The MCU was making 2 movies per year up until last year. Last year they pushed it up to 3 movies per year.

Last year we got GOTG2, Spider-Man Homecoming, and Thor Ragnarok.

This year we got Black Panther, Infinity War, and Ant-Man & The Wasp.

Next year will be Captain Marvel, Avengers 4, and Spider-Man Far From Home.

I think that is a major factor. There are simply many more TV shows today than there was in 1990 when The Simpsons first started. A lot more TV shows means it is much more difficult for any one of them to stand out head and shoulders above the rest.

What? Network TV isn't dying, and nobody has ever said that it is dying.

You're probably thinking of cable. Cable providers like Comcast are dying because more and more people are choosing not to subscribe to cable.

Network TV isn't dying though. A lot of "cable cutters" still watch network TV through an antenna or through streaming options such as Hulu and Sling TV.

20th Century Fox Television is reportedly developing the new take on Buffy, which will center on a younger version of the titular character portrayed by Sarah Michelle-Gellar on the 97 series, now played by a black actor.

A younger version? Buffy was a 15 year old sophomore in the first season of the original series. She graduated high school at the end of season 3 and then went to college in season 4.

Why would you want to go younger than that? Does anyone really want to see a Slayer in elementary school?

Also, why recast her as black? The original series already had a black Slayer with Kendra who was introduced in season 2. So the original series already did have a diverse cast.

I can't imagine this Buffy remake will actually happen once Disney's purchase of Fox is finalized. Disney isn't dumb enough to do shit like this.

That story is obviously fake for two obvious reasons.

1) He died months ago, but you're just now cleaning out his desk? That makes no sense.

2) IT would have known that he was downloading porn and done something about it. IT knows everything you do with your work computer. Some smaller companies may not have an IT department, but you did say you have an HR department. Any company large enough to have an HR almost certainly has an IT too.

I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I prefer the medieval knight, black/white mage setting of IV and IX more than the steampunk setting of VI and VII.

Yeah, discs exploding has nothing to do with disc rot.

My disc exploded because it was spinning too fast in the CD-drive. This does happen, although it is rare. Mythbusters even did an episode about this and proved that it can happen.

Disc rot is real too, and there are numerous stories and articles about it. I guess some people just want to live in denial because ignorance is bliss though.

Things do break, no matter how well you take care of them. To imply that I don't take care of my discs is quite frankly rather insulting. I take very good care of my discs.

tbh, googled it to learn a bit more and discovered that DVDs have a projected 20-200 lifespan. I'm still a little surprised that they can wear at all, considering that they require physical contact to be read (well, other than the part being spun)

20-200 year lifespan is so laughably broad. It's like saying the human lifespan is 10-100 years.

I don't even know how they could come up with a 200 lifespan since DVDs haven't been around anywhere close to that. The oldest DVDs are like 30 years old, so how could you possibly know that they may last another 170 years? Do they have a time machine that allows them to go 200 years in the future to confirm that there will still be working DVDs 200 years from now?

Regarding the physical contact part of your post, the layers of DVDs are held together by glue. Glue is going to deteriorate over time regardless of whether or not you actually use the DVD. I really doubt there is any glue in the world that is going to hold together for 200 years. That would be some super strong glue. lol

Thinking about this in reverse, 200 years ago was the year 1818. Is there anything built in 1818 that still works today?

Bah, you're a looney. Disc rot is a fairy tale used to scare people into buying inferior digital goods. I have carts that are 30 years old and disc games nearing 20. Plenty of CD's too. None of them are going bad. While I agree nothing lasts forever, these items with minimal care are going to last for decades.

Disc rot is not a fairy tale at all. Just because it has not happened to you doesn't mean it can't or won't happen. That's like saying cancer is a fairy tale because you have never had cancer.

How often do you actually check all your discs? I do mean ALL of them. Most people with really old discs don't check them all that often and don't check them all either. If you have 1,000+ discs, it's fairly safe to bet that at least a few of them will have rotted and you may not even know if since you haven't checked them in years.

Some of the faster CD drives of years gone by could actually reach (or totally obliterate, in some cases) the physical limitations of the disc.

I remember one time in the early 2000s I was playing a PC game, and all of a sudden I heard this really loud explosion. It seriously sounded like a bomb going off it was so loud. I literally even got up and looked out the window to see if something had happened outside.

Then my game stopped working and said to insert the disc. I was like, "What? The disc is already in the drive." I opened the drive, and the disc had literally exploded into a million pieces.

I only ever had that happen that one time, but I remember it being a holy shit moment because I seriously thought a bomb had gone off outside. It was just my CD exploding in the drive though. That was so crazy.

It's not as simple as taking care of your stuff. "DVD rot" (and before that was "CD rot") is a real thing. Basically the glue that holds the layers of the DVD together will erode over time, and eventually the DVD becomes unplayable. It doesn't matter how well you take care of your DVD, you cannot stop the glue from eroding over time. I take care of my DVDs, and I still have had some that have died due to DVD rot.

It's not a matter of if. It's a matter of when. Nothing lasts forever. Everything dies. Even DVDs.

TopicDo you ever play the lottery?
rogerskg1979
07/15/18 11:05:46 AM

There is a way to 100% guarantee that you will win the lottery. The way to guarantee a win is to buy every possible combination of numbers.

The odds of winning the lottery are 1 in 292 million because there are 292 million possible combinations. So you would need to buy 292 million tickets. At $2 per ticket, you would need $584 million to buy them all.

Therefore, you would only have a net gain in winnings if the lottery is more than $584 million. Actually it needs to be significantly more than $584 million since you will have to pay taxes and such on the winnings. Lottery winnings are also taxed at the highest percentage. So, I'm not sure of the exact calculation, but I would guess that the lottery would need to be around $800-$900 million to actually have a net gain.

Also, consider the possibility that there may be another winner besides you. That does happen sometimes. You would have to split the winnings with the other person. So your $900 million actually becomes $450 million and you lost money.

Another thing to consider is just how impractical it would be to handle and sort 292 million tickets. That's a LOT of tickets, and you would need to come up with some way to practically sort through them.

If you don't want to go to a traditional university, then why not go to a trade school? Trades like plumber, electrician, carpenter, HVAC, etc are very good careers that pay good salaries.

You aren't likely going to find a good job that doesn't require a degree and/or certifications. Trade school is a very good alternative for people who don't want to go to a traditional university.

If you absolutely don't want to get a degree or certifications, then joining the armed forces is probably your next best bet. They pay very well too, and you can get experience there that can lead to other careers later on.

Almost all unskilled labor jobs suck. It's not just retail and restaurant jobs that suck. Almost all unskilled labor jobs suck. Even something like a warehouse job isn't a very good job. Many warehouses aren't air conditioned, so it will get hot as hell in there. It's also very hard manual labor, much more so than working at retail or restaurants. If you can't handle a retail job, then you're certainly not going to be able to handle a warehouse job either.

You cant really make a direct comparison between the two

Im sure neither is easy

This

I have worked both types of jobs. I worked fast food during high school and the freshman year of college. Now I am an accountant.

Fast food is not difficult really. It's just physically demanding because you have to be fast enough to keep up with the orders. Management is also usually pretty strict in fast food type jobs. You have to deal with rude customers constantly, many of which don't understand what its like to actually work in fast food. You're on your feet constantly, so your legs and feet get really tired by the end of the day.

An office job is nowhere near as physically demanding, but it can be mentally exhausting depending on what it is you do. As an accountant, I am staring at numbers on spreadsheets all day long, and that can indeed be mentally exhausting. I don't have nearly as much interaction with customers as I did working in fast food, and the customers generally aren't as rude to an accountant as they are to a fast food employee. Management is generally more laid back in an office setting. If i need to leave work to do something in the middle of the day, management generally allows me to do that. A fast food manager would NEVER allow fast food employees to do something like that. As long as I get my work done on time, then management really doesn't care if I need to leave.

Another big positive about an office job is that most of them can be worked from home. I generally prefer to work in the office so I can interact with my co-workers easier, but if i am sick or if there is bad weather or whatever, then I can work from home. You can't do that with a manual labor job like fast food. In fact, last year I broke my ankle, so I worked from home for three weeks. If I worked fast food, then I would have simply had to take three weeks off work period and not get paid. With an office job, I was still able to keep working and keep getting a paycheck.

Video and audio are two very different things that operate independently of each other. Increasing the quality of one has no effect on the other.

It's basically why even TVs with the best video quality still have poor audio quality. You need a separate audio system to get the best audio quality because TVs are focused primarily on video, not audio.

Don't let the nostalgia googles fool you.

TV back then was heavily sanitized and not an accurate portrayal of real life at all. Real life was not very good... unless you were a heterosexual white male. If you were any other race, gender, or sexual orientation, life was not that pleasant at all. Even white women were treated like shit back in the 60s. The TV show Man Men is a much more accurate portrayal of life in the 60s than Andy Griffith is. Life today is much better than life in the 60s.
