But I was stuck walking behind them on the sidewalk so, it's not like I could've went anywhere else.

you are misunderstanding the sequence of events here. specifically the part, "He was giving his personal opinion and you attacked him on a personal level." that's not how it happened. what happened was "He was asking for peoples' personal opinions on authors, and then shitting all over both the peoples' opinions and the authors themselves, and boasting about his own talent and superiority on a personal level, and then you attacked him on a personal level."

Someone is sentenced to life and later evidence comes to light that exonerates them. They can be released and given reparations. It's not exactly fair, but it's a start.

Someone is sentenced to the death penalty and dies. Later evidence comes to light that exonerates them. You can't bring them back. They suffered injustice to the highest degree, and it was done by the state we entrust to protect our welfare.

Some people commit horrible crimes and don't deserve life. I wholeheartedly agree. But we cannot stoop to their level. Life in prison without parole effectively takes the danger out of society. It is cheaper than the death penalty given all the appeals process, and one ought not to advocate for a more streamlined process because that necessarily will increase that type I error rate (i.e., more innocents killed by accident).

But I won't let my blood lust get in the way and take a handful of innocent deaths as acceptable toward the goal of making sure some people get what they deserve. A life sentence serves the same role.
