I feel like even if you didn't like either of them the comparison doesn't make much sense.

1. Palin was relatively unknown and a very bizarre VP choice
2. AOC was very unknown and beat a 10 year incumbent in her district
3. Palin was the Tea Party movement's It Girl
4. You could argue AOC is the same for progressives at this point
5. Both have paper-thin politics but their staunchest supporters think they're smart/can upset the system
6. The media won't shut the fuck up about both

Cause I think there's a difference but you presented the story as if there isn't.

Both are non-issues presented by the media as some of the more defining social ills of our time. I don't even like Disney but this personally affects no one. -WoW is in possibly its worst state ever. 8.1 didn't fix shit or bring back any players. Sub count is apparently super low to boot. It's obvious the developers don't care and possibly don't even play the game.
-Diablo 3 dead. Diablo Immortal controversy opened even the most loyal of fanboys' eyes to what Blizzard as a company is really about these days
-Overwatch focused on status quo and eSports over the actual game itself. Nine new Winter event skins, otherwise same exact shit as last year.
-SC2 has been dead for a while and its eSport scene has been bleeding dry for a few years.
-Hearthstone hasn't had a good expansion for a while and is losing players and money.
-HotS just got royally gutted:
-Talk of more mobile game bs.

It hasn't been great since Origins honestly. The identity politics is just the cherry on top of this dumpster fire.

Origins was all about gathering different groups and races and setting aside political differences to fight the darkspawn.

You can be political and celebrate diversity as an organic part of the storytelling (see Mass Effect 2, for example) or you can be political and celebrate diversity hamfistedly and so wide of the mark that you even end up having to apologize to the LGBQT community (see Mass Effect Andromeda and Dragon Age Inquisition). It all depends on your writers' talent, or lack thereof.

Adding on that, going about how "political" and "diverse" your work is before it's even out is a rather crass thing to do in my opinion.

If you want to convey a political message through your work by all means go ahead but when you're spoiling it before it's even out it feels like you're just trying to cash on it or using it as an excuse.

You know its a red flag when they feel the need to highlight that over say, gameplay or fun.
