I am not too far into the game, but so far the story of God of War feels like a fanfiction.

What kind of bugs me about Kratos in GOW4 is that the writers are clearly trying to add this element of nuance and drama to his character, but the original Kratos for the last 13 years has been very dumb & one-dimensional (in the best way possible).

Now the game expects me to feel all emotional about the character, care about his relationships, and believe that he learned some kind of lessons from the past games where you are just ripping dudes' heads off.

I find it really fucking hard to care about the character and get into it because the nuance feels so contrived. Hopefully that changes in the next few hours I play but so far this is the weakest point of the game imo

Kratos always had his family as his emotional core.

I don't get the people who act like he was some emotionless killing machine. The reason he snapped is because he blames the Gods for losing his family and everything he loved. He wasn't even allowed to die.

Trying to avoid all of the consequences and starting again with a new family seems like a logical continuation from GOW3.

People think that about him because hes been an emotionless killing machine from the start. He was fine murdering innocents up until some of them ended up being his family, and then went on an even worse murderous rampage for several more games before Sony decided to do a 180 to try and cash in on the Last of Us template again. I mean this dude should not be allowed anywhere near that kid let alone get a shot at redemption, at least Last of Us realized Joel was kind of an asshole.

Kratos is one of the most frustratingly stupid characters in all of video games. It's neat that the new game is taking steps to make him more layered and not ANGRY BAD DECISION MACHINE

The fact that he actually stood up there and tried to argue against gun laws by saying, "Let's not chase every loophole" is asinine. Like, that's literally how laws work. It's a process of introduction and iteration. You don't just shut down when people find a loophole, you revise the law to include it and keep going.

I thought it was pretty impressive that Ryan Coogler was able to distill an MLK vs. Malcolm X-esque conflict into a digestible plot for general audiences while working within a pretty formulaic Marvel Studios framework. The fact that Killmonger exists as a villain with the motivation that he has is kind of incredible in a movie of this size.
