This is what I think happened. I could hear the tremor in his voice as he was talking. The kid was flustered. He did blurt out "sir" a few times, but it did sound like towards the end he was realizing it and trying to apologize right after and correct himself.

I've worked in a nursing home. It's a very demanding job for very little pay.

The one I worked at is one of the newer, nicer "retirement communities with memory care wings". They are leaps and bounds better than older convalescent homes. I walked in the front door and thought I was at the wrong place. It reminded me of a ski lodge.

But once I started working I realized how understaffed we were. We had an average of about 50 residents requiring various levels of care. You know how many caregivers were on at one time? Four. And most of the larger immobile residents required at least two people for moving, showering, and changing.

The administrator told me when I was hired that it cost between two and ten thousand dollars A MONTH to live there, depending on the size of the room and the level of care. Know how much the caregivers got paid? $11.25 an hour. You could go down the street to In n' Out and earn more.
