Probably closer to 55%. He should just about double Mega Man X, who'd put Ryu in a distant but still oddly respectable third. Something like 54/27/19 sounds reasonable to me.

But yeah, this is still the strongest any entrant has ever been in a contest match. Link would never be able to sniff 60 here, let alone double both entrants.

I'd prefer early 2020 because GotD is the contest I'm most excited about, so I'd want it as early as possible. I don't think it would hurt any games released in 2019, as a decreased playrate will likely be counterbalanced by increased hype due to their recency.

Melee/FFX might still be the biggest picture mismatch of all time. Throw the FFX party up there (perhaps coincidentally leave off Wakka and Kimahri) and it may have gotten the job done.

And to bring it back to the last topic a bit, I think it's a bit ambitious to claim that Melee/Brawl cost FFX the title. I think FFX could have gotten to the finals had Melee put an end to Brawl's run (and probably would be the favorite to do so), but it would still need to face a beloved Nintendo game in those finals, and this immediately after eking by another big Nintendo game and galvanizing that fanbase.

It's hard to remember now, but Sephiroth was clutch as fuck in the old 1v1 days. Barely dropping a match to Snake WITH CLOUD IN THE POLL was seen as a surprising disappointment for him. He channeled some of that old spirit against Missingno.

Do you mean the Gamespot Villains contest with the Darth Vader vs. Kerrigan final? I'm pretty sure that one took place years after Kerrigan's first match on GameFAQs. The hype for Kerrigan, IIRC, was almost entirely fueled by Starcraft's run the year prior.

At this point, I think Cloud might be aided from a strange "Nintendo apathy" at the tail end of contests. When it's clear that Link is on cruise control and Samus/Mario/AND NOW ZELDA are ready to wreck everything else, it's like... more acceptable or something to toss in a vote for Cloud. I'd probably favor Mario to edge him out in a hypothetical Round 2 match, but when it's Match #148 and Link is guaranteed the title, Cloud is a more appealing option.

The 2004 games contest was the first time we saw how far SFF could extend, especially in Nintendo matches. The only notable SFF beatdown in 2002-03 (off the top of my head) was Mario/DK.

I think FFVII wound up... not bad this year, all things considered. Sephiroth was bound to lose against Mario, and the way things were looking in Rounds 1-2, Fox was becoming a favorite to beat Aeris. The fact that she fended him off (without much trouble) during the same day Zelda was anchoring the Nintendo fanbase actually looked impressive to me. And it's become lost in the fray a bit, but Tifa was a star of the contest contender. She killed Mewtwo and beat two really strong guys to win her division. She remains a Top 10 contender and can possibly beat Sonic, Mega Man, or Crono.

Sephiroth and Vincent are clearly a step down, but we know where Vincent's run would end (and he didn't look too bad against Auron). Seph's final week is what really puts a damper on FFVII, but that was unique to him and shouldn't be used as evidence against his whole game - especially since the second and more damning loss came against someone from that same game. I've argued this before, but as the only villain in these contests who is anywhere near his protagonist in popularity (Kefka being the notable exception), Seph was always an anomaly and was bound to drop before the main heroes of FFVII did.

As for Cloud... he came through for me! I wound up just outside the Top 50 this year despite only calling 4/8 division winners, and it was all because I banked on him making the grand finals through losers. My motto is if it's 1v1, Cloud gets it done.

I don't think there's a huge number of matches that can really vie for #1. Maybe I'm missing something big, but IMO it's between Mario/Cloud 2002, Link/Cloud 2003, and the L-Block final.

Transformation Duration is the attached skill of the Prince of Sable Primary Spirit (Legend), but I haven't seen it as a Support Spirit yet. Just wanna know what to be on the lookout for.

Considering how early she shows up in the game with her stats level, and has that completely absurd defense bonus combining with the time limit, probably not a whole lot.

I managed it with Pikachu on my second try after failing with Snake for at least a dozen. I can't remember the exact strats I used, but I think Pika's a decent counter because the AI didn't seem quite as effective against him.

I've heard that it's a trickier legal tightrope to work with Square because you need the permission of several different people involved with the old games. Who knows what's accurate and what isn't, but I've been really enjoying watching random Spirits pop up during the game, so the complete absence of FF material is the biggest bummer so far.

Assuming that "Enhanced" Spirits are only available via the actual leveling up (meaning you can't randomly find them on the Spirit Board), then Metal Face can only be obtained by taking another Spirit to 99. It only has one slot, but it makes up for that with 12k+ base attack at Level 99 and an incredible built-in effect which allows you start a fight both Metal AND Giant. You can wreck most fights when you're that OP for the first few seconds.

I traded in some sleep to power through World of Light over the past few days; just finished some hours ago. That was way funner than the Subspace Emissary; I especially got a nostalgia-kick out of their handling of Castlevania, Street Fighter, Donkey Kong Country, and Zelda. Excellent fanservice all around.

Regarding Spirit battles, I did have trouble with Wily and The Boss, but I never got too frustrated since you could retry immediately with no penalty. Giga Mac seemed like it would be the death of me until I thought to cheese it by standing at the very edge of the stage and baiting a throw. I also cheesed Pauline by running after Peach until her AI killed her off for me.

Spirit Board fights are way more intense since you need to waste valuable resources for rematches, and even if you win, more resources need to be spent for a better shot at getting the damn Spirit. Because of that, I feel Liquid Snake, who I just failed against like five times before giving up, was my toughest fight yet. I couldn't justify spending any more Retries.

Also, did anyone else brute force their way through many fights with the Metal Face Spirit? Strategy be damned with that thing.

Sephiroth was always way too strong for a villain. He's much closer to his game/series protagonist in strength than any other villain apart from maybe Kefka. It kinda makes sense that he'd continually drop over the years, as a villain gains popularity from the cool stuff they do in a game, and that cool stuff is bound to be forgotten over time. Heroes lose popularity less quickly.
