Especially how the story plates and text before each section gave you little hints about what was going to happen, without actually spoiling anything. The first part was basically a live-action Bugs Bunny cartoon, just unending visual gags and I was laughing the whole time. Tim Blake Nelson shines in this role, he was the perfect casting decision. The second part had Stephen Root, who is phenomenal. Literally as soon as I saw him onscreen I knew I was going to like this movie (after having already watched part one and seen him show up in part two). James Franco put on a decent performance, and this piece, while kinda short, was very enjoyable for what it was. Part three almost gave me whiplash with how dark it turned compared to the first two parts. I was not expecting it, and although I still enjoyed it a lot, I felt like it was one of the weakest sections of the anthology, if only because the plot was the easiest to pin down (it's just an allegory about the perils entertainment industry and the way Hollywood treats its artists). Part four... man oh man. This one was my favorite. I mean I loved the whole movie but if I'm being honest I could have watched an entire two hours of Tom Waits walking through the woods singing, and panning for gold. What an absolute treasure. Part five was great, although I felt it beat the viewer over the head a bit too many times with its theme. Still a great story to watch unfold, every character (even minor ones) were so richly developed. Part six was also bordering on being a bit too heavy-handed, although it showed a bit more restraint and ambiguity than part five. The characters, again, were all fantastic and the fact that the plot remains captivating despite almost the entire short taking place inside of a single set piece. It very nearly goes too far with it's winking fourth wall breaks at the end, but the banter between the passengers more than makes up for that. The low-income working class specifically will be less likely to have off work in either of those scenarios. The sets were very well done, the camerawork was excellent, and the art design and cinematography was above and beyond what you would normally expect for a Star Wars film (the prime example being the lightspeed shot). The acting was above par, especially on the parts of Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, and Adam Driver (honorable mention to the single scene Laura Dern has with Carrie Fisher - both actors did an adequate job throughout the rest of the film but this scene in particular was brilliantly performed by both). The writing was a mixed bag - pretty much the norm for Star Wars. Most of the dialogue was fair enough, with a few clunky lines here and there, which again is par for the course for a Star Wars movie. But the major writing weaknesses lie in the overall plot, in particular the decision to have the entire movie be a two and a half hour chase film. It created a lot of unnecessary pacing issues and resulted in a lot of the other writing decisions feeling very poorly executed - consider, for example, how the side plot of the secret mission to the casino could have felt if not handcuffed by the looming presence of the chase plot. Those decisions aside, the writing was pretty good. The script explores a lot of interesting themes, and brings some new character conceptualizationsninto focus. I agree with the assessment that Rian Johnson goes out of his way to subvert the normal and expected tropes is true, and I think that on the whole, this ends up working in the films favor. The score is John Williams, who is brilliant on his worst day. Not much to really say there. So, yeah. I think its pretty good. Not without its flaws, certainly.
