The point is, shocking and/or satanic imagery is something that's been used to great success in the past. So you can't really hold that up as proof that they're not all about the money.

You only addressed half my post, then.

Their latest record contains two instrumentals (one Yes-inspired prog bit ending in some Nordic folk, one 80s action movie banger with Springsteen-esque saxophone solo) and a six minute sea shanty about the grim reaper. I just feel like everyone is always in a tremendous hurry to claim everyone is selling out based on... nothing tangible.

Prequelle reminds me of when Peter Gabriel put out "So." Everyone lost their goddamn minds about him selling out because he dared to write a couple catchy songs, despite half the album being his usual weird trippy shit.

Kiss
Slipknot
Marilyn Manson

I'm not getting your point. Is he supposed to actively avoid gaining fans or something? He's clearly still creating what he wants to create. "Selling out" to me is when you stop trying and just coast on whatever the suits tell you to make.

yeah. i wouldn't say ghost sold out. the gimmick was always there, anyway. plus if there's a story behind it, they're definitely doing it because they enjoy it. shit i wouldn't mind playing music in horror costumes myself.

Mhm. I'd feel differently if he just threw on skull paint and called it a day.

The amount of work and fun that goes into the lore and backstory of his own little world is really neat. We got months of teasing about the fate of Papa Emeritus III and who the next leader would be, the origins of the clergy, etc. Plus, it's all handled with a knowing wink about how dorky the whole thing is, like Papa Nihil's saxophone.

I mean, you don't have to like Ghost, but how anyone would see this and think "yeah, this is soulless, obviously this is mass-produced garbage to feed the masses," beats me. They're clearly having a fucking blast being what they wanna be.

their gimmick draws attention, you have to admit.

Absolutely, but drawing attention is not the same thing as selling out.

Thats like saying David Bowie sold out by dressing up as Aladdin Sane. The theater is a quintessential part of his act. Its still a niche that will always alienate plenty with the Satanic imagery.

Its not just costumes, its an ongoing story. Some dont care about that at all, but some (myself included) love geeking out about it.

@Flockaveli, yeah, their live show definitely adds an element. The theater and the lore around all the characters is campy fun, often hilarious and occasionally genuinely menacing, like an old horror movie in band form. Its a bit Spooky Ziggy Stardust.

Also, Im 99% sure TC was referring to GoldenEel as condescending, not you! At least I am

"Extreme music" is a catch-all term for metal and all its associated offshoots.

Okay, I guess in that sense theyre more accessible than most metal, sure.

Though that said Ive always thought of them as being closer to theatrical rock than metal anyway, and them being nominated in rock rather than metal kinda indicates that. Even their heaviest stuff is more metal by the 70s definition than the 2010s definition.

Every Judas Priest album before Painkiller would be not metal today.

Yeah, Prequelle is easily the best rock album this year. A throwback to when albums actually mattered, as each song is even better as part of the whole.

Who disrespect countless acts out there with the assertion that an album like Prequelle is unique among modern music

It IS pretty unique among successful music. I have no doubt a lot of artists are trying, but Ghost happens to be the act that is doing that while also managing to hit the big time. Theyve found that line theyre walking.

Someone admiring what Ghost is doing is not disrespecting countless acts, take a deep breath.

I mean its the same as Greta Van Fleet

You have all these people hyping them up as something unique, when theyre fine, but really just watering down a sound thats always been present in modern music enough that its palatable to the masses

Yes, its insulting and disrespectful to the countless acts out there that have ensured rock n roll was never dead, and to be implying that Ghost is bringing it back in some way is offensive

1) lol offensive. Seriously step outside for a second and take a few deep breaths
2) GVF and Ghost arent comparable. Ghost is a blend of throwbacky sounds across a couple decades in a modern packaging that is their own. GVF is Zepp b-sides

It was amazing live. Rats was the second song they played and it blew the house off. I have never seen a show with so much energy and nobody was moshing or acting a fool. Everybody was just so hype

I saw them three times this year, their shows are incredible.

Technically it was twice but I was at the Milwaukee show in May where, sadly, the man in the crowd passed away at intermission, massive heart attack. They did a makeup show on Halloween night with commemorative shirts with the fans likeness, front row seats for the family, and Forge addressed them with sincere emotion like four times. We all chanted the guys name. It was absolutely beautiful, they really made it a celebration of life. All proceeds went to them.

Additionally saw them in Peoria IL.

Eh same idea, Lets take Metal and a bunch of shit, throw it at the wall, and see what sticks.

I dont listen to Ghost, I remember checking them out and not liking them one bit.

Try listening to their new album. Its changed a bit

See, the thing is Ive heard they change with every album. Can you like, break down each one into the template of:

If you like x, y, and z, check out Ghost Album 1.

If you like a, b, and c, check out Ghost Album 2.

And so on. Otherwise Ill just be clicking through YouTube videos and listening to them for a minute before I get the itch to just click on something else (YT algorithms isnt the best way for me to discover and enjoy new music)

Easier to just do this:

Listen to
-Cirice
-Rats
-Absolution
-Faith
-Ritual
-He Is
-Dance Macabre
-Year Zero

You should get enough of a variety in there to determine which, if any, you like and from there I can recommend similar songs

Ghost is so much fun, the only people who dislike them are pretentious metal nerds who listen to bands with the same image as Ghost, only those bands are completely serious about it

This is by far my favorite review of Prequelle:

"The second those opening moments of "Rats" thundered across the speakers early this year, we knew Tobias Forge had crafted something special. That he did so while proudly pissing over all the tropes and cliches about what a metal album 'should' be only made Prequelle all the more enthralling.

"It's a ludicrous, overblown, ceaselessly brilliant modern classic. Congratulations to a band who only seem to be getting better and better."

Dont forget how, if you do choose to speak out, you will have to tell the embarrassing story of what the admiral did to you dozens of times in excruciating detail for everyone you know to hear, and you will be raked over the coals for every detail, where even if you dont make a single mistake in your retelling, you will STILL probably be called a liar and get death threats from the admirals buddies and admirers.
