I really wouldn't call it a deflection. I just found it funny that someone could claim they have any kind of privacy at all in this country. Unless you live 100% off the grid and use cash for all of your finances, there's someone out there that has your data.

https://www.brookings.edu/blog/up-front/2018/12/10/how-many-more-migrants-and-refugees-can-we-expect-out-of-venezuela/

Venezuelans who have fled the country already surpass the 3 million mark, with over one million in Colombia. Colombian authorities have stated that they expect the amount of Venezuelans in the country to double over the next 12 months. Venezuela appears to be tragically stuck in a perverse modern-day Malthusian trap, where lack of access to food is an important determinant of the emigration rate. The current conditions are so bad that even if the government were to put all of its net income from oilVenezuelas main and almost only export, which is publicly ownedto feed the poorest of the poor, there would still be a substantial portion of the population whose basic caloric needs wouldnt be covered.

The tool we developed, presented below, shows that, based on factors that determine Venezuelas foreign incomeoil production, price of oil, and inflows of other sources of foreign resources such as remittancesthe total number of Venezuelan migrants and refugees around the world could reach 8.2 million. Our calculation includes the 3 million Venezuelans already outside the country. If this happens, the Venezuelan tragedy would eventually surpass the Syrian refugee crisis, as we argued in an earlier post. Slight changes in the conditions defining the economic situation in the country can significantly affect the expected number of total migrants and refugees, as can be seen below.

The current situation in Venezuela is so critical that all available resources flowing into the country are simply not enough to import all the necessary food to complement the basic nutritional needs of those citizens living under the poverty line. We estimate that people whose minimum caloric needs cannot be met under these dynamics will eventually be forced to migrate.

Our tool shows that things can get worse rapidly. If oil production keeps collapsing, and reaches one mbpd, while everything else remains equal, we could expect the total number of migrants and refugees to reach over 10 million. Even if the price of oil recovers in 2019 to a level around $60 a barrel, which may be a high estimate based on the current quotes of oil futures, that still wouldnt be enough to prevent a significant increase in the scale of the Venezuelan migrant crisis.

Recently the U.N. announced an allocation of $9.2 million in emergency relief funds to Venezuela. To reverse the humanitarian catastrophe that compels people to migrate, our model shows, large scale aid is needed, probably billions worth. This assumes that whatever amount of foreign aid extended in an agreement with the Venezuelan governmentwhether $9 million or any other amountwill be used to help the people of Venezuela and not get lost in one of the many corruption schemes deployed by the government.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/in-sight/wp/2018/12/28/a-lonely-quest-for-survival-the-elderly-left-behind-in-venezuela

If life in Venezuela is tough, its even worse for the elderly.

The South American nation is plunging deeper into economic crisis fueled by corruption, failed socialist policies and lower oil prices, generating historic levels of hyperinflation that has left the old and infirm scrambling to find and pay for vital medicines. They face standing in hours-long lines to cash pension checks that dont adequately cover nutrition. Many have watched as their families have left this oil-rich country, leaving them to face lonely quests for survival.

Nationwide, the elderly are confronting major shortages of medicines that are indispensable for their age, even as their purchasing power has fallen around 90 percent in 2018.

The struggle is evident at the Mother of Calcutta Nursing Home in a southern Caracas suburb, where weak patients have rapidly deteriorated.

On a recent afternoon, a woman in her 80s clung tightly to a column in the kitchen, shouting insults hysterically. The medicines she takes to control her mood swings havent been available for a month. In recent weeks, two other patients with epilepsy had convulsions because the nursing home is no longer able to afford or find their pills.

A couple in their sixties opened the nursing home in 2001, using a model where residents help run the facility, which is now home to 77 elderly men and women. The security guard, for instance, is Tito Armando Matos, a 60-year-old who exchanges work for lodging and medical care. Were battling to stay alive, Matos said.

The Venezuelan government occasionally provides food baskets to the home. But its budget relies heavily on donations, which have been falling fast. At the same time, essentials from soap to diapers are priced ever higher in Venezuelas hyperinflationary economy, making these difficult times. Owner Baudilio Vega said hes considered closing many times, but the patients resilience pushes him to keep going, he said, and to keep a smile on my face no matter what.

he Indian government has authorized 10 central agencies to intercept, monitor, and decrypt data on any computer, sending a shock wave through citizens and privacy watchdogs.

Narendra Modis government late Thursday broadened the scope of Section 69 of the nations IT Act, 2000 to require a subscriber, service provider, or any person in charge of a computer to extend all facilities and technical assistance to the agencies. Failure to comply with the agencies could result in seven years of imprisonment and an unspecified fine.

Its not. The movie hasnt aged well at all. Anyone who says otherwise is either blinded by nostalgia or or are too afraid to admit the truth because they dont want to be scrutinized by the other people blinded by nostalgia.

I suspect that because it's a Kubrick film some people feel it's blasphemy to not worship it. When it really isn't all that sophisticated of a film. Maybe back when it came out the level of violence / nudity was extreme but meh.

People who argue that Marxism-Leninism was a "deviation from traditional Marxism" usually say that because they are Marxists who want to damage control for the catastrophic fundamental flaws within Marxism.

The only good thing that came out of actual Marxism was labor unions, which are good when they're done right. Everything else that Marx put out was nonsense.
