***'Scary Stories' spoilers***

It was a decent Halloween-themed, intersecting anthology type-movie - like Trick 'r Treat, though not as clever in its storytelling. It's cool that they wanted to stay true to the art sytle of the books - the jump to 3D almost works but looks cartoonish at times. It also reminded me of Halloween Tree a little, with kids uniting on Halloween to stop some awful thing from happening.

If they hadn't gone with the cheap 'talk the ghost off the ledge' happy ending, or if they had a better overarching story, I think I would have been more into it. They also seemed to be confused about the tone of the movie and the demographic it was for - like one minute you've got the female lead being super dramatic and in terror, and the next you have their goofy Shaggy-type friend still making weird jokes and giving awkward line-readings. It was bizarre.

Also had the amazing one-liner: "You don't read this book....this book reads you."

7/10

EDIT - OH and the last 30 seconds so obviously set it up for a sequel that they must already have one planned. Felt forced to me.

Hmmmm yeah the cons listed don't really bother me at all. I thought it was a genius journey that has that rare movie moment early on where you think "holy shit, that was just the intro??"

It covers so much ground and has literally about 10 classic set pieces. And yeah, it's surprisingly funny. It's almost always being either horrifying or funny at all times, which is so great.

I liken it to a Wicker Man that cranks the weirdness up to 11.

Midsommar definitely delivers. It felt like one of those dreams you have that seems to last an entire lifetime until you wake up, holy smokes.

Probably goes without saying but Ari Aster is a visual and thematic genius who uses grief to profound effect.

Yeah it was an interesting premise. I didn't find the execution to be that great, nor do I remember it being especially gory, but not bad for taking place in one setting. The same director is directing Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, so I hope that turns out a bit better.

I thought Ma was decent for what it was. Definitely not a lot of depth to it, but some fairly effective shock horror and weird humor. It reminded me of if Annie Wilkes was let loose on a bunch of teenagers.

Saw the Suspiria remake a little while ago - it does somewhat stand on its own, because of how different it is from the original, but at the same time it's not nearly as stylish or interesting. The original was great because it was bombastic and in-your-face right from the start, and got good mileage out of its 100-minute runtime. At almost an hour longer, the new one tried to be a bit of a slow burn, which does not fit the spirit of the original at all. It had some OK set pieces and side plots, and the dream sequences were cool, but really I just wanted to go back and watch Argento's version.

Looking ahead, Midsommar comes out in July, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark in August, and It 2 in September, so this is shaping up to be an extremely good year for horror.

Watched the original Carrie after realizing I had never seen it all the way through. Man what brilliant storytelling. If you knew nothing going in you might think it's a feel-good coming-of-age film about acceptance until the last 15 minutes, there's really not too much in the way of horror up till that point, aside from some stuff with the mom. The ending had more of an impact now that I actually saw how well it's sold that Carrie's life is finally going to improve, how she finally stands up to her mom and asserts herself. Genius tragic horror. And the last scene, holy smokes. I mean I had seen that part before but imagining it in a theater, people must've gone as nuts as they did at the Psycho twist.

Anyway that's my 40-years-late review, go catch Carrie in theaters, this Stephen King guy's the hot new name in horror.

I like the substance of You Were Never Really Here over its style. The story was good but I'm really not interested in constantly cutting to flashbacks, and between what's real and what's not. That Jacob's Ladder type of filmmaking doesn't do it for me.

The energy of the whole thing felt kind of low too, like I was watching a Yorgos Lanthimos movie with a little more going on.

It was interesting but I don't get the rave reviews for it.

The Pet Sematary remake managed to make Zelda look less-scary, although I suppose the original is hard to top. Some of the ways in which they used her for scares were good. Also having an older child turn evil makes the third act more believable than when they used a 2-year-old. Overall it's probably a little better than the original - more polished with some good additions, just a less scary Zelda, the original version of her still being the scariest thing of either movie imo.

Us is fantastic. Will be very hard to top this year. I like how it's basically a zombie movie, but you don't realize it until halfway through.

+ Imposter Syndrome

Really great visuals/cinematography. The twist is actually pretty cool and doesn't feel cheap. The whole 'underground people' thing is kinda goofy, I think some of their backstory would be better left unsaid, but the subtle foreshadowing of what's to come later, and of the twist, is excellent.

yeah I'm the same way, @Johnbobb

***SPOILERS***

I loved the visuals of some of the scares, like Toni Colette's one-armed character on the side of the bus, or the girl's phone screen locking on one of Dease's paintings. Also liked the previously-established physical art pieces attacking people. Any time they tried to actually animate one of the paintings, though, I thought it looked kinda silly and cartoonish.

The premise itself was good, and I wonder if the idea is at least partially-inspired by Henry Darger

It's blowing my mind that, in the hard cut at the beginning from day to night, there are naked cult people everywhere. I didn't notice that at all and it only became apparent when i saw a youtube comment pointing it out.

Autopsy of Jane Doe is frustrating because it's almost good, but employs too many clichs and doesn't commit to any particular set of rules/backstory. The setup is good though.

Down-air bay-bee.

I was thinking, I like her down-air in Melee more where you can throw it out as you're moving and still have control of the character/let gravity move you downward. Not the biggest fan of the recent trend of down-airs being these kicks that just automatically zip you downward for so many characters.

I'm kind of over bowl games, to be honest. I'd like to see a 16-team playoff, where every conference gets 1 team, + 6 at-large bids. Similar to the NCAA basketball tournament but still not overly inflated.

Even if you condensed it as much as possible this year, I think Notre Dame's schedule was good enough to give them a shot against Clemson after going undefeated, then have the winner play Bama.

Music City Bowl: Auburn -3.5
Camping World Bowl: West Virginia +1.5
Alamo Bowl: Washington State -3
Peach Bowl: Michigan -6
Belk Bowl: South Carolina -5
Arizona Bowl: Nevada +1.5
Cotton Bowl: Notre Dame +12.5

There's a chance the Purdue that beat Ohio St shows up, but I think Auburn's the better team. Big XII >>> ACC. Iowa St's dangerous but I'll tentatively take Wazzou. We've had Florida's number recently, though we could definitely fuck it up with several players leaving early and Harbaugh's recent trend of tanking to end a season. SEC >>> ACC. I feel like Nevada's pretty clearly better than Arkansas St, I don't get why Ark St's favored. Clemson should win but I'm not overly confident they'll blow Notre Dame out.

EDIT lol i didn't look at 5tarscream's picks but every one but the Cotton Bowl is the same
