When I say "technically suck", I mean that if you were to analyze them critically, you'd find that they're badly written.

For me, it's Dragon Ball (particularly, everything after the Namek saga). Weak storylines, poorly-handled characters, and an increasing lack of creativity as the series progressed...and yet, I still have a certain fondness for the franchise. Eh, probably just nostalgia, lol.

The only "objective rule" about something being overrated/underrated is that your opinion has to conflict with whatever the general consensus is. You can't call Scarface an underrated film when most people revere it, nor can you Trump intellectually overrated when most people think he's a dumbass.

For me, Sonic dominated my childhood in the early 90s, and then Crash took over in the late 90s ("Cortex Strikes Back" still being my favorite game of all time). Then I really got into Ratchet & Clank in the early 2000s, with my interest in that peaking with "A Crack in Time" (which, as far as I'm concerned, was the last worthy game in the series).

But I suppose Sonic has the most nostalgic value for me. Crash and Ratchet are not far behind.

The only time I hear it cited is at church, which is a room full of Christians. No need to bring up the bit about condemning non-Christians if it doesn't apply to anyone there.

Pastors have a habit of being concerned about the 'unsaved' who have committed to membership but wish to believe. Admittedly, they sometimes (for many, often, admittedly) use the verses about 'believing or else' as a scare-them-straight tactic into being saved. What's interesting is that this is even done in churches in which double predestination is taught (the belief that God chose his elect in his advance, and we have no ability to accept or reject his offer, even if it appears that we do).

it's hard to appeal to non-Christians by telling them they are already condemned for not believing. Might as well gloss over the bad parts to get them tithes.

Their perspective is that their job is to convey what they believe is God's word, and that their personal views of it should not apply. I have known pastors who were teary-eyed about the obligations they believed they had to inform people of their eternal damnation. In the case of believers who no longer believed, they referred to it as 'restoration'.

^And that right there is precisely why religion needs to die. People out here legit cryin because some creepy old baseless book told em innocent people were gonna burn the fuck up forever.

What if an opportunity arises where I could make even more money? I'm stuck with the bare minimum of a 6-figure salary. A year is no time these days; I'd rather just make 365k and then do whatever I want for more money.

there are very few opportunities in this world that let you triple your money without extreme risk

I mean, what if an opportunity comes by that would allow me to make more than 100k a year? If I choose option B, I have to ignore all of those opportunities for 10 years. At least with option A, my fixed income will be over in 12 months and I'll be free to do whatever I want again. Since you can't have any other source of income with either option, I'd rather just get it over with and make some really nice cash in the process.

Literally no place is every, or will ever be, a society of CRITICAL THINKERS. It's a nice hypothetical but it's literally completely useless.

And that is my point. THAT'S what needs to change. Again, promote critical thinking. Because until society stops being full of idiots, all we're doing is saying "hurr durr, be a good babysitter, Hollywood, or society won't know any better." That's putting a bandage on a shotgun wound. The problem--REAL problem--is that people just aren't very smart, and that will sooner be the death of society far before any stereotypical character in some cartoon show. Sorry, but in the end, it all comes back to critical thinking.

Are you being purposefully dense or do you really not understand that this is something that goes deeper than the conclusions you explicitly draw from a work of fiction?
Like, are you really going to pretend that how people, actions, conflicts etc are portrayed in various media reflects and shapes the way they're viewed and discussed in society? And are you going to pretend that every prejudice and preconceived notion is deliberately formed? Do you think that's what racism is? People suddenly, actively going "black people are worth less"?

Are you really missing my entire point that people should be nuanced enough in their thinking to know the difference between stereotypical portrayals and real-life people with their own backstories, upbringings, etc.? That proper education and critical thinking skills are the solution?

Never mind that there would be tons of places in the 90s whose practically only exposure to Indian culture would be Apu.

And IF WE WERE A SMART SOCIETY, that STILL wouldn't fuck up our perception of Indian people. Because we'd be smart enough to go "Hey, I recognize that this Indian character is a stereotype, but I also understand that Indians only make up like 6% of America and that this cartoon's representation of Indian folk shouldn't be taken at face value, if for no other reason than the fact that it's just a fucking cartoon. People should be judged individually, and whether or not I'm personally exposed to Indians is irrelevant."

Never mind that media helps shape our language, our frames of references, our norms, our collective sense of humor and sense of what's OK to joke about, etc. We affect that. And that affects us.

And if America was a society of CRITICAL THINKERS, media wouldn't have us by the fucking balls. That's my point. We need to be a smarter society, so that we can finally start properly contextualizing shit instead of worrying that stereotypes in a goddamn cartoon show will fuck up people's perceptions of the real thing.
