I'm really curious whether a significant shift of the DNC's political center to the left would be a net loss or net gain

There's a lot of popular support for more "left" policy like Medicare for All, and the center-right orientation of the Democratic Party hadn't led to a lot of success electorally, which culminated in the 2016 election season. Definitely a net gain, but I have some misgivings with the Democratic Party generally also think we can stand to move further left as well.

That's a good way of looking at it. I was thinking too much in terms of: okay, so the police are going to join the protests, are they going to be regarded at the same level as the other workers, are they going to try to co-opt or undermine it? If there was a yellow vest movement in my area (NYC) and the police announced they would join, my instinct would be to boo and vote against letting them in and I wonder if that would be the reaction of other leftists organizing here.

But you're right in that one of the pillars maintaining the status quo will be disrupted if the police join the protests. That's super important.

I have very little regard for the police, a class of people who serve to exercise the state's monopoly on violence and generally act to protect the interests of the state. I don't see much revolutionary potential in the police as I do the military, for example. I think this is a good development though. What do you think are the longer-term implications of this @averagejoel?

The devs used an auto-saving feature for Fire Emblem 4. In that game you can save at the start of a turn and reload an unlimited amount of times without losing the save. Slot 1 would automatically update with a save from the start of the current turn.

To make Classic more appealing developers should add extra characters and chapters that get unlocked if your earlier characters die. All the GBA Fire Emblems had replacement cavaliers, etc. who were functionally similar to those you started out with, but Shadow Dragon took it a step further by having additional Gaiden chapters if too many people died. I think thats a great way to incentivize Classic playthroughs.

Well said @Hicks233, but I have to disagree with the very last line of what you wrote. The United States has undermined and is still undermining much of the world today, and with more recent developments like the $716 billion military budget being passed by overwhelmingly by both parties in the House and Senate speaking to its intent. We need to hold the U.S. accountable.

@synth_real, it's an excellent book. The way it surveys all these interventions makes it a great stepping stone for more intensive reading about any of the countries mentioned.

I think you're getting a little bit off track here.

I'm proceeding from the standpoint that public debates are more of a spectacle to make its audience feel vindicated in their beliefs than an informative exercise, and that "public intellectuals" have a material interest in making these public challenges and going into these debates with the particular set of tactics that have been described earlier in this topic.

Statistics have context. Given time to look into the context of the parenthood statistic you're touting might bring up an argument that says there was disproportionate enforcement of drug laws against the black community, laws that would remove black fathers from black households. (Here's an article about Nixon-era policy and perspectives that led to this: https://harpers.org/archive/2016/04/legalize-it-all/).

To be clear: that's as far as I'm going to go on that point, because this discussion isn't about a specific point made in a five minute long Ben Shapiro video

The main point, again, is that "gotchas" and rapid-fire statistics in a forum that isn't conducive to critical thought doesn't qualify as intellectual discussion.

I mean, none of what you wrote specifically contradicts what Balrog0's saying. Ben Shapiro doesn't address the historical antecedents substantially enough, he also cites some memorized statistics that are uncited and don't have sufficient time to be analyzed* for at least one calculated "gotcha" moment.

*time for fact-checking to formulate an informed response to a random statistic would detract from the spectacle of a public debate.

Also, you forward a 5 minute video in response to a long-form sourced article and chastise the other user for getting their body of knowledge from "hit pieces on blogs." You're inviting someone to ask how many 5 minute videos comprise your body of knowledge, and now we have a track running parallel to the main argument where folks are just trading insults.

The debates I mentioned involved sharp disagreements over ideology between the various groups/factions of the DSA that were involved, but above all they were cordial enough to foster a level of discussion that led to some people actually changing their mind and a vote being cast with very little hard feelings about it.
