| DarthWendy 10/09/19 12:17:29 PM #7 | Probably as an attempt to coax the Turkish NATO ally, since Erdogan is constantly threatening to tighten his ties with Moscow and Tehran, and therefore solve the Syrian crysis exclusively with these two. Turkey already acquired the Russian S400 antimissile system, for a NATO member that's quite the "F U" move to NATO and the US. Not to mention his constant threat towards the EU to release all the refugees towards Europe. And yes, this coaxing is played at the expense of the greatest allies on the ground against ISIS, the Kurd militias, most notably the YPG, who bravely fought the Islamic State with Western support. Of course turning the backs on them is revolting. But the other face of the coin is that the YPG are, more or less indirectly, an emanation of the PKK who is mostly present in Iraq, and is considered by Turkey, and unfortunately, quite rightly so, as a terrorist organisation (even by the EU actually). So Erdogan is going to claim that it's his sovereign right to defend his border against the "terrorist" Kurds, by creating a 200km buffer zone inside Syria, despite the YPG not being terrorists at all and having never engaged the Turks, but having ties with the PKK. The US pulling off is just a more brutal return of realpolitik in the game and appeasing Erdogan at the expense of the Kurds. It sure is a dick move, but unfortunately the stakes have been deemed higher than loyalty to the West allies in Syria.
